Tribological characteristics of short fiber reinforced composites (단섬유 보강 복합재료의 트라이볼로지 특성)

  • Friction and wear characteristics of short fiber reinforced and particulate filled composites were investigated experimentally. Two kinds of fiber composites, chopped graphite fiber reinforced PAI(polyamide-imide) and glass fiber reinforced PAI, and a particulate composite, TiO$_{2}$ powder filled PAI, were selected for the friction and wear test since these are important engineering materials based on a new high temperature engineering plastic. All the specimens were cut into proper size for cylinder-on-plate type wear test. Frictional forces were measured by employing a load transducer and wear rates were calculated by measuring weight loss during wear test. The experimental results are reported in this paper and carefully discussed to explain the friction and wear behavior qualitatively. The frictional behavior is interpreted by considering four basic friction components which are believed to the genesis of friction and the wear behavior is explained by applying delamination theory of wear.

An Evaluational Investigation of the Physical Properties for the Commercially Available Cervical Braces (수종 시판 경추보조기의 물성에 관한 평가조사)

  • This is to investigate the physical properties of the commercially available Soft, Thomas, Minerva, and Philadelphia cervical braces which are widely used in orthopedics, neurosurgery, and rehabilitation medicine clinics as assisting devices for physical stabilization of cervical vertebrates, to use as a basic data for designing new type brace. Tensile strengths were observed by universal mechanical measuring device and Thomas brace required the highest stress to break by tensile stress. Durabilities against continuous frictional forces were also determined, and Minerva brace demonstrated the longest frictional time until being perforated. According to these results, poly ethlene is recommendable as a frame and preparation of pores in the material is favorable to provide ventilation to skin.

  • In this paper, a lens actuator for mobile devices is proposed using stack type piezoelectric materials. In general, the deformation of PZT actuators is not enough for lens motion when the allowed voltage is applied. The small stroke problem can be solved by accumulating a lot of small displacements in high frequency. In this paper, a new inch-worm type model for focusing actuator is suggested based on the interaction of inertial and frictional forces. Theoretical analysis and simulation using ANSYS are performed to verify the feasibility of the inch-worm PZT actuator model. Various types of clamps are considered to determine the effect of frictional force on the motion, and appropriate clamp-actuator models are proposed. The proposed models are experimentally verified and the experimental results show high correspondence with theoretical and simulated values. The inch-worm type focusing actuator enable a large stroke with 7.79 mm/sec with 10kHz and 10V.

Seismic Performance Evaluation of Vibration Attenuation Wireway-Pulley System Using the FE Analysis (유한요소해석을 통한 진동 감쇠형 와이어웨이시스템의 내진성능 검증)

  • A new lighting support structure composing of two-way wires and pulley, a pulley-type wireway system, was developed to improve the seismic performance of a ceiling type lighting equipment. This study verifies the seismic performance of the pulley-type wireway system using a numerical approach. A theoretical model fitted to the physical features of the newly-developed system was proposed, and it was utilized to compute a frictional coefficient between the wire and pulley sections under tension forces. The frictional coefficient was implemented to a finite element model representing the pulley-type wireway system. Using the numerical model, the seismic responses of the pulley-type wireway system were compared to those of the existing lighting support structure, a one-way wire system. The addition of the pulley component resulted in the increasement of energy absorption capacity as well as friction effect and showed in significant reduction in maximum displacement and oscillation after the peak responses. Thus, the newly-developed wireway system can minimize earthquake-induced vibration and damage on electric equipment.

Effect of passive self-ligating bracket placement on the posterior teeth on reduction of frictional force in sliding mechanics

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the static (SFF) and kinetic frictional forces (KFF) in sliding mechanics of hybrid bracket systems that involve placing a conventional bracket (CB) or active self-ligating bracket (ASLB) on the maxillary anterior teeth (MXAT) and a passive SLB (PSLB) on the maxillary posterior teeth (MXPT). Methods: The samples consisted of two thoroughbred types (group 1, anterior-CB + posterior-CB; group 2, anterior-ASLB + posterior-ASLB) and four hybrid types (group 3, anterior-CB + posterior-PSLB-type 1; group 4, anterior-CB + posterior-PSLB-type 2; group 5, anterior-ASLB + posterior-PSLB-type 1; group 6, anterior-ASLB + posterior-PSLB-type 2) (n = 13 per group). After maxillary dentition alignment and maxillary first premolars removal in the stereolithographically-made typodont system, a $0.019{\times}0.025$-inch stainless steel wire was drawn through the right quadrant of the maxillary arch at 0.5 mm/min for 5 min. The SFF and KFF were measured with a mechanical testing machine and statistical analyses were performed. Results: Four different categories of SFF and KFF were observed among all groups (all p < 0.001). Group 1 demonstrated the highest SFF and KFF; groups 4 and 3 were second and third highest, respectively. The fourth category included groups 2, 5, and 6. Placing PSLBs on the MXPT resulted in significant SFF and KFF reductions in cases with CBs on the MXAT, but not in cases with ASLBs on the MXAT. Conclusions: These data might aid in the development of a hybrid bracket system that enables low-friction sliding of an archwire through the MXPT.

  • The deformation and crack width of concrete walls of slabs, plates, panels and shells reinforced by a regular rectangular net of reinforcing bars and subjected to in-plane (membrane) internal forces is analyzed on the basis of a realistic model which takes into account the frictional-dilatant behavior of rough interlocked cracks, the effect of tension stiffening, and the dowel action of bars at crack crossings. Extensive numerical computer studies are carried out, and the reinforcement designs obtained from equilibrium conditions alone on the basis of either the classical frictionless approach or the recent frictional approach are compared in terms of the resulting crack widths. It is found that the use of frictional equilibrium design based on a low friction coefficient leads to a much smaller crack width than the classical frictionless design. The influences of bar diameter and crack spacing on the crack width are also studied. The model allows more realistic deformation analysis of reinforced concrete structures.

Analysis of Ship Groundings on Soft Sea Beds

  • The consequences associated with ships running aground depend very much on the soil characteristics of the sea bed and the geometrical shape of the ship bow. The penetration into the sea bed depends on these factors and the penetration is an important factor for the ship motion because it influences the ship heave and pitch motions as well as the friction between the ship and the soil. In this paper a rational calculation model is presented for the sea bed soil reaction forces on the ship bottom. The model is based on the assumption that the penetration of the ship bow generates a flow of pore water through the grain skeleton of the soil. The flow is governed by Darcy\`s law and it is driven by the pressure of the pore water at the bow. In addition to this pore water pressure, the bow is subjected to the effective stresses in the grain skeleton at the bow surface. These stresses are determined by the theory of frictional soils in rupture. Frictional stresses on the bow surface are assumed to be related to the normal pressure by a simple Coulomb relation. The total soil reaction as a function of velocity and penetration is found by integration of normal pressure and frictional stresses over the surface of the bow. The analysis procedure is implemented in a computer program for time domain rigid body analysis of ships running aground and it is verified in the paper through a comparison of calculated stopping lengths, effective coefficients of friction, and sea bed penetrations with corresponding experimental results obtained by model tests as well as large, scale tests.

Assessment of Adhesion and Frictional Properties of Polymer Binders for Secondary Cells using Colloidal Probe Atomic Force Microscope (Colloidal Probe 원자현미경을 이용한 2차전지 전극용 폴리머 바인더의 응착 및 마찰 특성 평가)

  • In lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), the stress induced by the volume change of an electrode during charge-discharge processes may often cause the mechanical integrity of the electrode to degrade. Polymer binders with enhanced mechanical properties are preferred for improved mechanical integrity and cycling stability of the electrode. In addition, given that sliding and shearing between the polymer binder and components in the electrode may readily occur, frictional and adhesion characteristics of the polymer binder may play a critical role in the mechanical integrity of the electrode. In this study, frictional and adhesion characteristics of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) were investigated using a colloidal probe atomic force microscope. Friction loops were obtained under various normal forces ranging from 0 to 159 nN in air and electrolyte and then the interfacial shear strengths of PAN and PVDF in air were calculated to be $1.4{\pm}0.5$ and $1.3{\pm}0.3MPa$, respectively. The results show that in electrolyte, interfacial shear strength of PAN decreased slightly ($1.2{\pm}0.2MPa$), whereas that of PVDF decreased drastically ($0.06{\pm}0.01MPa$). Decreases in mechanical properties and adhesion in electrolyte may be responsible for the decrease in interfacial shear strength in electrolyte. The findings from this study may be helpful in developing polymer binders to improve the mechanical integrity of electrodes in LIBs.

A comparative study of frictional forces according to orthodontic wires and ligation method under dry and wet conditions (교정선의 종류, 결찰방법, 타액의 유무에 따른 마찰력의 비교연구)

  • The Purpose of this study was fourfold - to evaluate the general laws of friction applied to orthodontic conditions, to compare archwire materials under these controlled conditions, to compare ligation method, and to measure the effect of the artificial saliva on friction with these materials Three wire alloys (Cobalt-chromium, Nickel-titanium, Beta-titanium) in two size wires (.016" , .016" ${\times}$.022" ) were examined respect to the bracket (.018" ${\times}$.025" standard), and two ligature material (stainless steel, elastomeric) in dry and wet conditions The results were as follows, 1. The order of frictional force against alloy materials was Co-Cr (lowest), Ni-Ti, and ${\beta}$-Ti(highest) - with the exception of elastomeric ligation under wet conditions. 2. S.S. ligation gave rise to significantly greater friction than elastomeric ligation did. 3. Testing in the presence of saliva, rather than in dry conditions, decreased the frictional force for S.S. ligation with .016" Co-Cr, Ni-Ti, ${\beta}$-Ti. but, increased the frictional force for S.S. ligation with .016" ${\times}$ .022" Co-Cr, Ni-Ti, ${\beta}$-Ti. 4. .016" ${\times}$.022 " wire generated more friction than .016" wire.

Dynamic Analysis of a Reciprocating Compression Mechanism Considering Hydrodynamic Forces

  • In this paper, a dynamic analysis of the reciprocating compression mechanism of a small refrigeration compressor is performed. In the problem formulation of the mechanism dynamics, the viscous frictional force between the piston and the cylinder wall is considered in order to determine the coupled dynamic behaviors of the piston and the crankshaft. Simultaneous solutions are obtained for the equations of motion of the reciprocating mechanism and the time-dependent Reynolds equations for the lubricating film between the piston and the cylinder wall and for the oil films on the journal bearings. The hydrodynamic forces of the journal bearings are calculated by using a finite bearing model along with the Gumbel boundary condition. A Newton-Raphson procedure is employed in solving the nonlinear equations for the piston and crankshaft. The developed computer program can be used to calculate the complete trajectories of the piston and the crankshaft as functions of the crank angle under compressor-running conditions. The results explored the effects of the radial clearance of the piston, oil viscosity, and mass and mass moment of inertia of the piston and connecting rod on the stability of the compression mechanism.
