  • An algorithm of Thermal-elastohydrodynamic lubrication analysis for the piston ring is developed. This algorithm contains cavitation boundary condition so it automatically satisfies conservation of mass. 1-D Reynolds equation and 2-D energy equation are solved simultaneously by using Gauss-Jordan method and Newton-Raphson method. Minimum film thickness and friction force are calculated for 1 cycle. There is little difference between the results caculated by isothermal rigid and EHL analysis in entire cycle. In the results of THL, shear heating effect and temperature boundary condition affect the minimum film thickness and friction force prediction. The minimum film thickness and the friction force calculated by THL are lower than those caculated using isothermal assumption.

  • Weight reduction for an automobile component has been sought to achieve fuel efficiency and energy conservation. In response to this trend, a new disc-brake called the circumferential friction disc-brake is suggested. This paper compares the mechanical performances of a conventional disc-brake and a suggested disc-brake, under the dynamic braking condition. The thermoelastic instability is considered to simulate the test condition. Furthermore, the metamodel using kriging interpolation method is introduced to obtain the optimum design of a suggested circumferential friction disc-brake. The design results obtained by the kriging method are compared with those obtained by the ANSYS.

  • In this paper, FFT(Fast Fourier Transform) analysis of friction was suggested as a method to interpret the contact conditions. Micro-grooves with various dimensions were fabricated on the silicon surface to investigate the frictional behavior with respect to the change in geometrical contact condition. Frictional forces between micro-grooved surfaces and spheres modeled as surface asperities were measured using a micro-tribotester which was built inside a SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope). The experimental results show that the relative dimensions and distributions of contact asperities between two surfaces can be predicted by the power spectrum and the main frequency in FFT-based analysis of friction coefficient. Also, it was shown that the friction coefficient for multi-asperities was the result of the superposition of that for each asperity.

  • The valve performance has been evaluated from the theoretical equation based on design information such as packing thrust, spring preload and friction coefficient(${\mu}$). The accuracy of those data can be lower than that of vendor's initial design data. Especially, the friction coefficient can be degraded with time than the original condition and the valve performance calculated using the previous friction coefficient can not be available. Accordingly, this paper is describing a new performance evaluation method of valve based on diagnostic test data which are acquired from a site valve tested in static and dynamic conditions. Especially, this paper provides a new method using friction coefficient(${\mu}$) which is derived from the diagnostic test data acquired in the valve's design basis condition.

  • The effect of characteristic of surface roughness and roughness patterns on friction and sliding wear was studied experimentally under reciprocating boundary lubricant sliding conditions. The test was conducted with specimens which have various arithmetic mean value and roughness pattern under the condition of different normal load. The experimental results show that the friction coefficient is decreased because of oxidation mass and valley effect as the normal loads increasing It was found that the specimens with surface roughness with a transverally oriented pattern have a smaller firction coefficient than the other two roughness patterns under the condition of the roughness values of Ra=0.5 and Ra=0.2 .

  • Wear volume was used generally to analyze the moving state of lubricated machine. But It is difficult of getting the correct wear volume because wear volume of it is progressed always unstably with a large amplitude on working condition. If correct analysis of wear volume on working condition for lubricated machine can be possible, it can be effect on diagnosis of failure condition. The purpose of this study is carried out to analysis friction factors affecting on wear volume for prediction of failure condition of alloy steel for machine structural use by design of experiment. The results show that the most important friction factors affecting on wear volume was applied load, neat sliding distance, sliding speed and materials.

  • Friction welding of titanium and aluminium is numerically modeled by the axisymmetric thermal elastic-plastic analysis. In titanium/aluminium friction welding, heat transfers into the titanium substrate to a distance of z=10(mm) on the side of the bondline and into the whole region of the aluminium substrate having the large thermal conductivity. Adjacent to the bondline, $^{\sigma}r\;and\;^{\sigma\theta}$ are tensile in the substrate whose thermal shrinkage is large, and are compressive in the substrate whose thermal shrinkage is small. $\sigma_z$ along the radial direction is large tensile at the periphery of the component. Plastic strain occurs only close to the bondline in the aluminium substrate. In the components of plastic strain, $\varepsilon^p_r\;and\;\varepsilon^p_{\theta}$ have positive values and $\varepsilon^p_r$ has large negative value. However, $\varepsilon^p_r$ is produced not because of the severity of the mechanical restraint condition, but on purpose to satisfy the condition of the volume constant. A plastic work is proposed as a measure to evaluate the mechanical severity. The plastic work is larger in the aluminium substrate than that in the titanium substrate. The mechanical condition is severer in the aluminium substrate.

  • Deformation of caisson occurred during the backfilling behind the caisson and some caisson moved toward seaside. A series of site investigation were conducted to figure out various circumstances at site and also used to analyze the cause of deformation. The soil condition of backfilling is also investigated because dredged material was used as a backfill material. The friction angle of backfill is supposed to be lower than the estimated one which was used in design stage. To determine the cause of friction shortage, back analysis for sliding safety were carried out with considering the soil condition of backfilling. A remedial plan, re-rising and relocating a caisson with backfilling good earth after treatment of caisson rubble mound to achieve the safety for sliding was proposed as a best solution based on the back analysis results. Reform concrete structure including service gallery and crane rail was also considered with the remedial work to improve the cape line of caisson.

  • The aim of this paper is to investigate the problem of strip down method, which is usually used to evaluate the engine friction level. The validity of strip down method was investigated by theoretical analysis of friction in crank and piston assembly. The friction of cylinder and piston assembly was analyzed under the various test conditions. The measured cylinder pressure was used as boundary conditions of friction torque and loss calculation. The friction loss of crank and piston assembly was influenced by test conditions that resulted from the variation of load condition. From the results, we have known that the strip down method could be possible to distort the friction loss of engine moving components.
