  • Disk brake system transforms a large amount of kinetic energy to thermal energy in a short time. As the size and speed of automotive increases in recent years, the disk brakes absorbs more thermal energy. And this thermal energy can cause an unacceptable braking performance due to the high transient temperature, that is attained at the friction surface of brake disk and pad. Although these high temperatures are one of the biggest problems. In this study, the overall thermal behavior of ventilated disk brake system was investigated by numerical method. The 3-Dimensional unsteady model was simulated by using a general purpose software package “FLUENT” to obtain the temperature distributions of disk and pad. The model includes the more realistic braking method, which repeats braking and release. The effects of several parameters such as the repeated braking, inlet air velocity and thermal conductivity on the temperature distribution were investigated.

  • Because of the importance of suction or injection in the fields of aerodynamics, space science and many other industrial applications, our present study is motivated. The effect of natural convection on MHD flow past a vertical plate with suction or injection is studied. We have tried to solve the dimensionless governing equations by using finite difference scheme. To ensure the validity of our numerical solutions, we have compared our numerical solutions for temperature and velocity for the case of suction and injection for unit Prandtl number with the available exact solutions in the literature. The corresponding codes were written in Mathematica 5.0 for calculating numerical solutions for temperature and velocity and the comparison between the exact and numerical solutions. For the purpose of discussing the results some numerical calculations are carried out for non-dimensional temperature T, velocity u, skin friction ${\tau}$ and the Nusselt number $N_u$, by making use of it, the rate of heat transfer is studied.

  • This paper describes the thermoelastic instability arising from friction heat generation in braking and proposes the finite element methods to predict the variation of temperature and thermal deformation. In a conventional disc brake analysis, heat generation is only related with wheel speed and friction material and the interface pressure between disc and pad is assumed constant. But under dynamic braking conditions, the frictional heat causes the thermoelastic distortion that leads to more concentrated contact pressure distribution and hence more and more non-uniform temperature. In this paper, to complete the solution of the thermomechanically coupled problem, the linear relation model between pressure and temperature is proposed and demonstrated in examples of a simple two dimensional contact problem. And the two dimensional model has been extended to an annular three dimensional disc model in order to consider more realistic geometry and to provide a more accurate critical speed for automotive brake systems.

  • It is very important to improve the durability and reliability of crankshaft because of conflicting demands for lower fuel consumption and higher power output. In this study, for the crankshaft bearing design, analyses were conducted to determine the lubrication characteristics such as oil flow rate, minimum oil film thickness, friction force and increase of oil temperature at main bearing and connecting rod bearing. Additionally, supplied oil pressure and temperature effects on the bearings were simulated to figure out lubrication characteristics on the bearings. Finally the effects of increasing the bearing width and clearance were introduced on the lubrication characteristics.

  • Water-lubricated frictional characteristics of a stainless steel ball bearings are not well known compared to the oil-lubricated frictional characteristics. Furthermore a study on friction at a high temperature is rare because the bearing maintenance strategy for water-lubricated or chemicals-lubricated bearings of equipment is generally based on the replacement of the failed bearings-and parts. Ball bearings and ball screw are installed in the power transmission for the newly developing integral reactor and these are lubricated with chemically-controlled pure water at a high temperature and a high pressure. Bearings and power transmitting mechanical elements for an atomic reactor requires high reliability and high performance during the estimated lifetime, and it should be verified. In this paper, experimental research results of the frictional characteristics for water-lubricated ball bearings are presented as a preliminary investigation.

  • Single flighted screw injection technology is the most cost effective method for the production of film, sheet, pipe and the fundamental step in other processes including blow molding and injection molding. The temperature of polymer melts and injection pressure play a very important role in the injection molding machine. Thermal distortion and displacement of a screw by temperature difference and injection pressure difference ratio cause a friction and thermoelastic wear by metal-to-metal contact between the screw and the cylinder. In this paper we analyzed thermal distortions of a screw as functions of temperature distribution and pressure profiles by finite element analysis.

  • There are many research results as individual uni-axial tension creep test of heat-resisting materials. However, there are very few about the study on the high temperature creep test for the Initial Strain Method, and especially any study on it about the friction welded joints of SUH3 to SUH35. One of the important concerns is a reliable method of evaluating static creep properties. No reliable method seems available at present to evaluate or predict static creep properties. So, the reliable method to evaluate and predict them by the ISM and AE techniques was made.

  • Water-lubrication ball bearings are required to install in aqueous medium where water is used as coolant or working fluid. However water-lubricated frictional characteristics of stainless steel ball bearing is not will known compared to oil-lubricated frictional characteristics. Furthermore study on friction at high temperature is rare because bearing maintenance strategy for water-lubricated or chemicals-lubricated bearings of equipment is mostly based on change of failed bearings and parts. • This is the study on dry sliding wear behavior of unidirectional carbon fiber reinforced epoxy matrix composite at ambient temperature. The wear rates and friction coefficients against the stainless steel counterpart specularly processed were experimentally determined and the resulting wear mechanisms were microscopically observed. Three principal sliding directions relative to the dominant fiber orientation in the composite were selected. Wren sliding took place against smooth and hard counterpart, the highest wear resistance and the lowest friction coefficient were observed in the antiparallel direction. When the velocity between the composite and the counterpart went up, the wear rate increased. The fiber destruction and cracking caused fiber bending on the contact surface, which was discovered to be dominant wear mechanism.

  • At present, FSW(friction stir welding) process is being considered as an actual way for production of various industrial products. However FSW process involves high temperature and load on the tool during welding. These are make a difference between FSW machine and general machine tools. From this reason, development of FSW machine needs very careful consideration on stiffness of machine structure, spindle and moving axis including machine control system. In this study authors investigate on the trends of technology development of FSW machine in order to share the information for more extension of FSW technology with related researchers and engineers.
