To investigate which fresh-water fishes were infected with Clonorchis sinensis metacercariae, 13 species of the fishes in the Kum River, the Mangyong River, the Tongjin River, and the Sumjin River were surveyed from July to October 2001. The metacercariae of C. sinensis were found in Squalidus japonicus coreanus in the Kum River and the Mangyong River, Pseudorasbora parva in the Kum River, and Pungtungia herz i in the Sumjin River. The average number of the metacecariae in 1 gram of fish body weight was 12 in Squalidus japonicus coreanus, 26 in Pseudorasbora parva in the Kum River, 4 in Squalidus japonicus coreanus in the Mangyong River, and 7 in Pungtungia herz i in the Sumjin River. The C. sinensis egg-positive rates among the residents at the Sumjin River basin in 1999 and 2000 were 8.9% and 6.8%, respectively. In conclusion, C. sinensis infection was endemic in the above riverside areas.
The susceptibility of marine medaka, Oryzias dancena to fish pathogenic viruses (infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV), viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus (VHSV), hirame rhabdovirus (HIRRV), infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHNV), and lymphocystis disease virus (LCDV)) was investigated. The cumulative mortalities of fish immersed with IPNV (experimental condition: $15^{\circ}C$ sea water (SW)), VHSV ($15^{\circ}C$ SW), HIRRV ($15^{\circ}C$ fresh water (FW)) were 30%, 40% and 60%, respectively. In the fish immersed with IPNV ($15^{\circ}C$ FW, $18^{\circ}C$ FW and SW), VHSV ($15^{\circ}C$ FW, $18^{\circ}C$ FW and SW), HIRRV ($15^{\circ}C$ SW), IHNV ($15^{\circ}C$ FW and SW), LCDV ($15^{\circ}C$ FW and SW, $18^{\circ}C$ FW and SW), and mock-challenged group, mortality rate was less than 10%. IPNV, VHSV and HIRRV were re-isolated from the dead fish. These results suggest that marine medaka is susceptible to IPNV, VHSV and HIRRV, although their susceptibility depends on the environmental conditions.
Storage characteristics of fresh and thawed sliced raw fish (flounder and rockfish) washed in different solutions (tap water, A; jade water, B; 0.2% chitosan-ascorbate (CA), C; 0.03 ppm ozone water, D; 1.5% vinegar containing jade water, E; 1.5% vinegar and 0.2% CA containing jade water, F) at $10^{\circ}C$ were investigated. Changes in pH and acidity of thawed sliced raw fish (TS) during storage were lower than for fresh sliced raw fish (DS). The total microbial content (log cfu/g) of A stored for 3 days in DS was 6.7 (which represented an increase of 1 log cycle compared with day zero), but was 5.50 in B, 3.23 in C, 4.90 in D, 2.40 in E and 1.77 in F, the latter similar to counts at day zero. The degree of microbial contamination of DS and TS followed the order F > E > D > C > B > A in flounder, and F > E > C > D > B > A in rockfish. In general the hardness and chewiness of TS was less than for DS. While the effect of CA on TS texture was not significant in flounder, the effect showed in rockfish. For DS, the appearance in B, C and D was relatively good, as was freshness. Fishiness of flavor was in the order A > B > F > E > D > C. Overall acceptability of flounder and rockfish treated with C was better than treatment with the other washing agents. For TS the appearance of flounder and rockfish were good in B and C. The freshness of flounder and rockfish were in the order of D > C > B > A > E > F and D > C > B > A > E > F, respectively. Fishiness of the flavor of sliced raw fish was lowest in D, which also provided the best overall acceptability.
Mullet is an important marine aquaculture fish species in Korea, with a total of 7,237 tons produced as of 2022, making it the 5th most produced marine aquaculture fish species. In this study, ectoparasites presumed to be isopods were discovered in the fins of farmed flathead grey mullet (average weight 550 g), and the characteristics of the parasites were confirmed. The length of the parasite was 5 to 18 mm, and 3 to 7 parasites were infected per fish. To analyze the characteristics of the parasites, molecular biological identification and phylogenetic analysis were performed using the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene, and it was confirmed to be most closely related to Nerocila japonica in the Cymothoidae family. To confirm the parasite control effect, a direct exposure drug sensitivity test was conducted on five types of aquatic drugs and fresh water, trichlorfon was confirmed to be effective.

Physiological responses and tolerance limit of hybrid striped bass $(Morone\;Chrysops\;male{\times}\;M.\;saxatilis\;female),$ were investigated on salinity changes from 33 psu to 0 psu and from 0 to psu 33 psu in two separate trials, respectively. In the acute salinity decrease from sea water (33 psu) to fresh water (0 psu), plasma level of cortisol, glucose, total protein, aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) were not affected, however, $Na^+,\;Cl^-$ and osmolality significantly decreased. In the acute salinity increase from fresh water to sea water (33 psu), plasma cortisol level did not change. Glucose and total protein concentrations in plasma and hematocrit (Hct) decreased, whereas AST, ALT, $Na^+,\;Cl^-$ and osmolality increased. The hybrid striped bass can overcome the acute changes of salinity, from 0 psu to 33 psu or from 33 psu to 0 psu, But salinity decrease stressed the fish much more than salinity increase.
A large-scale survey was conducted to investigate the infection status of fresh water fishes with Clonorchis sinensis metacercariae (CsMc) in 3 wide regions, which were tentatively divided by latitudinal levels of the Korean peninsula. A total of 4,071 freshwater fishes were collected from 3 regions, i.e., northern (Gangwon-do: 1,543 fish), middle (Chungcheongbuk-do and Gyeongsangbuk-do: 1,167 fish), and southern areas (Jeollanam-do, Ulsan-si, and Gyeongsangnamdo: 1,361 fish). Each fish was examined by the artificial digestion method from 2003 to 2010. In northern areas, only 11 (0.7%) fish of 2 species, Pungtungia herzi and Squalidus japonicus coreanus from Hantan-gang, Cheolwon-gun, Gangwon-do were infected with av. 2.6 CsMc. In middle areas, 149 (12.8%) fish were infected with av. 164 CsMc. In southern areas, 538 (39.5%) fish were infected with av. 159 CsMc. In the analysis of endemicity in 3 regions with an index fish, P. herzi, 9 (6.2%) of 146 P. herzi from northern areas were infected with av. 2.8 CsMc. In middle areas, 34 (31.8%) of 107 P. herzi were infected with av. 215 CsMc, and in southern areas, 158 (92.9%) of 170 P. herzi were infected with av. 409 CsMc. From these results, it has been confirmed that the infection status of fish with CsMc is obviously different among the 3 latitudinal regions of the Korean peninsula with higher prevalence and burden in southern regions.
In order to effectively utilize marine processing by-product such as fish scale, chemical compositions for the scale were analyzed. The selected fishes were gray mullet, Mugil cephalus, living in the sea and carp, Cyprinus carpio in the fresh water, having a lot of scales among the fishes living in seawater and fresh water. And we also investigated the difference in the chemical compositions between gray mullet and carp, depending on both living circumstances. The major components of the scales were found to be crude ash and crude protein which were each about 49% for gray mullet and which were about 20% and 79% for carp, respectively, on the basis of dried scales. The proteins extracted from both scales proved to be collagen through amino acid compositions and SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoretic patterm. Also this scale collagen was assumed to by Type I collagen because the migration rate of $\alpha$1 and $\alpha$2 subunit of the collagen were almost the same those as calf skin Type I collagen. Most of proteins from gray mullet was collagen, however, the collagen content in proteins from carp was estimated to be only about 53%, on the basis of the ratio of hydroxyproline to protein. The crude ashes of both scales identified to be hydroxyapatite through element compositions and X-ray diffraction analysis. In conclusion, both fishes in different living circumstances were almost similar to in the chemical compositions but chemical contents for crude ash and crude protein.

Four-day bioassay method was used in this study to find out toxicity levels of DDT and PCP. From this study it was found that M. chrysophekadion was the most sensitive to DDT with a 96 h-TL sub(m) value of 0.0044 mg/l followed by P. Sutchi with a 96 h-TL sub(m) value of 0.0056 mg/l, and the most resistant was C. Siamensis with a 96 h-TL sub(m) value of 0.0133 mg/l. In the case of PCP, it was also found that M. Chrysophekadion and P. Sutchi were the first and second most sensitive to PCP with a 96 h-TL sub(m) value of 0.065mg/l PCP and 0.125mg/l PCP respectively, as in the case of DDT study. T. Nilotica was found to be the most resistant to PCP with a 96 h-TL sub(m) value of 0.264mg/l PCP. The resistant power of fish to pollution varies with the species of fish and the types of pollutants. In order of decreasing sensitivity of fish to DDT based on TL sub(m), the following sequence is obtained M. Chrysophekadion, P. Sutchi, T Nilotica, P. Gonionotus, K. Bicirrhis, L. Bicolor, C. Carpio, R. Heteromorpha, C. Siamensis while in the case of PCP, M. Chrysophekadion, P. sutchi, L. Bicolor, K. Bicirrhis, P. Gonionotus (R. Heteromorpha, R. Trilineata), C. Siamensis, C. Carpio, T. Nilotica.
Dietary guidelines are a distillation of dietary advice from health professionals to the general public. They are based upon current scientific knowledge about the relationships between diet and disease, nutrients available in the food supply of a country, and the profile of morbidity and mortality in that country. With two different sets of dietary guidelines used for more than an decade in Korea. the necessity of revising dietary guidelines has been raised continuously from academia and research. Funded by a grant from the Health Technology Planing and Evaluation Board. Dietary guidelines for each age group were drafted as a research project and the one for the Korean elderly is as follows: Dietary Guidelines for the korean elderly(draft) - Have a variety of easily digestible foods on time; at least 3 meals a day and some snakes. - Be physically active to maintain appetite and/or ideal body weight. ; maintain a balance between activity and what you eat. -Increase consumption of bean-and dairy-and dairy-products. - Consume enough amounts of fresh dark-green and yellow vegetables and fresh fruits. - Consume adequate amounts of assorted kind of animal foods including fish, meat and poultry. - If you drink alcoholic beverages, limit your intake and, drink enough water and other averages; alcohol may interact with your medication and affect your appetite. Aforementioned draft and related contents are expected to be utilized as a neat base in formulating(or revising) dietary guidelines for Korean by the Government in near future.
The study was performed to investigate changes in hematological responses and antioxidative enzyme activities (superoxide dismutase, SOD; catalase, CAT) of Japanese eel Anguilla japonica following exposure to 0 (control), 2.33, 4.60, 6,64 and 8.78 mM nitrite-N in fresh water for 48 h. Hematological parameters such as plasma nitrite, electrolytes, cortisol, glucose, glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (GOT), glutamate pyruvate transaminase (GPT), hemoglobin (Hb), methemoglobin (metHb) and NADH-methemoglobin reductase (NMR) were measured. Plasma nitrite, cortisol, metHb and NMR increased directly with increasing ambient nitrite concentration, while Hb content showed a progressive decline. Levels of plasma potassium, GOT and GPT of the eel exposed to 6.64 mM ambient nitrite were significantly higher than the control fish. The activity of SOD and CAT in plasma, gill and liver of the eel following exposure to nitrite were augmented by increasing ambient nitrite. Levels of plasma nitrite, metHb, NMR, cortisol, glucose and antioxidative enzyme activities of the eel exposed to 2.33 mM ambient nitrite were significantly higher than the control fish. This study suggested that the eel acutely exposed to elevated ambient nitrite causes nitrite-induced stress responses, changes in antioxidative enzyme activities and hematological parameters.
