  • This research deals with the properties of fresh and hardened high-performance concrete(HPC) incorporating high-reactivity metakaolin(HRM). The properties of fresh and hardened state concrete were investigated included air content, slump flow, setting time, heat of hydration, compressive strength, resistance to chloride-ion penetration, abrasion and repeated freezing and thawing. The properties of the HRM concrete were also compared with those of the portland cement concrete and silica fume(SF) concrete. The laboratory test results indicate that HRM material can be used as a supplementary cementitious material to produce high-performance concrete.

  • GGBFS(Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag) is one of the most actively used mineral admixtures with excellent long-aged strength and chloride diffusion resistance. Unlike Standard covering GGBFS in Japan and the U.K., the domestic standard for GGBFS does not contain low fineness of GGBFS under 4000 grade. In this paper, several basic tests are carried out for the concrete with 3,000 grade GGBFS concrete and ternary blended concrete for reducing hydration heat by mixing 4,000 grade GGBFS and fly ash, such as fresh concrete properties, compressive strength, and shrinkage properties. The air content and slump between the ternary blended concrete and the concrete with low-fineness GGBFS showed the similar level, and the results of difference in setting time from them were less than 20 minutes, showing no significant difference. In the evaluation of compressive strength and shrinkage characteristics, the ternary blended concrete showed lower long-aged strength and higher shrinkage than the low-fineness GGBFS concrete.

  • The six grades weathering system is normally used in weathered rock classification. In this study. fresh and weathered rock block of grade I to V were sampled in Jang-soo ana but samples of the grade VI was omitted from this study. The variation quantities of chemical weathering indices with weathering degree are smaller than those of physical and mechanical properties. Increase of Weathering degree is well indicated by physical and mechanical properties such as strength, hardness, ultrasonic velocity and slake durability result. Especially, absorption and porosity ratio is a good indicator. As weathering proceeds. a number of the cracks affect the rock deformation. Therefore, stress-strain curves of weathered rocks in unconfined state are quite different from ones of fresh rocks.

  • Portland cement concrete exposed to high temperatures during mixing, transporting, casting, finishing, and curing can develop undesirable characteristics. Applicable requirements for such the hot weather concrete differ from country to country and government agencies. The current study is an attempt at evaluating the hardened properties of the concrete exposed to hot weather in fresh state. First of all, this study reviews the current state of understanding and practice for hot weather concrete placement in US and then roadway sites with suspected hot weather concrete problems were investigated. Core samples were obtained from the field locations and were analyzed by standard resonance frequency analysis and the boil test. Based on the results, there does not appear to be systematic evidence of frequent cracking problems related to high temperature placement. Thus, the suspicious deteriorations which are referable to hot weather concreting would be due to other factors.

  • This study is aimed for investigating the influence of mortar on improved of surface shape of crushed sand, and analyzing the physical properties of fresh state and hardened state. By the test results, it was found that the flow value and bleeding ratio was increased, but the change of flow value according to time was decreased with the improved surface shape of crushed sand. Also, comparing improved of surface shape of crushed sand with not improved of surface shape of crushed sand on strength, compressive strength is about the same and flexural strength decrease in case of improved of surface shape of crushed sand.

  • As a part of efforts for conformity of demand to high quality of concrete and for solution of economic problem, blast-furnace slag has been utilized by means of cement replacement. With utilization of blast-furnace slag, superior performance can be ensured, environmental pollution can be prevented and economical advantage can be obtained. But blast-furnace slag has a lot of disadvantages like retardation of strength manifestation etc. in field construction, so properties examination of concrete using blast-furnace slag instead of cement is necessary. For upper necessity, it is planed that basic data for utilization and performance management of blast-furnace slag by means of cement replacement is presented with experimental comparison and investigation of engineering properties of concrete according to the replacement ratio and fineness of blast-furnace slag.

  • Recently, consumers have gained an interest in natural and minimally processed foods, inciting the food industry to consider using of natural products as preservatives. Strawberries are a widely consumed fruit but are also highly perishable. Therefore, in this study, the physicochemical properties of strawberries (Fragaria×ananassa) were evaluated after a 12-h treatment with lemon essential oil (Citrus×limon) or cinnamon essential oil (Cinnamomum cassia) vapor during storage at 22℃ for 4 days in an accelerated shelf-life study and 4℃ for 18 days in a validation study. Weight loss was blunted in fruit treated with oil vapor during the first days of storage (p<0.05). Lemon essential oil delayed fruit darkening (p<0.05) but reduced the firmness of strawberries (p<0.05). Strawberries treated with cinnamon essential oil had a higher concentration of reducing sugars (p<0.05), and a decrease of 16.7% visible decay, although the difference was insignificant. Oil vapor treatment did not alter the pH, organic acid content, or soluble solid content during storage compared to the control. Since lemon and cinnamon essential oils have well-documented antimicrobial properties, they may be suitable for the natural preservation of fruit. This study provides new information on using essential oil vapor treatment to preserve fruits, and potentially decrease fruit loss and waste.

  • Polyethylene-terephthalate (PET) from bottle waste and linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) from barrels and tanks waste are widely available and need to be recycled. Recycling them in concrete and mortar is an alternative solution for their disposal. In this study various quantities of sand (5%, 10%, 15% and 20%) were substituted by powder from LLDPE waste. In addition, PET waste fibers (corrugated, straight) were added to the mortar with different percentages (0.5%, 1%, 1.5% and 2%) of cement mass. This paper evaluate the mechanical and physical properties of the composites in fresh (workability, air content and density) and hardened state (compressive and flexural strength, water absorption and total shrinkage). From the experimental results, it can be concluded that the strengthening in tensile of the mortar with plastic waste corrugated fibers is improved. Other important results are that the water absorption and the density rate are less than that of the ordinary mortar.

  • Concrete undergoes significant phase changes from liquid to solid states as hydration progresses. These phase changes are known as the setting process. A liquid state concrete is electrically conductive because of the presence of water and ions. However, since the conductive elements in the liquid state of concrete are consumed to produce non-conductive hydration products, the electrical conductivity of hydrating concrete decreases during the setting process. Therefore, the electrical properties of hydrating concrete can be used to monitor the setting process of concrete. In this study, a parameter identification method to estimate electrical parameters such as ohmic resistance of concrete is proposed. The effectiveness of the proposed method for monitoring the setting process of concrete is experimentally validated.

  • High flowing concrete has flowability, passability, segregation resistance and so on, and there are so many influence factor to affect to fluidity of high flowing concrete, therefore it is so difficult to evaluate exactly the properties in fresh state. This study is to analyze and evaluate thefluidity of high flowing concrete affected by fine aggregate with test method such as, slump-flow test, V-lot test, L-flow test, Box filling test.
