  • In this paper, a novel frequency reconfigurable active array antenna(RAA) system, which can be reconfigurable for three reconfigurable frequency bands, is proposed by using commercial RF MEMS switches. The MEMS switch shows excellent insertion loss, linearity, as well as isolation. So, the system performance degradation of the reconfigurable system by using MEMS switches can be minimized. The proposed frequency reconfigurable active antenna system is consisted with the noble frequency reconfigurable front-end amplifiers(RFA) with the simple reconfigurable impedance matching circuits(RMC), reconfigurable antenna elements(RAE), as well as a reconfiguration control board(RCB) for MEMS switch control. The proposed RAA system can be reconfigurable for three frequency bands, 850 MHz, 1.9 GHz, and 3.4 GHz, with $2{\times}2$ array of the RAE having broadband printed dipole antenna topology. The validity of the proposed RFA as well as RAA is also presented with the experimental results of the fabricated systems.

  • In this paper, a frequency reconfigurable slot antenna which has a bandwidth-enhanced characteristic is proposed. The proposed antenna consists of two parts; the wide slot and the narrow slot, to increase the bandwidth of the antenna and have the frequency reconfigurable characteristic. The wide slot has triangular shape and makes the bandwidth increased, and the narrow slot can mount PIN diodes. By changing on/off state of PIN diodes, the total length of the slot is changed. From this characteristic, the proposed antenna can finally control the center frequency and minimize variation of the impedance matching.

  • In this paper, the flexible and reconfigurable frequency selective surface for C-band was designed using patch array and grid structure for radome and other curved surface applications. Frequency reconfigurability was obtained by varying the capacitance of varactor diode and flexibility is implemented by using flexible PCB. For the validity of the proposed structure, we fabricated the flexible and reconfigurable frequency selective structure and measured the frequency reconfigurability for different bias voltages and different curvature surfaces from the optimized design parameters. From the measurement results, we know that the proposed structure has the wideband reconfigurable frequency bandwidth of 6.05-7.08GHz. We can apply this proposed structure to the curved surface like as radome of aircraft or warship.

  • This letter proposes a reconfigurable directional coupler that uses a variable impedance mismatch reflector to achieve high isolation characteristics in the antenna front end. The reconfigurable coupler consists of a directional coupler and a single-pole four-throw (SP4T) switch with different load impedances as a variable load mismatch reflector. Selection of the load impedance by the reflector allows cancellation of the reflected signal due to antenna load mismatch and the leakage from the input to isolation port of the directional coupler, resulting in high isolation characteristics. The performance of the proposed architecture in separating the received (Rx) signal from the transmitted (Tx) signal in the antenna front end was verified by implementing and testing the reconfigurable coupler at 917 MHz for UHF radio-frequency identification (RFID) applications. The proposed reconfigurable directional coupler showed an improvement in the isolation characteristics of more than 20 dB at the operation frequency band.

  • A reconfigurable multi-band mixer for the SDR system is proposed. The proposed reconfigurable mixer is operated between $850\;MHz{\sim}2\;GHz$, which includes all commercial mobile communication service. Because the varactor diodes are used to select a specific frequency and to adjust the impedance characteristic of the selected frequency band, the proposed reconfigurable mixer can be achieved to similar performance across all of the tuning range. In addition, the designed reconfigurable mixer is applicable for the SDR system since it has a single signal path for the multi-band signals and wide band tuning range.

  • In this study, we design a reconfigurable frequency selective surface (FSS) using fluidic channels to use the FSS in multi-frequencies. Effective permittivity can be changed using water as the fluid of fluidic channels in a dielectric slab, and the frequency characteristics of FSS can be controlled. We optimize the dimensions of the fluidic channel to design a reconfigurable FSS and measure its transmission characteristics.

  • In this paper, we presented the paper-based reconfigurable frequency selective surface(FSS) for transmitting or blocking the wireless LAN signal in indoor environments. The proposed reconfigurable FSS are designed on coated paper using a printing of conductive ink and conductive adhesive for PIN diode, which provides ON/OFF of the reconfigurable FSS for passing or blocking the 5GHz signal. The reconfigurable FSS attached on the wall can pass or block the incident wireless signal as the received signal strength in indoor. To provide the validity of the proposed FSS, we fabricated the reconfigurable FSS on the paper and confirmed the very similar results between simulations and measurements. From the measured results of the proposed spectrum control system, we know that the proposed reconfigurable FSS can block about 20dB at 5.745GHz~5.805GHz.

  • This letter presents a reconfigurable ground-slotted patch antenna using a PIN diode connection in slots to achieve dual-frequency operation. Slots in the ground plane increase the electrical length and thereby reduce antenna size by 53%. By controlling PIN diode conduction, we achieved band hopping while still satisfying the bandwidth requirements for K-PCS and WiBro bands.

  • In this paper, a co-planar waveguide(CPW) fed zeroth-order resonant(ZOR) antenna with frequency reconfigurable radiating structures is fabricated and measured. The unit cell of proposed antenna consists of a series metal-insulator-metal(MIM) capacitor and two shunt line inductors which are shorted through the via. The proposed antenna is designed based on a composite right/left-handed(CRLH) transmission line with two unit cells and it has open ended structure in order to radiate electromagnetic energy mainly on the shunt arm. In order to reduce the antenna size and to exhibit a frequency reconfigurable ability using diode switches four straight strips bent by 90 degrees are used as shunt inductors. The total size of fabricated antenna is $0.22{\lambda}_0{\times}0.16{\lambda}_0$ at zeroth-order resonant(ZOR) frequency. The measured maximum gain and bandwidth (VSWR ${\leq}2$) are 3.1 dBi and 56MHz at ZOR frequency of 2.97 GHz, respectively. This type of antenna can be applied to a frequency reconfigurable antenna system with triple bands.

  • This paper presents the design of reconfigurable frequency selective surfaces for X-band bandpass operation with improved isolation. The proposed reconfigurable FSS is composed of a four-legged loaded element, a inductive stub and a bias grid. The PIN diode is located between the four-legged loaded element and the stub, which can control the frequency response of reconfigurable FSS by ON/OFF state. By adjusting the length of the stub, the desired bandpass frequency and the improved isolation between ON and OFF state can be obtained. For validation of simulated results, we have carried out transmission characteristic measurements using rectangular waveguide of WR-90. The measured results are in good agreements with the simulated results.
