Air void systems in hardened concrete has an important influence on concrete durability such as freeze-thaw resistance, water permeability, surface scaling resistance, and etc. Linear traverse method and point count method described at ASTM have been widely used to estimate the air void system in hardened concrete. These methods, however, are rarely used at present, because they require many efforts, are time consuming works, depend on each person's decision, and are not repeatable. Thus, new image analysis method using microscope and computer processes has been approached for analyzing air void system in hardened concrete. However, it is just in initial step. The purposes of this study were to develope an effective and reliable image analysis technique for estimating air void system in hardened concrete. The developed technique was proved to be accurate, reasonable and repeatable.

Pavement concrete subjected to severe environmental condition may be vulnerable to frost attack practically where de-icing chemicals are used. This study focused on the investigation of durability characteristics of pavement concrete incorporation polypropylene fibers and application feasibility of these into the pavements of local roads and highway. A series of labortory tests were performed with main experimental variable such as fiber types, fiber contents. and type of concrete mix. The test of compressive strength was executed as primary tests, before the durability tests such as a scaling resistance were performed. De-icing salt resistance test was progressed by recycling freeze and thaw in the presence of a 4% calcium chloride solution. The deteriorated surfaces were rated by visual inspection and the loss weight were measured at every 5 cycles.

The purpose of this study is to examine the resistance of water-permeable concretes to freezing and thawing action. The water-permeable concretes with cement-aggregate ratio of 1:5.5(by weight) and two kinds of admixture content [SP : superplasticizer(0, 1.0%), HPAE : high performance air entraining agent(0.5, 1%)] used OPC(ordinary portland cement) as binder were prepared, and then tested for relative dynamic modulus of elasiticity, mass change, length change and durablity factor. It's been concluded from the test results that the superior relative dynamic modulus of elasiticity and durability factor of water-permeable concretes were obtained at superplaciticizer 1.0% after 300 cycles. The water-permeable concretes used superplasiticizer 1.0% having relative durability factor of 88% after 300 cycles.

During recent years, the durability of concrete structures has been considered in concret practice and material research. To preserve the brittleness of concrete as well as energy absorption and impact resistance, amount of fiber usage has greatly increased in the field of public works. Ultra fine powder, silica fume, mixed into concrete, it reduce void of concrete structure. Especially, there's a great effect for strength improvement of concrete by initial pozzolanic reactions. For these reasons, if silica fume mixed into concrete, it decrease the total void by microfilter effect . Pozzolan reaction, between cement particle and silica powder, can elaborate the micro structure of matrix. And so, in this paper, we deal SFRC for the purpose of efficiently using of industrial by-products(silica fume). Also we performed the test for durability such as freeze-thaw resistance and accelerated carbonation of SFRC using silica fume.
Coating performance of various coating systems including chlorinated rubber and epoxy/urethane used most for steel structures of highway in Korea, was evaluated by exposing test specimen to complex deterioration factors such as ultraviolet ray, moisture, freeze-thaw cycle and salt. Deteriorated specimens were evaluated by chalking and rust grades according to ASTM, and measurement of color differences and adhesion. In overall coating performances such as corrosion resistance, photochemical stability, and adhesion, ceramic/ urethane, moisture-curable urethane/ urethane, etc. were superior. As for other coating materials tested in this study, superior materials against certain deterioration factors may be inferior against other factors. Accordingly, in order to select suitable maintenance coating materials for the use, it is thought that investigation of suitability through experiment should precede selection of materials, especially for unusual coatings or paints.

Air void systems in hardened concrete has an important influence on concrete durability such as freeze-thaw resistance, water permeability, surface scaling resistance. Linear traverse method and point count method described at ASTM is the routine analysis of the air void system that have been widely used to estimate the spacing factor in hardened concrete. Recently, many concretes often have a spacing factor higher than the generally accepted $200-250{\mu}m$ limit for the usual range of air contents. This study is proposed to estimate the matrix spacing factor by calculation of simplicity. The matrix spacing factor needs two parameters that are air content and numbers of air voids in the hardened concrete. Those are obtained from the standard air-void system analysis of the ASTM C 457. The equation is valid for all values of paste-to-air ratio because the estimation of paste content is unnecessary at the using ASTM C 457. The matrix spacing factor yields a similar estimate of the standard spacing factor.

In this study, a structural concrete square beam was developed using the centrifugal molding technique. In order to secure the bending stiffness of the cross section, the hollow rate of the cross section was set to 10% or less. Instead of using the current poor mixture of concrete and a concrete mixing ratio with a high slump (150-200) and a design strength of 100 MPa or more was developed and applied. In order to investigate the durability of centrifugally formed PSC square beams to be used as the superstructure of the avalanch tunnel or ramen bridge, the durability performance of ultra-high-strength centrifugally formed concrete with a compressive strength of 100 MPa was evaluated in terms of deterioration and chemical resistance properties.Concrete durability tests, including chloride penetration resistance, accelerated carbonation, sulfate erosion resistance, freeze-thaw resistance, and scaling resistance, were performed on centrifugally formed square beam test specimens produced in 2022 and 2023. Considering the information verified in this study, the durability of centrifugally molded concrete, which has increased watertightness in the later manufacturing stage, was found to be superior to that of general concrete.
Milk protein-gum conjugates were prepared by Maillard reaction and added to dough to investigate the possibile use of them as anti-staling agents in bread Four different types of conjugates were added to dough, i.e., $casein-\kappa-carrageenan$ (CK), casein-sodium alginate (CA), $whey-\kappa-carrgeenan$(WK) and whey-sodium alginate (WA). Their addition to flour increased the gelatinization temperature, water absorption and development time of the dough. Extensogram showed the increased resistance to extension of the doughs resulting from the addition of the conjugates. Moisture content of the breads decreased during storage at $5^{\circ}C$ for 4 days. The breads added with conjugates had lower extents of the decreases than non-treated degrees and maintained higher moisture content than non-treated bread after 3 freeze-thaw cycles. The storage degrees at $5^{\circ}C$ for 4 days affected the increased bread hardness, but, addition of WA conjugate decreased extents of the increases. Therefore, milk protein-gum conjugates, especially WA conjugate, contributed to retarding staling of breads

Leakage due to deterioration and damage is one of the major causes of volume change by freezing and thawing, and it leads micro-cracking and surface scaling in concrete structures. The deterioration of damaged concrete accelerates with the chloride attack. Thus, in the detailed guidelines for facility performance evaluation (2020), the quality of cover concrete and the freeze-thaw (FT) repetition cycle were newly suggested for concrete durability assessment. The quality of cover concrete should be evaluated by the rebound hammer test and the FT repetition cycle should be also considered in the deterioration environmental assessment. This study suggested the application of fast dynamic based nonlinear ultrasound method to monitor initial micro-scale damage under freezing and thawing environment. Concrete specimens were fabricated with different water-cement ratios (40%, 60%) and air contents (1.5% and 3.0%). The compressive strength, rebound number, relative dynamic modulus, and nonlinear ultrasound were measured with different FT cycles. The scanning electron microscopy was also performed to investigate the micro-scale FT damage. As a result, both the rebound number and the relative dynamic modulus had difficulty to detect early damage but the proposed method showed a potential to detect initial micro-scale damage and predict the FT resistance performance of concrete.
PURPOSES : The objective of this study is to evaluate the environmental resistance of bio-polymer concrete for use of pavement materials developed for reducing the carbon-dioxide. METHODS : The compression, tension, and bending strength tests were conducted on the bio-polymer concrete specimens with and without environmental conditioning. The specimens were conditioned using the freezing-thaw and accelerated weathering process for long period of time. To assess the resistance against chloride, the chloride ion penetration resistance tests were carried out on the bio-polymer concrete specimens. RESULTS : Test results show that the maximum difference in strength between specimens with and without conditioning is about 2.6MPa indicating that the effect of environmental conditioning on specimen strength is negligible. Based on the chloride ion penetration resistance test, the penetration quantity of electric charge of the specimens is zero and there is no ion penetration within the bio-polymer concrete. CONCLUSIONS : It is found from this study that there is slight change in strength of bio-polymer concretes before and after environmental conditioning process and no chloride ion penetration observed in these specimens. Therefore, the developed bio-polymer concretes can be applied effectively as pavement materials due to the small change of physical properties with environment change.
