  • The effect of distribution shape of porosity using a quasi-3D theory for free vibration analysis of FG microbeams is studied analytically in the present paper. The microbeams are simply-supported and nonhomogeneous, with power function variation of Young's modulus along their thickness. The modified coupled stress theory is utilized to consolidate size dependency of microbeam. Both even and uneven distribution shape of porosity are considered and the effective properties of porous FG microbeams are defined by theoretical formula with an additional term of porosity. The equation of motion is obtained through Hamilton's principle, however, Navier type solution method is used to obtain frequencies. The influences played by many parameters are also investigated.

  • This paper deals with free vibrations of the tapered beams with the constant surface area. The surface area of the objective beams are always held constant regardless shape functions of the cross-sectional depth. The shape functions are chosen as the linear and parabolic ones. Ordinary differential equations governing free vibrations of such beams are derived and solved numerically for determining the natural frequencies. In the numerical examples, hinged-hinged, hinged-clamped and clamped-clamped end constraints are considered. As the numerical results, the relationships between non-dimensional frequency parameters and various beam parameters such as section ratio, surface area ratio, end constraint and taper type are reported in tables and figures. Especially, section ratios of the strongest beam are calculated, under which the maximum frequencies are achieved.

  • This paper deals with free vibrations of the tapered circular arches with constant volume, whose cross sectional shape is the solid regular polygon. Volumes of the objective arches are always held constant regardless shape functions of the cross-sectional depth. The shape functions are chosen as the linear, parabolic and sinusoidal ones. Ordinary differential equations governing free vibrations of such arches are derived and solved numerically for determining the natural frequencies. In the numerical examples, hinged-hinged, hinged-clamped and clamped-clamped end constraints are considered. As the numerical results, the relationships between non-dimensional frequency parameters and various arch parameters such as rise ratio, section ratio, side number, volume ratio and taper type are reported in tables and figures.

  • FCP requires different curvatures and shapes according to the method of division, and it is necessary to manufacture a formwork accordingly. FCP production equipment consists of CNC equipment and side shape control equipment. This can be implemented in various shapes of upper, lower, and side surfaces. In the side shape control equipment, it is implemented as a variable side formwork. Among the required performance of the variable side formwork, there is stiffness against side pressure, which needs to be verified. Therefore, in this study, the FCP fabrication experiment is conducted with the developed variable side formwork. By analyzing the error in the shape of the fabricated FCP, the lateral pressure resistance capability of the side form is measured and verified.

  • Shape-preserving property is the important method that controls the complex free form curve/surface. Interpolation method for the existed Shape-Preservation had problems that it has needed the minimization of a curvature-related functions for calculating single-valued data. Solving this problem, in this paper, it proposed to the algorithm of generalizing C piecewise parametric cubic that has shape-preserving property for both Single-value data and Multivalue data. When there are the arbitrary tangents and two data, including shape-preserving property, this proposed method gets piecewise parametric cubic polynomial by checking the relation between the shape-preserving property and then calculates efficiently the control points using that. Also, it controls the initial shape using curvature distribution on curve segments.

  • The discrete-layer model is proposed to analyze the edge-effect problem of laminates under extension and flexure. Based on three-dimensional elasticity theory, the displacement fields of each layer in a laminate have been treated discretely in terms of three displacement components across the thickness. The displacement fields at bottom and top surfaces within a layer are approximated by two-dimensional shape functions. Then two surfaces are connected by one-dimensional high order shape functions. Thus the p-convergent refinement on approximated one- and two-dimensional shape functions can be implemented independently of each other. The quality of present model is mostly determined by polynomial degrees of shape functions for given displacement fields. For nodal modes with physical meaning, the linear Lagrangian polynomials are considered. Additional modes without physical meaning, which are created by increasing nodeless degrees of shape functions, are derived from integrals of Legendre polynomials which have an orthogonality property. Also, it is assumed that mapping functions are linear in the light of shape of laminated plates. The results obtained by this proposed model are compared with those available in literatures. Especially, three-dimensional out-of-plane stresses in the interior and near the free edges are evaluated and convergence performance of the present model is established with the stress results.

  • In the present study, a numerical analysis of transient mixer flow is performed considering free surface formation. The flow patterns and free surface shape in a mixers formed by flat paddle and pitched paddle impellers are predicted. In a flat paddle mixer, two flow circulation regions are formed due to strong radial flow, whereas one large circulation is formed in a pitched paddle mixer due to axial downward flow. These differences affect the free surface evolution and shape. It is seen from the results that a flat paddle mixer gives deeper free surface at center region than a pitched paddle mixer. The free surface of 8-blades-flat-paddle mixer is also simulated to compare with the available experimental and simulation results. The present computational results agree reasonably well with the experimental data.

  • A general curve and surface is a basic method to generate Free-form object using the fundamental properties of blending function. In typical method, there is an overhead of calculating to present Free-form object with the line segments and interpolation algorithm, In this paper, for resolving this problem efficiently, it will propose the flexible Free-form curves/surfaces using Ball curve shape-preserving property. This method includes Geometric Continuity that is needed to design Free-form Surface of high degree consisted with many curves. Also, when lots of data are reduced using Geometric Property of Free-form curves, the shape-preserving property of resulting object can be maintained, then it can represent any Free-form object with less calculating .

  • It is important to model the mechanical structure precisely and reasonably in predicting the dynamic characteristics, controlling the vibration, and designing the structural dynamics. In the finite element modeling, the errors can be contained from the physical parameters, the approximation of the boundary conditions, and the element modeling, From the dynamic test. more precise dynamic characteristics can be obtained. Model updating using parameter modification is appropriate when the design parameter is used to analyze the input parameter like finite element method. Finite element analysis for free-free-free-free(FFFF) and clamped-free-free-free(CFFF) plate with uniform area and shape change are carried out as model updating examples, Mass and stiffness matrices are updated by comparing test and analytical modal frequencies. The result shows that the updated frequencies become closer to the test frequencies.

  • We are concerned with a free boundary problem for the 2D Stokes channel flows, which determines the profile of the wing for the channel, so that the given traction force is to be distributed along the wing of the channel. Using the domain embedding technique, the free boundary problem is transferred into the shape optimization problem through the compliant formulation by releasing the traction condition along the variable boundary. The justification of the formulation will be discussed.
