  • This paper presents flow characteristics of a sweeping jet issued by a feedback-free fluidic oscillator. Overall flow characteristics of feedback-free sweeping jet (FFSJ) were analyzed using flow visualization. The feedback-free sweeping jet has a sinusoidal external flow pattern. The oscillating frequency of the FFSJ is three times higher than that of a conventional sweeping jet at the same Reynolds number. Flow structure and turbulence characteristics were investigated using time-resolved particle image velocimetry (TR-PIV). In instantaneous velocity fields, the flow did not stay at ends but changed the direction continuously in contrast to the conventional sweeping jet. Velocity distributions at each plane which were extracted from mean velocity field has Gaussian distribution, which is similar with a circular jet. The sweep angles were constant as 45° at all Reynolds numbers in the high flow rate regime.

  • The interaction between the hypersonic free stream and the side jet flow at high altitudes is investigated by direct simulation Monte Carlo(DSMC) method. Since there is a great difference in density between the free stream and the side jet flow, the weighting factor technique which could control the number of simulation particles, is applied to calculate these two flows simultaneously. Chemical reactions are not considered in the calculation. For validation, the corner flow passing between a pair of plates that are perpendicularly attached is solved. The side jet flow is then injected into this comer flow and solution is found for the merged flow. Results are compared with the experiments. For a more realistic rocket model, the flow past a blunted cone cylinder shape is solved. The leeward or windward jet injection is merged with this flow. The effect on the rocket surface is observed at various flow angles. The lambda effect and the wake structure are found like low attitudes. High interaction between the free stream and the side jet flow is observed when the side jet is injected in the windward direction.

  • Numerical analysis of two dimensional incompressible laminar free jet flow was carried out by using finite difference SMAC scheme. Flow characteristics of free jet flow such as jet width, similarity of jet velocity and hypothetical origin were investigated for different Reynolds numbers of Re=30 and 100. The reliability of predictions were confirmed by comparison with exact solution. Non-dimensional velocity distribution showed similarity of jet flow velocity after initial region. In the region of laminar flow, the location of hypothetical origin becomes more distant with Reynolds number.

  • A numerical study for a two dimensional multi-jet with crossflow of the spent fluid has been carried out. Three different distributions of mass-flow rate at 5 jet exits were assumed to see their effects upon the flow characteristics, especially in the jet-flow region. For each distribution, various Reynolds numbers ranging from laminar to turbulent flows were considered. Calculations drew the following items as conclusion. 1) The development of the free jets issued from downstream jets was hindered by the crossflow formed due to jets. Consequently, the free jet was developed into the channel flow without any evident symptom of impingement jet flow characteristics 2) The crossflow induced the pressure gradient along the cross section of jet exits and the value of the pressure gradient increased as going downstream. The crossflow generated also the turbulent kinetic energy as it collied with the downstream jets. 3) The skin friction coefficient along the impingement plate was affected more by the distribution of mass flow rate at jet exits rather than by the Reynolds number. The skin friction coefficient was inversely proportional to the square root of the Reynolds number, regardless of flow regime when a fully developed flow was formed in the jet flow region. 4) The distribution of the skin friction coefficient along the impingement plate was found to be controlled by adjusting the distribution of mass flow rate at jet exits.

  • The interaction between hypersonic free stream and side jet flow at high altitudes is investigated by using the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method. In order to alleviate the difficulty associated with the large density difference between the free stream and the side jet flow and to simulate the two flows simultaneously, a weighting factor technique is applied. For validation, the corner flow over a pair of plates perpendicularly attached is calculated with and without a side jet, and the results are compared with experiment. For a more realistic configuration, the flow past a blunted cone cylinder shape is solved. The leeward or windward jet is injected into the free stream and the effect on the aerodynamic force and moment is observed at various flow angles. The lambda shock effect and the wake structure are studied in terms of the surface pressure differential. A higher interaction between the free stream and the side jet flow is observed when the side jet is injected in the windward direction.

  • In the present study, the flow behaviors of square jets surface discharged and submerged discharged into shallow water were each simulated using computational fluid dynamics, and the results were compared. As for the verification of the models, the results of the hydraulic experiment conducted by Sankar, et al. (2009) were used. According to the results of the verification, the present application of computational fluid dynamics to the flow analysis of square jets discharged into shallow water was valid. As for the wall jet, which is one form of submerged discharges, at the bottom wall boundary, the peak velocity of the jet rapidly moved from the center of the jet to the bottom wall boundary due to the restriction of jet entrainment and the no-slip condition of the bottom wall boundary, and, as for the surface discharge, because jet entrainment is limited on the free water surface, the peak velocity of the jet moved from the center of the jet to the free water surface. This is because jet entrainment is restricted at the bottom wall boundary and the surface so that the momentum of the central core of the jet is preserved for considerable time at the bottom wall boundary and the surface. In addition, due to the effect of the bottom wall boundary and the free water surface, the jet discharged into shallow water had a smaller velocity diminution rate near the discharge outlet than did the free jet; at a location where it was so distant from the discharge outlet that the vertical profile of the velocity was nearly equal (b/x =20~30), moreover, it had a far smaller velocity diminution rate than did the free jet due to the effect of the finite depth.

  • The characteristics of laminar free jet flow with having applied AC electric fields have been investigated experimentally. A single electrode configuration was adopted such that electric fields were applied directly to nozzle and thus the surrounding could be an infinite ground. The experimental results showed that the jet flow with AC was modified significantly. At a certain axial distance, the laminar fuel stem was broken down and subsequently it was separated into three parts when AC electric fields were applied over a certain voltage in a range of frequencies less than 120 Hz. The breakdown point was measured by varying applied AC voltage and frequency. The effect of applying electric fields to jet flow was discussed in detail.

  • An experimental study of compressible jet flows has been undertaken in a small transonic wind tunnel. The aim of this investigation was to realize a jet simulator in the framework of wing/nacelle integration research and to characterize the jet flow behavior. First, free jet configuration, and subsequently jet flow in co-flowing air stream configuration were analyzed. Flow conditions were those encountered in a typical flight condition of a generic transport aircraft, i.e. fully expanded sonic jet flows interacting with a compressible external flowfield. Conventional experimental techniques were used to investigate the jet flows-Schlieren visualization and two-component Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV). The mean and fluctuating properties were measured along the jet centerline and in the symmetric plane at various downstream locations. The results of two configurations show remarkable differences in the mean and fluctuating components and agree well with the trend observed by other investigators. Moreover, these experiments enrich the database for such flow conditions and verify the feasibility of its application in future aerodynamic research of wing/nacelle interactions.

  • Flow characteristics of a round jet with swirl number of 0.17 have been investigated using a hot -wire anemometry in the initial region within 10D(exit diameter). Swirl effects were observed by comparing centerline flow characteristics, similarities and turbulent budgets of a swirl jet and a free jet, respectively. To obtain similarity of the radial profiles mean velocity and higher moments were measured at the vertical pl anes, located at 2.5, 5.0, 7.5D, 10D, respectively. The centerline velocity characteristics were also measured. It is turned out that similarities of mean and Reynolds stress are established. The jet boundary has wider width than that of a free jet and the shear stress also becomes stronger. In addition the centerline decay becomes faster than that of the free jet, indicating that the swirl induces more entrainment in the initial region of the swirl Jet by transferring the axial mean kinetic energy into the swirl energy and, therefore, has wider boundary, compared with that of free jet.
