  • Boknae Bio-park is a free water surface constructed wetlands to remove non-point source pollution. Boknae Bio-park constructed wetlands (CWs) consist of forebay, wetlands ($1^{st}$, $2^{nd}$, and $3^{rd}$ wetlands), and micropool. The concentrations of BOD, SS, T-N and T-P in inflow were 1.87-4.23, 5.2-24.0, 4.94-15.59 and $0.10-0.75mg\;L^{-1}$ in Boknae Bio-park CWs from April to December in 2008, respectively. The removal rates of BOD, SS, T-N and T-P in Boknae Bio-park CWs were 26, 43, 62 and 83%, respectively. The removal rates of BOD and SS in the spring and summer were higher than those in other seasons. The removal rates of T-N and T-P on spring were slightly higher than those in other seasons. The amounts of pollutants removal in Boknae Bio-park CWs were higher in the order of forebay > wetlands > micropool for BOD, wetlands > forebay > micropool for SS and wetlands > forebay > micropool for T-N. The amount of T-P removal was not significant different in all areas.

  • The quality and storage characteristics of low salted onion and five cereals-doenjang (DFO) were investigated. At the DFO, soybean koji ($57{\sim}62%$), onion (3%) and salt (8%) were mixed with equal amount of rice, barley, glutinous millet and glutinous indian millet ($10{\sim}30%$), and water ($7{\sim}12%$). The storage of DFO was done by vacuum packing in polypropylene tube, and sterilized at $121^{\circ}C$. The fermentation and storage was conducted for 60 days at $25^{\circ}C$ at each condition. Control doenjang (GD) was the salinity of 16% soybean doenjang that was not sterilized and packed in plastic containers for storage. During the fermentation, pH of DFO was lower than GD. The pH maintained stability during the storage, and revealed to be lowered, as the proportion of mixed cereals was higher. During the fermentation of DFO, the brix degree revealed to be higher than GD and maintained s1ability during the storage. During the fermentation and storage, the amino nitrogen content of DFO was ranged $400{\sim}470mg%$ by showing higher content than GD and maintained stable content during the storage. During the fermentation, the activities of protease and ${\beta}$-amylase were maintained to be high at DFO, but the activities during the storage were high at GD. The color $L^*$ value of DFO during fermentation and storage maintained higher values than GD, but $a^*$ value revealed lower pattern. Total free amino acids of DFO was ranged $1,918{\sim}2,290mg%$ which was higher than GD that recorded 1,291 mg%. When the sensory evaluation was conducted for DFO that was fermented and stored for 60 days, the DFO mixed with $20{\sim}30%$ of cereals resulted to have more savory taste, flavor, and sweeter than GD, and overall acceptability for color and overall taste was high.

  • The aim of this study is to provide the basic data for yacon [Samallanthus sonchifolius (Poepp. & Endl.) H. Robinson] in dietary food. The nutritional compositons, such as protein, ash, carbohydrate, dietary fiber, vitamin and fructooligosaccharide, were analyzed for 4 yacon germplasm lines. Yacon has low calories with only 46~56 kcal/100 g. The contents of water, fat, ash, protein, carbohydrate and dietary fiber were ranged 85.9~86.8%, 0.1~0.2%, 0.2~0.3%, 0.5~0.7%, 12.2~13.1% and 1.05~1.14%, respectively. The iodine-starch test did not show any color or precipitation reaction, which indicates that yacon has no starch content. However, in the absence of starch, yacon is rich in fluctooligosaccharide, which is between 9.6~11.1%. Maltose is present in the larger amount, followed by sucrose, glucose, and fructose in terms of free sugars. The analysis of minerals revealed that yacon contains potassium in the larger amount of 141~176 mg/100 g F.W., followed by magnesium at 8.2~10.6 mg, calcium, and sodium representing the least present mineral. Yacon proved to have a total of 17 types of amino acids, which are between 404.0~581.8 mg per 100 g of yacon. Glutamic acid, the main sweetening component, is present in the large amount of 94.0~182.2 mg/100 g F.W., followed by aspartic acid, arginine, and alanine. The proportion of the essential amino acid was 24.8~33.6%. Results of analysis also showed that yacon contains 0.001~0.024 mg, 0.03~0.11 mg, 0.02~0.3 mg, 0.3~0.4 mg and 14.1~20.6 mg of ${\beta}$-carotene, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, and ascorbic acid, respectively. It is also likely to be highly used as functional food material in the future because it is abundant in both fluctooligosaccharide and antioxidants which are important functional components.

  • The current study examined the effects of radish leaves powder on the excretion of fecal triglyceride, and sterol and hepatic UDP-glucuronyl transferase (UDPGT) activity in rats fed hypercholesterolemic diet. Male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 100$\pm$10 g were randomly assigned to normal control group (N group), normal diet with 5% radish leaves powder supplemented group (NR) and hypercholesterolemic groups, which were sub-divided into radish leaves powder free diet group (HC) and 2.5% (HRL), 5% (HRM), and 10% (HRH) radish leaves powder supplemented groups. The experimental diets were fed ad libitum for 4 weeks. Fecal weights and water contents were significantly increased in all radish leaves powder supplemented groups (NR, HRL, HRM, and HRH) than that of N and HC groups. Fecal total lipid contents including fecal neutral and acidic sterols in radish leaves powder supplemented groups were higher than those of the HC group, and especially that of HRH group was the highest among all experimental groups. Hepatic UDPGT activity of HRH group was 38% higher than that of HC group. Excretions of fecal bile acid were increased 2.3 and 2.7 folds in HRM and HRH groups compared with that of HC group. And neutral sterol, coprostanol, and coprostanone contents of them were higher in radish leaves supplemented groups than in HC group. These results suggest that radish leaves may act as potential substitute for a dietary fiber capable of improving a gastrointestinal function and lipid metabolism.

  • In this study, we tried to analyze the influence of ICM(Iodinated Contrast Media) in MR imaging compare to GBCA(Gadolinium Based Contrast Agent), and as this result we discussed whether resonable or not the protocol which is MRI scan after enhanced CT scan without proper time interval in clinical field. For this research, we assembled two phantoms. which one was iodine and another one was gadolinium. We did test two phantoms in conventional MRI scan which is T1, T2, T2 FLAIR and 3D angio. After that, quantitative analysis was progressed. The results of study were as follow : SSI(Saline's Signal Intensity) was shown as each sequences 175, 1231, 333, 37 [a.u] at iodine. and 1297, 123, 757, 232 [a.u] was recorded at gadolinium. BDEPS(the Biggest Difference of EPS) was shown as each sequences 1297, 123, 757, 232 [a.u] at iodine and 793, 6, 1495, 365 [a.u] was recorded at gadolinium. At this time, EPS(Enhancement Percentage to Saline) was shown 641.1, -90.0, 127.3, 527% at iodine and 685.1, 99.4, 365.7, 1077.4% was recorded at gadolinium. BP(BDEPS's point) was shown 900, 900, 477, 900 mmol at iodine and 4, 0.2, 0.2, 40 mmol was recorded at gadolinium. CPSS(Change Point of SI to SSI) was shown 63, 423, 63, 29 mmol at iodine and each [50, 30], [4, 0.2], [4, 1], 0.2 mmol was recorded at gadolinium. According to this research, we could not only discover the fact that was iodine could effect on MR signal, but also the pattern is different as various sequences compare to gadolinium. Therefore, we expect useful diagnostic MR image in clinical field with this quantitative data for deciding protocol regarding MRI and CT scan order.

  • This study was prepared to develop American sauce with different amounts of salt through high pressure extraction and examined difference in its mechanical and sensory characteristics. Furthermore, it aimed to provide practical materials for the mass production of American sauce and other crustacean sauce products and to contribute to the development of products with superior quality and functionality by standardizing traditional cooking techniques in the food service industry. In American sauce, salt content did not have a significant effect on water content and ash content but had a significant effect on color, pH and salinity. Na and K contents increased with increasing salt content. In addition, Mg and P contents were highest in J4 containing 0.4% of salt, but they did not show any regular tendency according to salt content. For total free amino acids, 29 kinds were detected in J0 and J1, 30 in J2, 31 in J3, and 33 in J4. Detection was highest in J3 containing 0.3% of salt, and the content level was highest particularly for arginine among essential amino acids, for glutamic acid, alanine, serine, ${\beta}$-alanine and ${\alpha}$-aminoadipic acid among flavor enhancing amino acids, and for ${\gamma}$-Aminoisobutyric acid among other amino acids. We measured lipid peroxidation in American sauce using lipid extracted from a mouse brain and confirmed that the amount of antioxidant substances extracted was largest in J0 containing no salt. The results of measuring lipid peroxidation and DPPH showed that the antioxidant effect was high when salt was not contained. In the results of the sensory test, overall quality was highest in J3 containing 0.3% of salt, showing that the addition of salt affects the evaluation of overall quality. Summing up the presents of this study as presented above, we cannot expect an effect of antioxidant functionality; however, according to the results of the mechanical quality evaluation and the sensory test, American sauce containing 0.3% of salt is considered the optimal product in terms of quality. Using these results as practical materials for the mass production of crustacean sauce products, we expect to standardize traditional cooking techniques in the food service industry and to develop products with high quality and functionality.

  • The presence of a "prismless" layer on the enamel surface particularly on deciduous teeth has been reported by a number of workers. This structure, which appears to lack the normal prism delineations, could interfere with tag formation and hence, reduce bonding to such surfaces. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship of etching times on the effect of acid etching on primary enamel with respect to the quality of etching patterns. Labial surfaces of 32 extracted or exfoliated caries-free primary anterior teeth were used. 35% phosphoric acid gel was used only cervical regions of labial surfaces for each etching time group, 15, 30, 45 and 60 seconds. The surfaces were then washed with water for 20 seconds and dried with air spray for 20 seconds. 1. The Type 3 is 75% when the 15 seconds acid etching time was used. 2. The Type 1 is 38% and Type 2 is 75% when the 30 and 45 seconds acid etching time was used. 3. The Type 1 is 25% and Type 2 is 75% when the 60 seconds acid etching time was used. 4. An etching time of 60 seconds produced a constant and regular etching pattern. 5. There is a significant difference between the groups with respect to the patterns of etch achieved(p<0.05). 6. We confirmed that the acid induced patterns(type 1, 2) became more pronounced when the application time increased(p<0.05). $45{\sim}60$ seconds was the optimal time for etching on the primary enamel.

  • This study was carried out to analyze the nutritional composition, bioactive components, antioxidant activity, and cytotoxic assay of cancer cells on Rubus crataegifolius (RC) : R. crataegifolius from Jangseong (RC-J), R. crataegifolius from Hwaseong (RC-H), R. crataegifolius from Ulsan (RC-U), R. crataegifolius from Sunchang (RC-S), and R. crataegifolius from Pohang (RC-P). The peroximate composition had the largest amount of carbohydrate content among all kinds of RC. As far as the mineral contents of RC, Calcium comprised the highest amount ($996.6{\mu}g/g{\pm}0.8%$) and Natrium the lowest ($6.2{\mu}g/g{\pm}1.0%$). A total of 26 kinds of free amino acids and 18 kinds of component amino acids were analyzed in RC. The results of electron donating were high scavenging effects of 80% in water extract (RC-UW) and 82.6% in ethanol extract (RC-UE) in $500{\mu}g/ml$ concentration from RC-U. Also, the cytotoxic effects of cancer cells B16F10 (RC-UW and RC-PE), H1299 (RC-SW and RC-PE), and MCF-7 (RC-JW and RC-SE) appeared in RC. Therefore, we confirmed that new varieties may possibly be developed with functional materials.

  • This study aimed at evaluating the effects of a molting diet method in molt induction and post-molt performance of laying hens. Eighty-one ISA Brown hens at 62 wk of age were randomly divided into three groups. After a 4-wk preliminary period, a control group was fed a corn-soybean-based layer diet, and for the other groups, molting was induced by starvation (MS) or feeding a molting diet (MD). For the MS group, feed was withdrawn for 2 wk; this was followed by feeding a layer diet every other day for 1 wk and then the control diet. The MD group was fed a molting diet containing low-protein and low-energy diet based for 4 wk; this was followed by feeding a layer diet. They had a free access to their diet and water. Egg production, egg quality, feed intake, and ovary and oviduct weights were measured throughout the experimental period. During molting, the feed intake in the MD group was lower than that of the control. Body weight of the molted groups was significantly reduced. The MS group feeding totally ceased egg production within 4d; after the initiation of feeding and decreased; in the MD group, egg production to 9.3% by d 10. On d 14, the ovaries and oviducts of the molted groups were distinctly lighter than those of the control. Throughout the post-molt period, egg production and egg shell thickness of the molted group improved; but there were no significant differences. Eggs from the MD-fed or control group were heavier than those of the MS-fed or control group. Finally, feeding of a low-protein and low-energy diet effectively induces molting and increase post-molt production, but further research will be conducted to determine the effects of the molt diet with other ingredients and to reduce the energy level of the molt diet for maximizing molt induction and post-molt egg quality.

  • The physicochemical and physiological activities of domestic garlic from 3 different areas (Namhae, Jeju and Uiseong) were analyzed. The contents of moisture, ash, crude protein and crude fiber in garlic were little different in 3 kinds of area. Total sugar and water soluble phenolic compounds were higher in garlic from Namhae. The free sugars found in garlic were fructose, sucrose and lactose. Five kinds of organic acids were determined. Malonic acid and citric acid contents in garlic from Namhae were 23.7${\pm}$1.16 mg% and 22.1${\pm}$0.82 mg%, respectively. Total mineral content of garlic samples were in a range of 7112.6~9067.3 mg%, the potassium content showed the highest concentration (4117.3${\pm}$7.19~5175.3${\pm}$9.61 mg%). The electron donating abilities in 0.2% of garlic from Namhae and Uiseong showed 46.2${\pm}$1.25% and 37.0${\pm}$1.l6%, respectively. The nitrite scavenging effect was measured at different conditions (pH 1.2 and 4.2). The nitrite scavenging effects were higher at pH 1.2, and reached more than 95% by adding 0.2% and 0.1 % of garlic juice at pH 1.2. Addition 0.02~0.001 % garlic juice in showed the SOD-like activities. Its activity of garlic from Namhae. was a range of 6.0${\pm}$0.37~14.4~0.69%. It was found that 0.2% and 0.1% garlic showed strong antimicrobial action against growth of all the tested bacteria. Antimicrobial action. was showed 74.7${\pm}$0.70% and 51.7${\pm}$1.l1% on Sal. typhimurium in 0.2% of garlic from Namhae and Uiseong and 28.6${\pm}$0.90% on B. subtilis in garlic from Jeju.
