  • The last step in L-carnitine biosynthesis in eukaryotic organisms is mediated by ${\gamma}$-butyrobetaine hydroxylase (EC1.14.11.1), a dioxygenase that converts ${\gamma}$-butyrobetaine to L-carnitine. This enzyme was previously identified from rat liver and humans, and the peptide sequence of human ${\gamma}$-butyrobetaine hydroxylase was used to search the Neurospora crassa genome database, which led to an identification of an open reading frame (ORF) consisting of 1,407 bp encoding a polypeptide of 468 amino acids. When this protein was expressed in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the crude cell-free extract exhibited ${\gamma}$-butyrobetaine hydroxylase activity.

  • This paper compares the French Gustave Flaubert (1821-1880) and the Vietnamese Vũ Trọng Phụng (1912-1939), and explores transformations of their aesthetic experiences that led to the autonomization of French literary field in the nineteenth century and Vietnamese in the early twentieth century. Inspired from the term "archive" coined by Michel Foucault, this article argues that Flaubert, in abandoning the bourgeois tastes, contested realism and built his own writing ideology and style, which is called subjective realism. On the other hand, it also argues that Vũ Trọng Phụng, through the popular report genre, he gained success and evolved his own novel writing style, aptly called the realism of speech. It is ostensible that the transformation in the two authors' writing style and aesthetic experience was derived from the way they distanced themselves from their contemporaries' common tastes while making use of free indirect speeches, all with the aim of granting readers the autonomy of reading.

  • Đoạn tuyệt is the representative of not only Nhất Linh's literary life but also of the Tự Lực Văn Đoàn [Self-Strength Literary Group]. Đoạn tuyệt's contributions are emphasized in the following aspects: 1) critique of the feudal family model, 2) an advocate of female and individual liberation, 3) nationalistic content, though rather vague. Based on analysis of gender power relations in the masculinization of femininity exemplified in the character Loan of the novel, this paper addresses the following points: - In Đoạn tuyệt, the woman is eager to free herself from feudalist ties not to construct her own identity but to identify her with men's identities. - The construction of new feminine identities was conditioned in new rising discourses of Western modernity-based nationalisms in pre-revolutionary Vietnam. - The feminization of masculinity echoes the crisis of Vietnamese masculine in facing colonial power.

  • This study was conducted to compare and evaluate the iodide specific ion electrode method (ISE) and neutron activation analysis method (NAA) for determining iodine in human milk and cow milk. The neutron irradiation and counting operations were carried out at the TRIGA Mark-III reactor facility of the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. The mean concentrations of iodine in human milk samples by the ISE and the NAA were 1450$\mu\textrm{g}$/L and 1350$\mu\textrm{g}$/L, respectively. The levels were not significantly different. In cow milk samples , the mean concentrations of iodine by the ISE and the NAA were 250$\mu\textrm{g}$.L and 200$\mu\textrm{g}$/L, respectively. here, the ISE reading was significantly higher than the NAA. reading. The correlations of the two methods were 0.92(p<0.001) for human milk samples and 0.65 for cow milk samples . The coefficient of variation was 8.3% in the ISE and 4.9% in the NAA. Therefore, the iodide specific ion electrode method is sample and fast method, but probably not in processed milk since free sulfhydryl groups in milk are also detected by the iodide electrode. However, these also indicate that the ISE method may be applicable to human milk and pasteurized milk if the conventional pasteurization time-temperature relationship of standards is not exceeded. On the other hand, the NAA method , which is independent of chemical forms and matrix, can be used for determining iodine in all kinds of milk and foods.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the energy expenditure of normal-weight and overweight Korean middle-aged women (40-60 yr). Middle-aged oveweight ($BMI\;{\geq}\;25$, n= 20) and normal-weight women were ($BMI\;{\leq}\;23$, n = 20) were recruited in Seoul. Anthropometric measurements, body composition, energy intake, daily activity time, and energy costs of some daily activities were measured. Energy expenditure at rest and while reading the newspaper, washing dishes, mopping the floor, and walking on a treadmill at 1.0, 2.0, 3.5mph were measured by indirect calorimeter and total daily energy expenditure was estimated by summation of energy costs of different activities. The overweight group had significantly higher values of body weight, triceps skinfold thickness, thigh circumference, waist circumference, hip circumference, BMI, WTR, WHR, body surface area, percentage body fat, fat mass, fat free mass (FFM), and muscle mass compared to normal-weight group. The energy intakes of both groups were close to RDA and other nutrient intake status was also satisfactory. There were no significant differences in intakes of energy and nutrients between the two groups. Overweight subjects showed lower energy expenditure per kg body weight for reading the newspaper, washing dishes and mopping the floor, and walking on a treadmill at 2.0 and 3.5 mph, however, energy expenditure per kg FFM did not differ between the two groups. Daily energy expenditure for all activities was significantly higher in the overweight compared to the normal-weight group due to higher body weight. Both overweight and normal-weight groups showed negative energy balance between energy intake and energy expenditure, and there was no significant difference in energy balance between the two roups. Total daily energy expenditure correlated highly with FFM and body surface area. The result of present study does not offer an explanation on the energy imbalance and weight gain of overweight women.

  • In this paper, we propose a method to extract and analyze palm line with fuzzy method. In order to extract the palm part, we transform the original RGB color space to YCbCr color space and extract sin colors ranging Y:65-255, Cb:25-255, Cr:130-255 and use it as a threshold. Possible noise is removed by 8-directional contour tracking algorithm and morphological characteristic of the palm. Then the edge is extracted from that noise-free image by stretching method and sobel mask Then the fuzzy binarization algorithm is applied to remove any minute noise so that we have only the palm lines and the boundary of the hand. Since the palm line reading is done with major lines, we use the morphological characteristics of the analyzable palm lines and fuzzy inference rules. Experiment verifies that the proposed method is better in visibility and thus more analyzable in palm reading than the old method.

  • The purpose of this study is to see and compare the contemporary Korean-Thai female poems from a feminine standpoint to newly clarify the textuality of their poems. The textuality defined in this manuscript is the text of Korean-Thai contemporary female poems. To newly clarify the textuality of their poems are to go against the existing discussion method and to newly read out the text as re-vision method. This discussion is to analyse deeply how the central exis composing a text which is the identity of woman in a body, appearance of uttrance, or action of abjection is exposed in gender space and to identify the poem's textuality. In other words, through in-depth analysis of the text of poems, which are very complicated as a skein of yarn, place a high value of Korean-Thai female poems. Transcending time, nations and races, if the text of female poem would not free from a biased male-dominated thinking or make a mystery of female poem textuality without critics or tend to be stereotype the text of poem as pathos of female, it would not get out from man-centered reading. To escape from the state of sexual discrimination, the new reading method was seriously analysed and found out that the female text poems not only implicate sexual discrimination but also link to expansive cultural and social structure. And for that reason, this study raise a question to male-dominant sexual discriminated norm. It is very significant that through this elaborate and in-depth text poem analysis, a creation process of female poem is traced. Eventually, the comparative study on Korean-Thai female poems is meaningful and worthy in regard to the contribution to promotion of cultural exchange between korea-Thai two nations and furthermore extend to East Asia to make a basement for the vitalization of Asia comparative literature.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze current status and teacher librarians' perceptions of school library space composition and indoor environment, and propose some methods for the school library to be a basic educational facility. The space most secured by the 126 teacher librarians who participated in the survey was the free reading area, and the space with the lowest level was the media production and group project area. The most important types of spaces for teacher librarians are the teaching area and the free reading area, while the recognition of the importance of media production and group project areas is relatively low. Among the elements of indoor environmental assessment, they showed that safety and comfort were the most important but diversity and flexibility were relatively less important. The result of this analysis is different from the school and library policy direction that emphasizes the learning commons and maker spaces. Teacher librarians still seem to appreciate the importance of traditional library space. Therefore, it is necessary to include the establishment and operation of maker spaces and learning commons in the teacher librarians training and retraining process. In addition, it is necessary to increase the participation of users such as teachers, students, and parents in space composition and interior design initiatives to increase the user's interior environment satisfaction.

  • In the contemporary American cinematic landscape, there is a distinctive tendency to depict the disturbing ways in which characters with brain damages perceive, remember, and think about the world. Despite its attempts to examine the socio-political implications of these characters' subjectivities, the previous scholarship on this trend of film was limited in being either too pessimistically deterministic or too euphorically optimistic. Critically reading neuroscientific discourses on the brain-damaged subject from the perspective of Giorgio Agamben's critique of biopolitics, this paper explores how the contemporary American cinema of the impaired brain attempts to mediate the neurologically inexplicable affects of those subjects who are in the neurological state of exception and to express their experiences of a becoming-nonhuman. By closely reading Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan and Alejandro $Gonz{\acute{a}}lez$ $I{\tilde{n}}{\acute{a}}rritu^{\prime}s$ Birdman in this regard, I show how the two films, by employing different sets of cinematic free indirect techniques, express the neurologically impaired subject's affective experience of a becoming-nonhuman animal in different ways, and thereby to a more or less extent act as 'profaned' neuro-biopolitical apparatuses.
