Soda-AQ pulp made from sugarcane bagasse (SCB) and oil palm trunk (OPT) were bleached in element chlorine free (ECF) sequence. Bleached SCB and OPT pulp was achieve higher brightness than 85.0% ISO. Viscosity of SCB bleached pulp and OPT bleached pulp were achieved 18-27 cPs and 18-26 cPs. In 7.8% active chlorine dioxide addition, bleached SCB pulp was shown 88.7% ISO brightness and 20.4 cPs viscosity. And bleached OPT pulp was shown 88.5% ISO brightness and 18.8 cPs viscosity with 7.8% active chlorine dioxide addition.
We examined 165 unchlorinated natural drinking water samples for the presence of E. coli group resistant to antimicrobial agent and chlorine in nothern Gyeongbuk area in 2007. Among 165 water samples, 21 samples(12.7%) were positive to total coliforms and Six genus, 16 strains of E. coli groups isolated from 16 samples showed resistance against more than one antimicrobial agent such as Ampicillin, Tetracycline and Chloroamphenicol. Among 16 strains, 14 strains resistant to Ampicillin, 9 strains resistant to Tetracycline and one strain resistant to Chloroampenicol. but all 16 strains did not contain any integron gene cassettes, which contribute to the spread of antimicrobial resistance alleles by lateral gene transfer of gene cassettes in a variety of enteric bacteria. The minimal inhibitory concentration(MIC) of 14 strains which showed resistant to Ampicillin was between $12{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ and $32{\mu}g/m{\ell}$, Nine strains resistant to Tetracycline showed between $32{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ and $128{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ and one strain resistant to Chloroampenicol showed $128{\mu}g/m{\ell}$. The chlorine sensitivity of 16 strains isolated from unchlorinated natural water sample did not show any difference among strains by the concentration of initial free chlorine and elapsed time after chlorine treatment. All 16 strains were killed after 1hr. exposure at $0.2mg/m{\ell}$ of free chlorine per liter or 30minutes exposure at $0.4mg/m{\ell}$ of free chlorine per liter.
수체감소계수를 산출한 결과 초기주입량 1 mg/L, $25^{\circ}C$의 조건에서 653 $day^{-1}$로 가장 크게 나타났고, $5^{\circ}C$, 초기주입량 6 mg/L의 조건에서 3.42 $day^{-1}$로 가장 낮았다.
This research sought to compare chlorine, chlorine dioxide and ozone as chemical disinfectants of drinking water, with inactivation of total coliform as the indicator. The inactivation of total coliform was tested against several variables, including the dose of disinfectant, contact time, pH, temperature and DOC. A series of batch processes were performed on water samples taken from the outlet of a settling basin in a conventional surface water treatment system that is provided with the raw water drawn from the mid-stream of the Han River. Injection of 1 mg/L of chlorine, chlorine dioxide and ozone resulted in nearly 2.4, 3.0 and 3.9 log inactivation, respectively, of total coliform at 5 min. To achieve 99.9 % the inactivation, the disinfectants were required in concentrations of 1.70, 1.00 and 0.60 mg/L for chlorine, chlorine dioxide and ozone, respectively. Bactericidal effects generally decreased as pH increased in the range of pH 6 to 9. The influence of pH change on the killing effect of chlorine dioxide was not strong, but that on ozone and free chlorine was sensitive. The activation energies of chlorine, chlorine dioxide and ozone were 36,053, 29,822 and 24,906 J/mol for coliforms with inactivation effects being shown in the lowest orders of these.

A microfluidic device for real-time monitoring of residual free chlorine and pH in water based on optical absorption is proposed. The device consists of a serpentine micromixer for mixing samples with a reagent, and a photodiode and light emitting diode(LED) for the detection of light absorbance at specific wavelengths, determined for specific reagent combinations. Spectral analyses of the samples mixed with N, N'-diethyl-p-phenylenediamine(DPD) reagent for chlorine determination and bromothymol blue(BTB) for pH measurement are performed, and the wavelengths providing the most useful linear changes in absorbance with chlorine concentration and pH are determined and used to select the combination of LED and photodiode wavelengths for each analyte. In tests using standard solutions, the device is shown to give highly reproducible results, demonstrating the feasibility of the device for the inexpensive and continuous monitoring of water quality parameters with very low reagent consumption.
Chlorine is widely used as a disinfectant in drinking-water systems throughout the world. Chlorine residual was used as an indicator for prediction of water quality in water distribution systems. The variation of chlorine residual in drinking water distribution systems of Suwon city was simulated using EPANET. EPANET is a computerized simulation model which predicts the dynamic hydraulic and water quality behavior within a water distribution system operating over an extended time period. Sampling and analysis were performed to calibrated the computer model in 1999 (Aug. Summer). Water quality variables used in simulations are temperature, roughness coefficient, pipe diameter, pipe length, water demand, velocity and so on. Extended water residence time affected water quality due to the extended reaction time in some areas. All area showed the higher concentration of chlorine residual than 0.2mg/l(standard). So it can be concluded that any area in Suwon city is not in biological regrowth problem. Rechlorination turned out to be an useful method for uniform concentration of free chlorine residual in distribution system. The cost of disinfectant could be saved remarkably by cutting down the initial chlorine concentration to the level which guarantees minimum concentration (0.2mg/l) throughout the distribution system.
Degradations of phenol and chlorinated compounds mixtures were studied with ultrasound of 20 kHz and 0.57, 1.14 W/mL. In presence of carbon tetrachloride (CT), degradation rate of phenol is faster than chloroform (CF), dichloromethane (DCM) and phenol solution. It is due to that CT generates of free chlorine (HOCl and $OCl^-$) from the sonochemical degradation and plays a role of hydrogen atom scavenger. CF and DCM are react with free chlorine, so amount of free chlorine is smaller than CT solution. The degradation rates of chlorinated compounds decreased with co-presence of phenol in the solution due to the distribution ultrasonic energy to both compounds. The measured chloride ion was lower than the theoretical concentration assuming complete degradation. This means not all the contaminants destructed went through complete degradation.
Chlorination and UV illumination are being widely applied to inactivate a number of pathogenic microbials in the environment. Here, we evaluated the inactivation efficiency of individual and combined treatments of chlorination and UV under various aqueous conditions. UV dosage was required higher in waste water than in phosphate buffer to achieve the similar disinfecting efficiency. Free chlorine generated by electrolysis of waste water was abundant enough to inactivate microbials. Based on these, hybrid system composed of sequential treatment of electrolysis-mediated chlorination and UV treatment was developed under waste water conditions. Compared to individual treatments, hybrid system inactivated bacteria (i.e., E. coli and S. typhimurium) and viruses (i.e., MS-2 bacteriophage, rotavirus, and norovirus) more efficiently. The hybrid system also mitigated the photo re-pair of UV-driven DNA damages of target bacteria. The combined results suggested the hybrid system would achieve high inactivation efficiency and safety on various pathogenic microbials in wastewater.
