Particle-size distribution in soils is one of the most fundamental physical properties of soils. One of the latest developments in the study of particle-size distributions has focused on the use of fractal theories. In this study, the fragmentation fractals were used for determining the characteristics of the particle-size distribution curve. It was shown that the mass-size distribution method was more practical than the cumulative number-size distribution method. From the co-relation between fractal dimensions($D_{tot}$) and the coefficient of uniformity($C_{u}$), there was a sharp increase in fractal dimensions for $C_{u}$<4, but fractal dimension converged the single value for $D_{u}$$\geq$6. Fractal dimensions were affected by small sized particles for $C_{c}$$\geq$3 and large sized particles for $C_{c}$/<3. As a result of the analysis of the influence of the effective size($D_{10}$), it was observed that the changes of $D_{tot}$/ were nominal beyond the effective size.
The objectives of this study were to investigate the aggregate fragmentation in wet-sieving and to evaluate the relationship between the aggregate fragmentation fractal dimension and macro-porosity of upland soils, using three different textural types of soils including Gopyeng series (Fine, Typic Hapludalfs), Gyuam series (Fine silty over coarse silty, Fluvaquentic Eutrudepts), and Jungdong series (Coarse loamy, Typic Udifluvents) located in Gyeonggi province. Undisturbed soil samples with five replicates were seasonally sampled and used for measuring water stable aggregate, macropores, and physico-chemical properties of soils. The aggregate stability in wet-sieving was digitalized as three types of fragmentation fractal dimension ($D_f$), geometric mean diameter (GMD), and mean weight diameter (MWD). $D_f$ had higher correlation with GMD than with MWD. Seasonal aggregate stability showed the highest values in summer, and decreased in the order of spring and autumn. The macroporosity had higher in topsoil, in autumn, and in ridge, than in plow pan layer, in summer, and in row, respectively. The relationship between $D_f$ and macroporosity, especially more than 99 m, showed high correlation only in soils with $D_f$ less than 3.1, which means more aggregated soils compared to soils with $D_f$ more than 3.1. Besides, in the soils with the fractal dimension less than 3.1, the power function relation between saturated hydraulic conductivity and macroporosity more than 99 m had relatively high determinant coefficient, and vice versa. Therefore, it could be thought that fragmentation fractal dimension is available for confirming macroporosity induced from aggregation.

Particles of soil are crushed when soil is compacted in the in-situ or lab. Among many factors that affect the crush of particles, compaction energy is a major factor. Because the crush of particles can change physical properties, the analysis of effect of compaction energy is very important. In this study, the fragmentation fractals were used for determining the change in grain size distribution and the effect due to change in grain size distribution was estimated. Compaction energy was increased by 50, 100, 200 and 300% based on the energy of standard A compaction test. As a result, grain size distribution curves were changed and fine particles increased as compaction energy were increased. Relative compaction were ranged between $93.38{\sim}107.67$. Fractal dimension of each site increased as compaction energy increased. Relative compaction is proportional to the fractal dimension but coefficients of permeability were in inverse proportional to the involution of fractal dimension.
Gravels forming part of the base of flexible pavements experience abrasion and crushing as a result of static and dynamic loads. Abrasion takes place when the sharp corners of the particles of gravel are removed as a result of compressive and shear loads. As a result of abrasion, the particles change in shape. Crushing is caused by the fragmentation of the particles into a mixture of many small particles of varying sizes. In this study, the abrasion and crushing of gravels are evaluated experimentally and analytically. The laboratory component of this study involves gravels that were subjected to abrasion and dynamic compression tests. The evaluation of the abrasion and crushing experienced by the gravel was carried out using fractals. In this study, the fractal dimension concept from fractal theory is used to evaluate: (a) the changes in shape, and (b) the crushing (fragmentation) of the original particles of gravel. It was determined that the fractal dimension of the profile of the particles decreased as a result of abrasion. With respect to crushing, the fragmentation fractal dimension was found to increase with the degree of breakage of the gravel. To understand the influence of crushing on the permeability of the gravels, the hydraulic conductivity of the gravels was measured before and after crushing. The hydraulic conductivity of the gravels was found to decrease with an increase in their level of crushing. Also, changes in the angle of friction of the granular materials as a result of abrasion was calculated using the Krumbein's roundness chart. The angle of friction of the granular materials was found to decrease as a result of abrasion.

The various spatial structure of biological habitat has tighten relationship with biodiversity. Due to increasing of population, development of agriculture and urban structure, various change of landscape has became these days. These change of landscape has raised the decrease of habitat and landscape fragmentation. This paper summarizes research to analysis vegetation index according to P/A ratio, Shape Index, and Fractal dimension using Landsat Thematic Mapper(TM). The analysis of landscape fragmentation using NDVI(Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) 0.5~1 has the most profitable for detection of vegetation fragmentation. The analysis of vegetation index of Seoul and Kyunggi province has also showed that Fractal dimension has the most fragmentation index. In near future, time series analysis is needed for fragmentation of vegetation on the same area, and for various landuse of fragmentation analysis. These researches were carried out for preservation strategy of vegetation and biodiversity.
A new fragmentation model, called the GRS (the generation model of weathered residual soils) model, was proposed in this study, This model could identify the formation of a residual soil. This model is based on the phenomena that as the soil was weathered more highly, soil particles were smaller and pores were more expanded simultaneously. The possibility of fragmentation, $P_F,$ which was based on the fractal theory, was introduced in this model. There were some fundamental notions in the GRS model that soil particles were generated as the rock is fragmented, and the fragmentation of the rock was performed step by step. The $P_F,$ of the rock was not constant at each fragmentation steps. As a result of application on the GRS model, there were more residue where $P_{Fi}s$ were small at any particle size. There was a S-shape of PSD curve at the concave shape of $P_{Fi},$ and the PSD curve goes to a gaped graded curve at the convex shape of $P_{Fi}.$ The shape of PSD curve was concave in the case of small $P_{Fi}s.$ The value of $P_{Fi}$ increased with the coefficient of uniformity $(C_u)$ and the fragmentation fractal dimension $(D_r),$ but had no relation with the coefficient of gradation $(C_C)$.

Since particle size distribution curves are useful to estimate permeability of soil, many formulae for permeability coefficient (k) have been published using the parameter from the curves and factors, such as grain size, particle shape and void ratio of soils. However, the parameters such as $C_c,\;C_u$ and $D_n$ derived from only some discrete points on the curve are insufficient to represent the whole gradation. In this paper fractal dimension which is quite new concept and known to be able to represent the entire curve of particle size distribution is employed for the parameters. An empirical formula of permeability coefficient has been developed with fractal dimension and percent of finer than 0.075 mm. The formula developed from this study has confirmed its effectiveness by a series of laboratory tests and comparison to other published formulae. It is found that permeability coefficient is proportional to fractal dimension and inversely proportional to percent of fines.
The dynamic compressive behavior of concrete after freezing and thawing tests are investigated by using the split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) technique. The stress-strain curves of concrete under dynamic loading are measured and analyzed. The setting numbers of freeze-thaw cycles are 0, 25, 50, and 75 cycles. Test results show that the dynamic strength decreases and peak strain increases with the increasing of freeze-thaw cycles. Based on the Weibull distribution model, statistical damage constitutive model for dynamic stress-strain response of concrete after freeze-thaw cycles was proposed. At last, the fragmentation test of concrete subjected to dynamic loading and freeze-thaw cycles is carried out using sieving statistics. The distributions of the fragment sizes are analyzed based on fractal theory. The fractal dimensions of concrete increase with the increasing of both freeze-thaw cycle and strain rate. The relations among the fractal dimension, strain rates and freeze-thawing cycles are developed.
Fault gouge samples were collected from the fault cores of the boundary faults between the Cretaceous Basement and the Tertiary Waeup Basin. Fractal dimensions (D) were obtained by using survivor grains which were analysed from six thin sections of the gouges under the optical microscope. The elliptical survivor grains show a shape preferred orientation almost parallel to clay foliation in matrix, suggesting that it was formed by the rotation of the survivor grains in abundant fine-grained matrix during repeated fault slips. The size distributions of the survivor grains follow power-laws with fractal dimensions in the 2.40-3.02 range. D values of all samples but one are higher than a specific D value equal to 2.58 which predicts the self similarity of fragmentation process in constrained comminution model (Sammis et al., 1987), which indicates large fault slip and multiple faulting. Probably the higher D values than 2.58 mean the non-self-similar evolution of cataclastic rocks where fragmentation mechanism changed from constrained comminution to the grain abrasion accompanying selective fracture of larger grains.
Using fractal dimensionality theory proposed by Riew and Sposito (1991), we attempted to analyze quantitatively the characteristics of porous distribution for built-in soils in the mini-lysimeter and artificial seed-bed media. The 2" stainless core soil samples were taken from lysimeter soils. Artificial seed-bed media were compacted in the acrylic core filled with raw materials consisted of cocopeat, zeolite and perlite. N (Constant number of partitioned group size smaller media volumes) and r (Self-similarity ratio) parameters consisting of fractal dimension D=log(N)/log(1/r) were obtained by Excel Programme using the Riew and Sposito's fractal model. The pore distribution of tested media was screened in pore size and its occurring frequency. The results reveal that the distribution range of pores is wider in the lysimeter soils than in the seed-bed media, while average size of pores in the media is smaller in lysimeter core soils than in seed-bed media.
