  • Crack penetration behavior by fatigue crack propagation and measurements of AE before-and-after crack penetration were examined using SS41 steel plate. Experimental crack shape of SU type was in good agreement with calculated shape rather than S type. Crack propagation behavior on the front surface appears not to change markedly after penetration. However, crack growth on the back surface appears to accelerate as reported by author. As a crack propagates, AE occurred heavily just before penetration. Then, it decreases and crack is penetrating. A transition from plane strain to plane stress was observed by fractographic study. At this time, separation of fracture surface was shown which affects AE occurrence.

  • Cemental tears are uncommon form of root fracture that can lead to rapid localized periodontal attachment loss. Studies have described periodontal breakdown as being associated with the separation of the cementum from the underlying tooth structure. The aim of this case report is to assess the outcome of treatment of cemental tear with several surgical treatment regimens. Three patients with cemental tear were treated with different surgical method. In all three cases, the cemental tear occurred on maxillary right central incisors. In each case, the root fragment were removed, the localized defect was treated using different surgical methods including guided tissue regeneration and bone graft followed by scaling and root planting. In all three cases, symptoms subsided after the treatment and clinical attachment level was improved up to 2 mm at 3 month after surgery. Both conventional and regenerative periodontal surgery could achieve successful outcomes.

  • Full-mouth reconstruction of a patient using dental implants is a challenge if there is vertical and horizontal bone resorption, since this includes the gingival area and restricts the position of the implants. however, hard- and soft-tissue grafting may allow the implants to be placed into the desired position. Although it is possible to regenerate lost tissues, an alternative is to use fixed detachable prostheses that restore the function and the esthetics of the gingiva and teeth. Various material combinations including metal/acrylic, metal/ceramic, and zirconia/ceramic have been used for constructing this type of restoration. Other problems include wear, separation or fracture of the resin teeth from the metal/acrylic prosthesis, chipping or fracture of porcelain from the metal/ceramic or zirconia/ceramic prosthesis, and fracture of the framework in some free-end prostheses. With virtually unbreakable, chip-proof, life-like nature, monolithic zirconia frameworks can prospectively replace other framework materials. This clinical report describes the restoration of a patient with complete fixed detachable maxillary and mandibular prostheses made of monolithic zirconia with dental implants. The occluding surfaces were made of monolithic zirconia, to decrease the risk of chipping or fracture. The prostheses were esthetically pleasing, and no clinical complications have been reported after two years.

  • In the present study, superflux nickel capillary supports for gas and vapor separation membranes were prepared by a combined process of NIPS and sintering. Nickel capillary precursors were prepared by NIPS process from PSf-Ni-DMAC-PEG400 dope solution and was sintered at various temperatures in $H_2$ atmosphere to reliably produce Ni capillary support. The optimized Ni capillary support has an outer and inner diameters of 722 and $550{\mu}m$, and its thickness was $94{\mu}m$. It has 3-dimensional pore channel network and its porosity and mean pore diameter was 26% and $4{\mu}m$, respectively. Also, its mechanical strength was tested in tensile mode: its fracture load was 2.84 kgf and the fracture elongation was 13%. Finally, its single gas permeance was measured: He, $N_2$, $O_2$, and $CO_2$ permeance was 432,327, 281,119, 264,259, and 193,143 GPU, respectively. The superflux behavior could be explained from viscous flow through the macropores having a diameter of $4{\mu}m$ and narrow thickness. It could be concluded that the superflux behavior of the Ni capillary support was from the 3-D pore channel network and the small thickness.

  • In this study, damage evaluation of glass fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites was investigated with acoustic emission method. Specimens of 1.7mm thickness laminate were made from PET and 7 layers o171ass fabrics. Notch and impact loading were added to the specimen and normal tensile test and tensile test with the dead load were carried out. AE signal was measured as the functions of notch ratio to the width0 and impact energy in order to find out the correlation between fracture mode and AE parameters. The result has shown that low amplitude of AE signal was due to the microcrack of matrix and its growth, whereas the amplitude in the mid range was the response to the delamination and interfacial separation. In the range of high amplitude above 90dB. the fracture of glass fabric was found. Tensile strength decreased with increasing notch ratio to the width and impact energy because of tile effect or delamination, the cracking of matrix and stress concentration. In proportion to the size of damaged area. AE signal showed its wider range of frequency and energy as well as increased number of hits.

  • The most effective material in the shape memory alloy(SMA) is the TiNi alloy, because its shape recovery characteristics are very excellent. We molded the composite material with shape memory function. The fiber of it is $Ti_{50}-Ni_{50}$ shape memory alloy and matrix of it is epoxy resin(Araldite B41, Hardner HT903. Ciba Geigy), its adhesive and optical sensitivity are very excellent. It was assured that the composite material could be used as model material of photoelastic experiment for intelligent materials or structures. In this research, the composite material with shape memory function is used as model material of photoelastic experiment. Photoelastic experimental hybrid method is developed in this research, it is assured that it is useful on the obtaining stress intensity factor and the separation of stress components from only isochromatic data. The measuring method of stress intensity factor of intelligent material by photoelastic experiment is introduced. In the mode I state, we can know that stress intensity factors are decreased more than 50% of stress intensity factor of room temperature when temperature of fiber is greater than 4$0^{\circ}C$, prestrain greater than 5% and fiber volume ratio greater than 0.42% and that stress intensity factors are decreased by 100% when fiber volume ratio is greater than 0.84%, prestrain greater than 5% and temperature greater than 60 $^{\circ}C$.

  • In this paper, a novel approach to estimate cohesive laws for the mode I fracture of the graphene is presented by combining molecular dynamic simulations and an inverse algorithm based on field projection method and finite element method. The determination of crack-tip cohesive laws of the graphene based on continuum mechanics is a non-trivial inverse problem of finding unknown tractions and separations from atomic simulations. The displacements of molecular dynamic simulations in a region far away from the crack tip are transferred to finite element nodes by using moving least square approximation. Inverse analyses for extracting unknown cohesive tractions and separation behind the crack tip can be carried out by using conservation nature of the interaction J- and M-integrals with numerical auxiliary fields which are generated by systematically imposing uniform surface tractions element-by-element along the crack surfaces in finite element models. The preset method can be a very successful approach to extract crack-tip cohesive laws from molecular dynamic simulations as a scale bridging method.

  • Objective : We analyzed the clinical and radiologic features of posterior apophyseal ring separation (PARS) with lumbar disc herniation and suggest the proper management options according to the PARS characteristics. Methods : We reviewed case series of patients with PARS who underwent surgery of lumbar disc herniation. Preoperative symptoms, neurologic status, Body Mass Index, preoperative and postoperative Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and Korean-Oswestry Disability Index (K-ODI) scores, operation types were obtained. PARS size, locations, the degree of resection were assessed. Results : PARS was diagnosed in 109 (7.5%) patients among 1448 patients given surgical treatment for single level lumbar disc herniation. There were 55 (50.5%) small PARS and 54 (49.5%) large PARS. Among the large PARS group, 15 (27.8%) had lower endplate PARS of upper vertebra at the level of disc herniation. Thirty-nine (72.2%) were upper endplate PARS of lower vertebra. Among the group with upper endplate PARS of lower vertebra, unresected PARS was diagnosed in 12 (30.8%) cases and resected PARS was diagnosed in 27 (69.2%) cases. VAS and K-ODI scores changes were $3.6{\pm}2.9$ and $5.4{\pm}6.4$ in the unresected PARS group, $5.8{\pm}2.1$ and $11.3{\pm}7.1$ in the resected PARS group. The group with upper endplate PARS of lower vertebra showed significant difference of VAS (p=0.01) and K-ODI (p=0.013) score changes between unresected and resected PARS groups. Conclusion : The large PARS of upper endplate in lower vertebra should be removed during the surgery of lumbar disc herniation. High level or bilateral side of PARS should be widely decompressed and arthrodesis procedures are necessary if there is a possibility of secondary instability.

  • This work shows how the adoption of a dual-dicing process for silicon wafer separation affects the thermal-cycling reliability (i.e. $-65^{\circ}C$ to $150^{\circ}C$) of the semiconductor devices utilizing lead-on-chip (LOC) die attach technique. In-situ examinations show that conventional single-dicing process directly attacks the edge region of diced devices but dual-dicing process effectively protects the edge region of diced devices from dicing-induced mechanical damage. Probably, this is because the preferential and sacrificial fracture of notched regions induced on the active surface of wafers saves the edge regions. It was also investigated through thermal-cycling tests that the number of thermal-cycling induced failures is much lower at the dual-dicing process than the single-dicing process.
