In the present study, kenaf fibers were treated with sodium hydroxide using soaking and ultrasonic methods prior to biocomposite processing, respectively. The effect of alkali treatment on the kenaf-PLA interfacial adhesion and mechanical and thermal characteristics of kenaf/poly(lactic acid) biocomposites was investigated in terms of their interfacial shear strength, flexural properties, dynamic mechanical properties and thermal stability and also microscopic observations of kenaf fibers and the composite fracture surfaces. As a result, use of both soaking and ultrasonic methods for treating kenaf fiber surfaces played a role in increasing the fiber-matrix adhesion and the mechanical properties of the biocomposites. Their characteristics depended not only on the fiber surface treatment method but also on the treatment condition like alkali concentration and treatment time.
This study carried out a series of experiments involving impact tests (Drop Weight type & Charpy type with a standard specimen and newly designed I-type specimen), hardness tests, and fracture surface observations of French-made roll shell steel (F), abnormal roll shell steel (M), reheated roll shell steel (R), and S25C steel under heat treatment conditiAn experimental study was carried out to study the solid-liquid mixture upward hydraulic transport of solid particles in vertical and inclined annuli with a rotating inner cylinder. The lift forces acting on a fluidized particle play a central role in many important applications such as the removal of drill cuttings in horizontal drill holes, sand transport in fractured reservoirs, sediment transport, the cleaning of particles from surfaces, etc. In this study a clear acrylic pipe was used to observe the movement of solid particles. Annular velocities varied from 0.4 to 1.2 m/s. The effect of the annulus inclination and drill pipe rotation on the carrying capacity of a drilling fluid, particle rising velocity, and pressure drop in a slim hole annulus were measured for fully-developed flows of water and aqueous solutions of CMC (sodium carboxymethyl cellulose) and bentonite. The rotation of the inner cylinder was efficient at carrying particles to some degree. For a higher particle volume concentration, the hydraulic pressure loss of the mixture flow increased because of the friction between the wall and solids or between solids.

Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates can be used more efficiently in strengthening applications by applying prestress to the CFRP laminates. A key problem for prestressing with CFRP laminates is anchoring the laminates. These may include fracture to the CFRP laminates due to excessive gripping force or slippage of the CFRP laminates out of the anchorage zone caused by low friction between the anchor device and the lamiantes. The main objective of this study is the development of an applicative mold-type anchorage system for prestressed CFRP laminates through experimental study. The experimental parameters were the type of anchorage detail and the effect of surface treatment. The test results showed that the developed anchor assures 100% CFRP laminate strength.

Borosilicate glass (81% $SiO_2$-2% $Al_2O_3$-13% $B_2O_3$-4% $Na_2O_3$) was prepared, and the glass was ion exchanged in $KNO_3$ powder containing different temperature and time. The $K^+-Na^+$ ion exchange takes place at the glass surface and creates compressed stress, which raise the mechanical strength of the glass. The depth profile of $Na^+$ and $K^+$ was observed by electron probe micro analyzer. With the increasing heat-treatment time from 0min to 20min, the depth profile was increased from 17.1um to 29.4um, but mechanical properties were decreased. It was also found out that excessive heat treatment brings stress relaxation. The Vickers hardness, Fracture Toughness and bending strength of ion exchanged samples at $570^{\circ}C$ for 10min were $821.8H_v$, $1.3404MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$, and 953MPa, which is about 120%, 180%, and 450% higher than parent borosilicate glass, respectively. Transmittance was analyzed by UV-VIS-NIR spectrophotometer. Transmittance of ion exchanged borosilicate glass was decreased slightly at visible-range. It can be expected that transparent bulletproof materials in more light-weight and thinner by ion exchanged borosilicate glass.

This paper presents experimental research work for the evaluation of one-dimensional and two-dimensional acoustic source locations with 50m length of a precast prestressed concrete box girder. Acoustic events are generated by the impacts of Schmidt Hammer and the impact signals are detected by acoustic emission sensors mounted on the concrete web surface of PSC box girder with the average spacing of 9.34m. Based on the amplitude of detected acoustic signals, considering the noises developed in PSC box girder bridges, the arrival times of acoustic signals are estimated by the first arrival times of 0Volt, 0.5Volt, and 1.0Volt amplitude in each signal. Using Least Square Method, the velocities and the source locations of acoustic signals are evaluated. Based on the test results, the spacing of AE sensors and the AE sensor networks are discussed to reduce the source location errors.
The use of high-strength concrete (HSC) has significantly increased over the last decade, especially in offshore structures, long-span bridges, and tall buildings. The behavior of such concrete is noticeably different from that of normal-strength concrete (NSC) due to its different microstructure and mode of failure. In particular, the shear capacity of structural members made of HSC is a concern and must be carefully evaluated. The shear fracture surface in HSC members is usually trans-granular (propagates across coarse aggregates) and is therefore smoother than that in NSC members, which reduces the effect of shear transfer mechanisms through aggregate interlock across cracks, thus reducing the ultimate shear strength. Current code provisions for shear design are mainly based on experimental results obtained on NSC members having compressive strength of up to 50MPa. The validity of such methods to calculate the shear strength of HSC members is still questionable. In this study, a new approach based on artificial neural networks (ANNs) was used to predict the shear capacity of NSC and HSC beams without shear reinforcement. Shear capacities predicted by the ANN model were compared to those of five other methods commonly used in shear investigations: the ACI method, the CSA simplified method, Response 2000, Eurocode-2, and Zsutty's method. A sensitivity analysis was conducted to evaluate the ability of ANNs to capture the effect of main shear design parameters (concrete compressive strength, amount of longitudinal reinforcement, beam size, and shear span to depth ratio) on the shear capacity of reinforced NSC and HSC beams. It was found that the ANN model outperformed all other considered methods, providing more accurate results of shear capacity, and better capturing the effect of basic shear design parameters. Therefore, it offers an efficient alternative to evaluate the shear capacity of NSC and HSC members without stirrups.
Brazilian disc test is one of the most widely used experiments in the literature of geo-mechanics. In this work, the pre-holed concrete Brazilian disc specimens are numerically modelled by a two-dimensional discrete element approach. The cracks initiations, propagations and coalescences in the numerically simulated Brazilian discs (each containing a single cylindrical hole and or multiple holes) are studied. The pre-holed Brazilian discs are numerically tested under Brazilian test conditions. The single-holed Brazilian discs with different ratios of the diameter of the holes to that of the disc radius are modelled first. The breakage load in the ring type disc specimens containing an internal hole with varying diameters is measured and the crack propagation mechanism around the wall of the ring is investigated. The crack propagation and coalescence mechanisms are also studied for the case of multi-holes' concrete Brazilian discs. The numerical and experimental results show that the breaking mechanism of the pre-holed disc specimens is mainly due to the initiation of the radially induced tensile cracks which are growth from the surface of the central hole. Radially cracks propagated toward the direction of diametrical loading. It has been observed that for the case of disc specimens with multiple holes under diametrical compressive loading, the breaking process of the modelled specimens may occur due to the simultaneous cracks propagation and cracks coalescence phenomena. These results also show that as the hole diameter and the number of the holes increases both the failure stress and the crack initiation stress decreases. The experimental results already exist in the literature are quit agree with the proposed numerical simulation results which validates this simulation procedure.
Today, the modeling of concrete as a material within finite element simulations is predominantly done through nonlinear material models of concrete. In current sophisticated computational systems, there are a number of complex concrete material models which are based on theory of plasticity, damage mechanics, linear or nonlinear fracture mechanics or combinations of those theories. These models often include very complex constitutive relations which are suitable for the modeling of practically any continuum mechanics tasks. However, the usability of these models is very often limited by their parameters, whose values must be defined for the proper realization of appropriate constitutive relations. Determination of the material parameter values is very complicated in most material models. This is mainly due to the non-physical nature of most parameters, and also the large number of them that are frequently involved. In such cases, the designer cannot make practical use of the models without having to employ the complex inverse parameter identification process. In continuum mechanics, however, there are also constitutive relations that require the definition of a relatively small number of parameters which are predominantly of a physical nature and which describe the behavior of concrete very well within a particular task. This paper presents an example of such constitutive relations which have the potential for implementation and application in finite element systems. Specifically, constitutive relations for modeling the plane stress state of concrete are presented and subsequently tested and evaluated in this paper. The relations are based on the incremental theory of elastic strain-hardening plasticity in which a non-associated flow rule is used. The calculation result for the case of concrete under uniaxial compression is compared with the experimental data for the purpose of the validation of the constitutive relations used.

Various researches to reduce weight of a vehicle are achieving. One of these researches is tendencious to manufacture the hollow piston rod using friction welding instead of solid one of the vehicle shock absorber. This study deals with the friction welding of SM45C to SM20C-pipe that is used normally in the vehicle shock absorber. The friction time was variable conditions under the conditions of spindle revolution of 2,000rpm, friction pressure of 55MPa, upset pressure of 75MPa, and upset time of 2.0seconds. Under these conditions, the microstructure of weld interface, tensile fracture surface and mechanical tests of friction weld were studied and so the results were as follows. When the friction time was l.5seconds under the conditions, the maximum tensile strength of the friction weld happened to be 837MPa, which is 113% of SM20C's tensile strength and 97% of SM45C's. The optimal welding conditions were n=2,000rpm, $P_1=55MPa$, $P_2=75MPa$, $t_1=1.5sec$, $t_2=2.0sec$ when the total upset length is 1.7mm.
