  • The fracture strength and fracture modes were studied in 3Y-TZP/NiNi bonding which change their interfacial structure with bonding condition. Average 4-point bending strength of 200 MPa to 400 MPa were achieved. The formation of Ti-oxide phase at the interface critically influenced the bonding strength and fracture mode. The fracture surface of Ti-oxide free interface contained multiphase in some case including ZrO2. From the result it was confirmed that in order to maximize the bonding strength crack deflection from interface to ceramic was required.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy of two imaging modes in a cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) system in detecting root fracture in endodontically-treated teeth with fiber posts or screw posts by selecting two fields of view. Materials and Methods: In this study, 78 endodontically-treated single canal premolars were included. A post space was created in all of them. Then the teeth were randomly set in one of 6 artificial dental arches. In 39 of the 78 teeth set in the 6 dental arches, a root fracture was intentionally created. Next, a fiber post and a screw post were cemented into 26 teeth having equal the root fractures. High resolution (HiRes) and standard zoom images were provided by a CBCT device. Upon considering the reconstructed images, two observers in agreement with each other confirmed the presence or absence of root fracture. A McNemar test was used for comparing the results of the two modes. Results: The frequency of making a correct diagnosis using the HiRes zoom imaging mode was 71.8% and in standard zoom was 59%. The overall sensitivity and specificity in diagnosing root fracture in the HiRes mode were 71.79% and 46.15% and in the standard zoom modes were 58.97% and 33.33%, respectively. Conclusion: There were no significant differences between the diagnostic values of the two imaging modes used in the diagnosis of root fracture or in the presence of root canal restorations. In both modes, the most true-positive results were reported in the post space group.

  • Recent clinical studies have shown that computer navigation for total knee arthroplasty (TKA) provides improved component alignment accuracy. However, femoral stress fracture after computernavigated TKA have been reported due to the pin hole and we hypothesized that osteoporosis would be one of the key factors in pin hole fracture after computer-navigated TKA. We investigated the von-Mises stress around the femoral pin-hole for different elastic modulli and ultimate stresses and four different pin penetration modes to understand the aging effect on femoral stress fracture risk after computer-navigated TKA by finite element analysis. In this study, aging effect was shown to increase the femoral stress fracture risk for all pin penetration modes. Especially, aging effect was shown dramatically in the transcortical pin penetration mode.

  • There have been numerous approaches to examine the bonding strengths of solder joints. However, despite the technical and practical limitations, the precedent test methods such as the ball shear and ball pull tests are being used in industrial applications. In this study, the optimum jaw pressure with the modified protrusion jaw was introduced in order to obtain higher successful rate f3r ball pull testing. Furthermore, the pull strengths and fracture modes of Sn-8Zn-3Bi, Sn-4Ag-0.7Cu, and Sn-37Pb eutectic solder after isothermal aging tests ($100^{\circ}C,\;150^{\circ}C$), were evaluated with the protrusion jaw. The pull strength-displacement hysteresis curves and fracture surfaces were carefully investigated to evaluate the correlation between the pull strengths and the fracture modes of each solder. In conclusion, it is verified that Au-Zn IMCs (Intermetallic Compounds) have a detrimental effect on the pull strengths and changed fracture modes of Sn-8Zn-3Bi solder. Meanwhile, the microstructure transformation influences the degradation of pull strengths of Sn-4Ag-0.7Cu and Sn-37Pb solders.

  • PURPOSE. The aim of the study was to evaluate and compare the fracture resistance and modes of fracture of monolithic zirconia crowns with two preparation designs. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Forty human maxillary first premolar teeth were extracted for orthodontic purposes and divided into two main groups (n=20): Group A: monolithic traditional zirconia; Group B: monolithic translucent zirconia. The groups were further subdivided into two subgroups (n=10): (A1, B1) shoulder margin design; (A2, B2) feather-edge margin design. Teeth were prepared with either a 1 mm shoulder margin design or a feather-edge margin design. The prepared teeth were scanned using a digital intraoral scanner. The crowns were cemented using self-adhesive resin cement. All cemented teeth were stored in water for 7 days and thermocycling was done before testing. All samples were subjected to compressive axial loading until fracture. The fractographic analysis was done to assess the modes of fracture of the tested samples. RESULTS. The highest mean values of fracture resistance were recorded in kilo-newton and were in the order of subgroup A1 (2.903); subgroup A2 (2.3); subgroup B1 (1.854) and subgroup B2 (1.523). One-way ANOVA showed a statistically significant difference among the 4 subgroups. Concerning modes of fracture, the majority of samples in subgroups A1 and B1 were fracture of restoration and/or tooth, while in subgroups A2 and B2, the majority of samples fractured through the central fossa. CONCLUSION. Even though all the tested crowns fractured at a higher level than the maximum occlusal forces, the shoulder margin design was better than the feather-edge margin design and the monolithic traditional zirconia was better than the monolithic translucent zirconia in terms of fracture strength.

  • Fracture behaviors of pipes with local wall thinning are very important for the integrity of nuclear power plant. However, effects of local wall thinning on strength and fracture behaviors of piping system were not well studied. Acoustic emission(AE) has been widely used in various fields because of its extreme sensitivity, dynamic detection ability and location of growing defects. In this study, we investigated failure modes of locally wall thinned pipes and AE signals by bending test. From test results, we could be divided four types of failure modes of ovalization, crack initiation after ovalization, local buckling and crack initiation after local buckling. And fracture behaviors such as elastic region, yielding region, plastic deformation region and crack progress region could be evaluated by AE counts, accumulative counts and time-frequency analysis during bending test. The result of the frequency range is expected to be basic data that can inspect plants in real-time.

  • The fracture of a turbine blade of aerospace engine is presented. Although there are a lot of causes and failure modes in blades, the main failure modes are two ways that fracture and fatigue. Degradation of blade material affects most failure modes. Total propagation of failure in this study specifies failure of fracture type. Some section appears fatigue mode. Especially since this study describes analysis of failure for blade in high temperature, it can be a case in point. Analysed blade is Ni super alloy. Investigations of blade are visual inspection, material, microstructure, high temperature stress rupture creep test, analysis and fracture surface, etc. The root cause for fracture was stress rupture due to abnormal thermal environment. Thermal property of Ni super alloy is excellent but if each chemical composition of alloys are different due to change mechanical properties, selection of material is very important.

  • The ob.jective of this study is to determine fracture behaviors(penetrati0n modes) and resistance to penetration duringballistic impact of Al 5052-H34 alloy laminates and anodized Al 5052-H34 alloy laminates. Resistance to penetration is determined by $V_{50}$ ballistic limit, a statical velocity with 50% probability for complete penetration, test method. Fracture behaviors and ballistic tolerance, described by penetration modes, are respectfully observed that result from V50 test and Projectile Through Plates (PTP) test at velocities greater than $V_{50}$. PTP tests were conducted with 0" obliquity at room temperature using 5.56mm ball projectile. $V_{50}$ tests with 0" obliquity at room temperature were conducted with projectiles that were able to achieve near or complete penetration during PTP tests.
