  • Super-duralumin has widely been used as the part materials of aerospace and automobile industry because it has high specific strength and also is light. But, we have little design data about the creep behaviors of the alloy. Therefore, in this study, every creep test under four constant stress conditions have been conducted for four temperature conditions. A series of creep tests had been performed to get the basic design data and life prediction of super-duralurnin products and we have gotten the following results. First, the stress exponents showed the descending trend as the test temperatures increase. Secondly, the creep activation energy gradually decreased as the stresses become bigger. Thirdly, the constant of Larson-Miller parameters on this alloy was estimated about 6. And last, the fractographs at the creep rupture showed both the brittle fracture due to the transgranular rupture.

  • In this research work attempts were made to study the bonding of thermoplastics with adhesives using solar energy. In order to study the curing behaviour necessary experiments were conducted under varying conditions of temperature, exposure time and power. The cured samples were then studied under the optical microscope before subjecting to tensile testing in order to study their mechanical properties. The fracture surfaces were further studied under the Scanning Electron Microscopy in order to study the microstructural changes that are taken place during curing. From the present study it is evident that curing under higher solar energy temperature, generally improves bond strength and quality of the adhesive joints when compared to other modes of curing process expect the microwave curing process.

  • In this study, the effect of hydrogen absorbed in welding process on the fatigue behaviour of the weld bond was quantitatively made clear. The influence of cyclic loading rate on the fatigue characteristics of the manual arc weld bond was inspected under the condition of constant amount of hydrogen. Moreover, the fatigue cracking mechanism concerning the diffusible hydrogen in the welded part was discussed in connection with fractographs of the fracture surfaces.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the characteristics of stress corrosion cracking(SCC) and acoustic emission(AE) signals for the weld HAZ of HT-60 steel under corrosion control in synthetic seawater. Corrosive environment was controlled by potentiostat, and SCC experiment was conducted using a slow strain rate test method at strain rate of 10$^{-5}$ /sec. In order to verify the miroscopic fracture behaviour of the weldment during SCC phenomena, AE test was done simultaneously. Besides, correlationship between mechanical parameters and AE ones was investigated. In case of the parent, reduction of area(ROA) at -0.5V was samller than any other applied voltage such as -0.8V and -1.1V. In addition, reduction of area for the PWHT specimens at -0.8mV was larger than that of the weldment due to the softening effect according to PWHT. In case of the weldment, a lots of events was produced because of the singularities of the weld HAZ compared with the parent.

  • The dynamic crack growth in ductile steel is investigated by means of the impact loaded 3 point bending (3PB) specimens. Results from experiments and numerical simulations are compared to each other. A modified 3PB specimen designed with the reduced width at its ends has been developed in order to avoid the initial compressive loading of the crack tip and also to avoid the uncertain boundary conditions at the impact heads. Numerical simulations of the experiments are made by using a finite element method (FEM) code, ABAQUS. The high speed photography is used to obtain the crack growth and the data of the crack tip opening displacement (CTOD). The direct measurements of the relative rotations of two specimen halves are made by using the Moire interference pattern.

  • The finite element method is employed in conjunction with micromechanical modelling in order to assess the performance of ceramic thermal barrier coatings applied to structural components. The study comprises the conditions of the deposition of the coating by plasma spraying as well as the thermal cycling of the coated component, and it addresses particularly turbine blades. They are exposed to high temperature changes strongly influencing the behaviour of the core material and inducing damage in the ceramic material by intense straining. A concept of failure analysis is discussed starting from distributed microcracking in the ceramic material, progressing to the formation of macroscopic crack patterns and examining their potential for propagation across the coating. The theory is in good agreement with experimental observations, and may therefore be utilized in proposing improvements for a delayed initiation of failure, thus increasing the lifetime of components with ceramic thermal barrier coatings.

  • The main objective of the present paper is to investigate, by means of a boundary value problem permitting a semi-analytic solution, qualitative behaviour of solutions for two pressure-dependent yield criteria used for plastically incompressible polymers. The study mainly focuses on the regime of friction (sticking and sliding). It is shown that the existence of the solution satisfying the regime of sticking depends on other boundary conditions. In particular, there is such a class of boundary conditions depending on the yield criterion adopted that the regime of sliding is required for the existence of the solution independently of the friction law.

  • The powder mixture of Si3N4-AlN-Y2O3, Si3N4-AlN-CeO2 and Si3N4-AlN-Y2O3-CeO2 system was hot-pressed at 175$0^{\circ}C$ for 2h in N2 to prepare $\alpha$-Sialon ceramics. The mechanical property and oxidation behaviour of the prepared $\alpha$-Sialon ceramics were investigated. At 120$0^{\circ}C$, oxidation resistance was best for the Y2O3 added $\alpha$-Sialon ceramics and oxidation rate increased when the amount of CeO2 increased. But when the mixture of Y2O3 and CeO2 added $\alpha$-Sialon ceramics showed a good oxidation resistance. Fracture toughness of (Y2O3+CeO2) added $\alpha$-Sialon ceramics was higher than Y2O3 added $\alpha$-Sialon ceramics.

  • Sintered steels are materials characterized by residual porosity, whose dimension and morphology strongly affect the fatigue crack growth behaviour of the material. Prismatic specimens were pressed at $7.0\;g/cm^3$ from Astaloy CrM powder and sintered varying the sintering temperature and the cooling rate. Optical observations allowed to evaluate the dimensions and the morphology of the porosity and the microstructural characteristics. Fatigue tests were performed to investigate the threshold zone and to calculate the Paris law. Moreover $K_{Ic}$ tests were performed to complete the investigation. Both on fatigue and $K_{Ic}$ samples a fractographic analysis was carried out to investigate the crack path and the fracture surface features. The results show that the Paris law crack growth exponent is around 6.0 for $1120^{\circ}C$ sintered and around 4.7 for $1250^{\circ}C$ sintered materials. The same dependence to process parameters is not found for $K_{Ith}$.

  • To make practical applications of Al-Zn-Mg ternary aluminum alloy effectively in various field, a series of static creep tests under the 16 temperature-stress combination conditions had been performed. The creep tester with constant stress loading was designed and made by the authors and used in this study. The higher the creep temperature rose, the less the stress exponents became. The bigger the applied stresses became, the less values the creep strain activation energy showed. The life prediction constant of Larson-Miller parameter was calculated as about 2.3. In the fractography, the ductile fracture with dimples by intergranular breakage was primarily observed. We can make practical use of these test data in the design, the life prediction and the prevention of the accidents of the thermal facilities, etc.
