In the present contribution, fracture resistance of U-notched GPPS members under mixed mode I/III loading conditions is assessed by using the Averaged Strain Energy Density (ASED) criterion. This criterion has been founded based on the ASED parameter averaged over a well-defined control volume embracing the notch edge. The validation of the theoretical criterion predictions is evaluated through comparing with the results of a series of mixed mode I/III fracture tests conducted on rectangular-shaped GPPS specimens weakened by a single edge U-notch. A recently developed apparatus for mixed mode I/III fracture experiments is employed for measuring the fracture loads of the specimens. The test samples are fabricated with different notch tip radii with the aim of evaluating the influence of this major feature of the U-notched components on the mixed mode I/III fracture behavior. It is shown that the onset of brittle fracture in U-notched GPPS specimens under various combinations of tension and out-of-plane shear can well be predicted by means of the ASED criterion.
The new energy-based criterion, named Reinforcement Strain Energy Density (ReiSED), is proposed to investigate the fracture behavior of the cracked orthotropic materials in which the crack is embedded in the matrix along the fibers. ReiSED is an extension of the well-known minimum strain energy density criterion. The concept of the reinforced isotropic solid as an advantageous model is the basis of the proposed mixed-mode I/II criterion. This model introduces fibers as reinforcements of the isotropic matrix in orthotropic materials. The effects of fibers are qualified by defining reinforcement coefficients at tension and shear modes. These coefficients, called Reduced Stress (ReSt), provide the possibility of encompassing the fiber fraction in a fracture criterion for the first time. Comparing ReiSED fracture limit curve with experimental data proves the high efficiency of this criterion to predict the fracture behavior of orthotropic materials.
For the assessment of fracture behaviors of structural components, various fracture mechanics parameters have been applied to date. New approaches to analyze structural fracture performance under elastic-plastic condition have been proposed by the development of testing methods for characterization of material behavior which is defying to the analysis by conventional fracture parameters. In this study, on the assumption that, initiation of crack propagation of a piping materials occurs when the crack tip strain field reaches "the local fracture strain", following two major issues are discussed ; 1) The relationship between the critical value of J-integral($J_{IC}$) and the local fracture strain (${\varepsilon}_c$) in uniaxial tensile test in the region of maximum reduction area was described. 2) To proved the validity of above relations a series of tests were performed under various temperature and on the different piping materials.materials.
In the present work, the ductile fracture behaviors of ultra-high strength steel sheets along the different loading directions are investigated under various loading paths. Three loading paths, i.e., in-plane shear, uniaxial tension, plane strain tension deformations, are considered, and the corresponding specimens are described. The experiments are conducted using the digital image correlation (DIC) system to analyze the strain at the onset of the fracture. The experimental results show that the loading path for each specimen sample is linear, and different values of the fracture strains for the loading direction from the plane strain tension are observed. The ductile fracture model of the modified Mohr-Coulomb (MMC) is constructed based on the experimental data and evaluated along the rolling direction and transverse direction under various loading paths.
The plastic zone formed around a notch tip is important in analyzing the fracture toughness of structures and particularly weld cracks existed in the weld HAZ (heat affected zone) which produces local plastic deformation at the crack tip. Therefore, in order to analyze the fracture toughness in weld HAZ, it is necessary to investigate the new fracture toughness parameter $K_{c}$$^{*}$ and critical plastic strain energy $W_{p}$$^{c}$ according to the shape and size of the plastic zone. 1) If the temperature corresponding to $K_{c}$$^{*}$=130kg-m $m^{-3}$ 2/ is determined, transition temperature $T_{tr}$ the magnitude of plastic zone size, and heat input change depending on the fracture toughness. The blunted amounts of the parent and weld HAZ show mild linear variation until .delta.=0.4mm and then increase very steeply there after. 2) The relation between the plastic strain energy( $W^{p}$ ) and transition temperature( $T_{*}$tr) in parent metal is more sensitive than that of weld HAZ. However, the plastic strain energy depends on the transition temperature, and thus the yield stress, .sigma.$_{ys}$ becomes an important parameter for plastic strain energy. 3) The critical plastic strain energy( $W_{p}$$^{c}$ ) absorbed by the plastic zone at the notch tip indicated in case of parent metal: 60J/mm, in case of heat input(20KJ/cm): 75J/mm, in case of heat input(30KJ/cm); 50J/mmJ/mm.
Longitudinal fracture behavior of non-linear elastic beam configurations is studied in terms of the strain energy release rate. It is assumed that the beams exhibit continuous material inhomogeneity along the width as well as along the height of the crosssection. The Ramberg-Osgood stress-strain relation is used for describing the non-linear mechanical behavior of the inhomogeneous material. A solution to strain energy release rate is derived that holds for inhomogeneous beams of arbitrary cross-section under combination of axial force and bending moments. Besides, the solution may be applied at any law of continuous distribution of the modulus of elasticity in the beam cross-section. The longitudinal crack may be located arbitrary along the beam height. The solution is used to investigate a longitudinal crack in a beam configuration of rectangular cross-section under four-point bending. The crack is located symmetrically with respect to the beam mid-span. It is assumed that the modulus of elasticity varies continuously according a cosine law in the beam cross-section. The longitudinal fracture behavior of the inhomogeneous beam is studied also by applying the J-integral approach for verification of the non-linear solution to the strain energy release rate derived in the present paper. Effects of material inhomogeneity, crack location along the beam height and non-linear mechanical behavior of the material on the longitudinal fracture behavior are evaluated. Thus, the solution derived in the present paper can be used in engineering design of inhomogeneous non-linear elastic structural members to assess the influence of various material and geometrical parameters on longitudinal fracture.
Accidental events such as collisions, groundings, and hydrocarbon explosions in marine structures can cause catastrophic damage. Thus, it is extremely important to predict the extent of such damage, which determines the total amount of oil spills and the residual hull girder strength. Punching fracture tests were conducted by Choung (2009b), where various sizes of indenters and circular unstiffened steel plates with different thicknesses were used to quasi-statically realize damage extents. A three-dimensional fracture strain surface was developed based on a reference (Choung et al., 2015b), where the average stress triaxiality and average normalized Lode angle were used as the parameters governing the fracture of ductile steels. In this study, new numerical analyses were performed using very fine axisymmetric elements in combination with an Abaqus user-subroutine to implement the three-dimensional fracture strain surface. Conventional numerical analyses were also conducted for the tests to identify the best fit fracture strain values by changing the fracture strains. Based on the phenomenon of the average normalized Lode angle starting out positive and then becoming slightly negative, it was inferred that the shear stress primarily dominates in determining the fractures locations, with a partial contribution from the compressive stress. It should be stated that the three-dimensional fracture surface effectively predicted at least the shear stress-dominant fracture behavior of a mild steel.
The dislocation density in strain-hardened Alloy 690 was analyzed using scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) to study the relationship between the local plastic strain and susceptibility to primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC) in nuclear power plants. The test material was cold-rolled at various thickness reduction ratios from 10% to 40% to simulate the strain-hardening condition of plant components. The dislocation densities were measured at grain boundaries (GB) and in grain interiors of strain-hardened specimens from STEM images. The dislocation density in the grain interior monotonically increased as the strain-hardening proceeded, while the dislocation density at the GB increased with strain-hardening up to 20% but slightly decreases upon further deformation to 40%. The decreased dislocation density at the GB was attributed to the formation of deformation twins. After the PWSCC growth test of strain-hardened Alloy 690, the fraction of intergranular (IG) fracture was obtained from fractography. In contrast to the change in the dislocation density with strain-hardening, the fraction of IG fracture increased remarkably when strain-hardened over 20%. From the results, it was suggested that the PWSCC growth behavior of strain-hardened Alloy 690 not only depends on the dislocation density, but also on the microstructural defects at the GB.

FRP re-bar in concrete structures could be used as a substitute of steel re-bars for that cases in which aggressive environment produce high steel corrosion, or lightweight is an important design factor, or transportation cost increase significantly with the weight of the materials. But FRP fibers have only linearly elastic stress-strain behavior; whereas, steel re-bar has linear elastic behavior up to the yield point followed by large plastic deformation and strain hardening. Thus, the current FRP re-bars are not suitable concrete reinforcement where a large amount of plastic deformation prior to collapse is required. The main objectives of this study in to evaluate the tensile behavior and the fracture mode of hybrid FRP re-bar. Fracture mode of hybrid FRP re-bar is unique. The only feature common to the failure of the hybrid FRP re-bars and the composite is the random fiber fracture and multilevel fracture of sleeve fibers, and the resin laceration behavior in both the sleeve and the core areas. Also, the result of the tensile and interlaminar shear stress test results of hybrid FRP re-bar can provide its excellent tensile strength-strain and interlaminar stress-strain behavior.

In this study, the classical J2 flow theory is explicitly proved to be inappropriate to describe the plastic behaviour of structural steels under different stress states according to the reported test results. A numerical framework of the characterization of the strain hardening and ductile fracture initiation involving the effect of stress states, i.e., stress triaxiality and Lode angle parameter, is proposed based on the mechanical response of structural steels under monotonic loading. Both effects on strain hardening are determined by correction functions, which are implemented as different modules in the numerical framework. Thus, other users can easily modify them according to their test results. Besides, the ductile fracture initiation is determined by a fracture locus in the space of stress triaxiality, Lode angle parameter, and fracture strain. The numerical implementation of the proposed model and the corresponding code are provided in this paper, which are also available on GitHub. The validity of the numerical procedure is examined through single element tests and the accuracy of the proposed model is verified by existing test results.
