Furniture design is no exception to human desire for pursuit of the nature. In various design fields, it has turned out nature-decorative method in the past, and also recently it has turned out bio-adaptive method which is more root design process using principal of generation in nature world. The purpose of this study is to analyze application methods and characteristics of fractal geometry and voronoi diagram which are most representative principals of generative design in nature by research on the example of furniture design using these principals. The results of having analyzed fumitures by generative design can be summarized as follows; design principals of fractal; superposition, scaling, repetition & gradation, deformation, distortion and voronoi diagram; individual speciation, variational patten, repetition gradation, ambiguous boundary create new design concept and emergent form in furniture design. Application methods are 'form emergence by algorithm', 'conventional process based on principals of generative design', and 'reproduction of pattern from generative design'. Biological reinterpretations and new explorations of principals of nature generation offer unbounded possibilities for furniture design.

The shape of surface micro-crack is very irregular due to nonhomogeneous microstructure but is very important in respect to qualitative estimation of fatigue life. Fractal geomety can quantify the shape of surface mciro-crack. Fractal dimension is measured for surface micro-cracks with coast line and box counting method and estimates cycle ration in Al 2024-T3. The average fractal dimension $D_{favg}$ of surface micro-cracks has 3-parameter weibull distribution and location parameter is nearly constant but shape parameter decreases as cycle ration increases. The fractal dimension by coast line method is measured for individual surface micro-crack but the fractal dimension by box countin method is measured for all the surface micro-cracks under sampling area. Therefore, This paper shows fractal dimension $D_{fb}$ can predict cycle ratio $N/N_f$ more convenient than fractal dimension $D_{favg}$.
Fractal antenna arrays are geometry-based thinned arrays having multiband applications. The major challenge of these arrays is their large number of elements at higher expansion factors. This article presents the thinning of fractal antenna arrays while maintaining an appropriate balance between the side lobe level and beam width by using various quantized fractal distribution functions. A 2D square fractal antenna array and 3DSierpinski gasket antenna array are considered in this article to validate the proposed distribution functions. Nearly one third of the antenna elements are thinned in each successive iteration except in the case of a one-count distribution function. The proposed technique can simplify practical implementation and exhibits better performance for various parameters such as the side lobe level, side lobe angle, and half power beam width than fully populated fractal antenna arrays.

To analyze the dynamic acceleration characteristics, it is necessary to identify the acceleration model using some methods that can represent the dynamic properties well. In this sense, fractal methods were used for the verification of characteristics of an acceleration signal. To estimate and analyze the geometry of acceleration signal, a fractal interpolation and its analysis was introduced in this paper. The chaotic nature of acceleration signal was considered in fractal modeling. In this study the fractal signal modeling has brought a focus within the scope of the fractal interpolation and fractal dimension. And a new idea of fractal dimension has been introduced and discussed considering the damping ratio and amplitude for its dynamic properties of the signal. The fractal dimension of acceleration with respect to the scaling factor using fixed data points of 1000 points was calculated and discussed. The acceleration behaviors of this results show some different characteristics. And this fractal analysis can be applied to other signal analysis of several machining such as pendulum type grinding and milling which has many dynamic properties in the signal.
Recent developments in fractal theory suggest that fractal may provide a more realistic representation of characteristics of cementitious materials. In this paper, the roughness of fracture surfaces in cementitious material has been characterized by fractal theory. A systematic experimental investigation was carried out to examine the dependency of fracture parameters on the aggregate sizes as well as the loading rates. Three maximum aggregate sizes (4.76 mm, 12.7 mm, and 19.1 mm) and two loading rates (slow and fast loading rate) were used. A total of 25 compression tests and 25 tension tests were performed. All fracture parameters exhibited an increase, to varying degrees, when aggregates were added to the mortar matrix. The fracture surfaces of the specimens were digitized and analyzed. Results of the fractal analysis suggested that concrete fracture surfaces exhibit fractal characteristics, and the fractal geometry provide a useful tool for characterizing nonlinear fracture behavior of concrete. Fractal dimension D was monotonically increased as maximum aggregate sizes increase. A new fractal fracture model was developed which considers the size and shape of aggregate, and the crack paths in the constituent phases. Detailed analyses were given for four different types of fracture paths. The fractal fracture model can estimate fractal dimension for multiphase composites.
The purpose of this study is to propose cognitive ecological effects of fractal patterns in space design. This study investigated the perception and cognition problems regarding landscape patterns showing fractal properties from the cognitive perspective instead of the traditional speculative approach. In particular, the researcher has verified that fractal geometry theory and fractal pattern concept provide insight in space aesthetic values and cognitive effects. Research results are as follows. First, most environmentally-friendly fractal urban forms provide cognitive connectivity. In particular, this space provides a positive emotional response and preference to humans and displays self-organized complexity. This study found that such complexity of space form has characteristics corresponding to parallel cognitive structures of the human brain. Simultaneously, the researcher suggests that the fractal landscape pattern is an alternative for stiff and homogenized modern space. Second, fractal patterns provide hierarchical connectivity within the brain through continuous difference and repetition. In particular, self-similarities of fractal patterns administer significant visual grouping and coherence in human perception. It can be determined whether scaling coherence facilitates easier organization in cognitive organization. Third, fractal patterns in space design provide the basic method for achieving the connection between concept, construction, and urban factors. As a result, the researcher has suggested that scale distribution of geometrical factors, such as fractal patterns, an be a design method to connect various space typologies.

A microstrip patch antenna with circular polarization based on the Sierpinski fractal geometry is proposed. The Sierpinski fractal is composed of 3 equilaterial triangular patch and is easy to produce a circular polarization by sequentially rotation techniques. The characteristics of a 1x3 antenna array from Sierpinski geometry are investigated, i.e. port isolation and AR(axial Ratio).

The morphology of the passivated surface of stainless steel (SS) was quantitatively characterized based on fractal geometry. In particular, the surface irregularities of the passivated 304 and 439 SSs were comparatively analyzed in terms of their self-similar fractal dimensions. The passivated surface of 439 SS in an acid-based electrolyte proved to have a higher fractal dimension, as compared to that of 304 SS, esp. at a scale of several tens of nanometers, strongly indicating the higher irregularity of the passivated surface. It is anticipated that the fractal approach suggested herein might be effectively utilized to analyze the irregularity of the steel surface and/or the compactness of the oxide film.

Fractal property of the passivated steel surface was investigated on the basis of scaling analysis with a special focus on its relationship with corrosion resistance. For this purpose, the surface of stainless steel was intentionally oxidized under a variety of passivation conditions and its scaling property was analyzed by a triangulation method. The morphology of the passivated steel surface was satisfactorily evaluated with fractal dimension. From the chronoamperometry and impedance measurement, it proved that lower fractal dimension leads to more enhanced corrosion resistance. The higher passivity of the steel surface with lower fractal dimension was discussed in terms of active area and structural imperfection.

Numerous studies suggested that fish assemblage structure reflects the status of stream ecosystems. The status of streams integrity, including various trophic levels, water quality and habitat degradation, can be assessed by fish assemblages. In this study, we investigated the relationships between fish assemblages and streamline geometry of streams. Previous studies suggested that geomorphologic parameter can be a critical factor of permeability between adjacent two systems. From a landscape ecological perspective, edges may partially control the flow rate of energy between two adjacent systems. Thus, the Streamline geometry can be a geomorphologic parameter that exhibits the integrity of stream. We selected the Nakdong river for study areas, which is one of major rivers and the longest (525 km) River in South Korea. We used the revised IBI representing overall ecological characteristics of Korean fish assemblages and eight sub-assessment criteria of IBI, collected from 82 sampling sites in the Nakdong River. For calculating the Streamline geometry, we measured fractal dimension index that generally used in biology, ecology and landscape ecology. We used the digital land-use/land-cover map and generated a 1-km buffer for each sampling site and refined the shape of the Streamlines. Pearson correlation analyses were performed between Streamline geometry and IBI and sub-assessment criteria of IBI. The results show that IBI and eight sub-assessments of fish are significantly correlated with geometry of Streamline. The fractal dimension of Streamline geometry were related with IBI (r = 0.48) and six sub-assessments of IBI, including total number of native fish and native species, the number of riffle benthic species, sensitive species, tolerant species and native insectivore. Especially, the number of tolerant species(r = -0.52) and native insectivore(r = 0.52) show strong correlation with geometry of Streamline. These results indicate that lower Streamline geometry can result in poor fish assemblages, while higher geometry of Streamline can enhance fish assemblages by potentially supplying insects and better habitat conditions. We expect the results of our study to be useful for stream restoration and management. However, we see the necessity of study investigating the mechanisms how Streamline geometry affect fish assemblages.
