  • Two-way relaying is an effective way of improving system spectral efficiency by making use of physical layer network coding. However, energy efficiency in OFDM-based bidirectional relaying with asymmetric traffic requirement has not been investigated. In this study, we focused on subcarrier transmission mode selection, bit loading, and power allocation in a multicarrier single amplified-and-forward relay system. In this scheme, each subcarrier can operate in two transmission modes: one-way relaying and two-way relaying. The problem is formulated as a mixed integer programming problem. We adopt a structural approximation optimization method that first decouples the original problem into two suboptimal problems with fixed subcarrier subsets and then finds the optimal subcarrier assignment subsets. Although the suboptimal problems are nonconvex, the results obtained for a single-tone system are used to transform them to convex problems. To find the optimal subcarrier assignment subsets, an iterative algorithm based on subcarrier ranking and matching is developed. Simulation results show that the proposed method can improve system performance compared with conventional methods. Some interesting insights are also obtained via simulation.

  • In asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks, fixed length cells of 53 bytes are transmitted. A cell may be discarded during transmission due to buffer overflow or a detection of errors. Cell discarding seriously degrades transmission quality. The quality degradation can be reduced by employing efficient forward error control (FEC) to recover discarded cells. In this paper, we present the design and implementation of decoding equipment for FEC in ATM networks based on a single parity check (SPC) product code using very-large-scale integration (VLSI) technology. FEC allows the destination to reconstruct missing data cells by using redundant parity cells that the source adds to each block of data cells. The functionality of the design has been tested using the Model Sim 5.7cXE Simulation Package. The design has been implemented for a $5{\times}5$ matrix of data cells in a Virtex-E XCV 3200E FG1156 device. The simulation and synthesis results show that the decoding function can be completed in 81 clock cycles with an optimum clock of 56.8 MHz. A test bench was written to study the performance of the decoder, and the results are presented.

  • In this paper, we introduce a real-time state-of-polarization(SOP) finding system. The system divides the optical wave into linear horizontal- and vertical-SOP components and measures two different beat-signals, which are produced by superposition with reference optical source, in time domain. From these measured beat signals we can get SOP information of the signal instantly. Since the proposed scheme is a feed-forward measurement system, comparing with conventional systems which require an optical feedback loop, the measurement time becomes reduced tremendously. We also introduced a novel calibration method for compensating birefringence-related errors which may occur during the measurement. We prove the operation and performance of the proposed system through computer simulation and actual experiments.

  • We study relay selection in decode-and-forward (DF)-based relay networks consisting of a source, a destination, an eavesdropper, and multiple relays, where each terminal has a single antenna and operates in a half-duplex mode. In these networks, it is desirable to protect the confidential message from the source to the destination against the eavesdropper with the help of a single selected relay. Specifically, we begin by investigating DF-based networks for the scenario instantaneous signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) related to the eavesdropper are available. For the scenario, we propose relay selection to maximize the secrecy rate of DF-based networks with and without direct-paths, and we derive the exact secrecy outage probabilities in closed-form.

  • Multiple output converters (MOCs) are widely used for applications which require various kinds of the output voltages due to its advantages in cost, volume, and efficiency. However, most of the MOCs developed so far can regulate only one output tightly and require as many secondary windings in the transformer as the number of the outputs. In this paper, a novel Time Division Multiple Control (TDMC) method to regulate all the outputs in high precision is proposed and applied to the double ended forward converter for the multiple battery charger. Additional benefit of the proposed topology is to require only one secondary winding in the transformer for all the outputs. The proposed converter can charge two different kinds of batteries or same kind of batteries in different state of charges (SOCs) by CC/CV mode independently with the even degree of tight regulation, thereby satisfying the ripple requirements for each battery.

  • This paper compared to the operation performance and efficiency of an interleaved active clap ZVS forward converter and an interleaved ZVS half-bridge converter in distributed power system. The design for the current-mode control circuit of an interleaved active clamp ZVS forward converter is presented. To simplify the gate drive circuits, N-P MOSFETs coupled active clamp method is proposed. An efficiency about 90% for the 50∼100% load range is achieved.

  • The optical fibers are an interesting medium for effective tunable optical frequency conversion in the spectral range of UV, Visible, and near-IR through the nonlinear processes. A number of papers for developing the wideband and flat-gain amplifier for the WDM system applications through the combination of EDFA or thulium-doped fluoride fiber amplifier and Raman amplifier, are reported$^{(1)}$ . Even though a variety of papers related to Raman amplifications are published, the amplification with the feedback of the residual pump is not investigated yet. Accordingly, in this paper, we report the characteristics of forward Raman amplification by the simple and double-pass fiber Raman configuration through the feedback of residual pump beam. (omitted)

  • In this research TPS (Train Performance Simulation) blocks are designed using Simulink and applied to generate speed profiles for energy-efficient train operation. With a train operation mode of maximum powering, coasting, and maximum breaking, a breaking point is calculated from forward-backward running profiles. Then, GA (Genetic Algorithm) is used to solve a running time constraint, and a coasting point is produced from the searching process of GA. With the breaking point and the coasting point a speed profile is plotted. Train performance under a speed limit and gradient variations is simulated and resultant speed profiles are analyzed.

  • The forward planar transformer, which had power capacity of 300 W, input voltage of 220 V, output voltage of 15 V, and switching frequency of 300 KHz, was designed and manufactured by using the planar core with large effective area and the flat copper leadframes for miniaturization and high efficiency of the switching mode power supply (SMPS). As well as, a forward converter equipped with the above mentioned planar transformer was manufactured and electromagnetic characteristics were investigated. The numerical value of turns for 1st and 2nd winding were 15 and 2 respectively The self inductance of 1st winding was 1.592 mH, very low leakage inductance of 2.7 $\mu$H, and the coupling factor of 0.928 were obtained at switching frequency of 300 KHz. The high efficiency of 88.62 % for the SMPS equipped with planar transformer was obtained at power capacity of 300 W.

  • In this research work, the analytical rotating vibration for functionally graded shell with ring supports are restricted to some volume fraction laws based on Rayleigh-Ritz technique. The frequencies of functionally grade cylindrical shells have been investigated for the distribution of material composition of material with two kinds of material. Stability of a cylindrical shell depends highly on these aspects of material with ring supports. The frequency behavior is investigated with fraction laws versus circumferential wave number, length-to-radius and height-to-radius ratios. The frequencies are higher for higher values of circumferential wave number. The frequency first increases and gain maximum value with the increase of circumferential wave mode. Moreover, the effect of angular speed is also investigated. It is examined that the backward and forward frequencies increases and decreases on increasing the ratio of height- and length-to-radius ratios.
