  • In designing distributed databases, DAP(Data Allocation Problem) is one of the key design issues. Because, however, most of previous researches on DAP have considered only cost aspect, they cannot increase the performance and availability and they are not proper to the system requiring high-availability or real-time processing. Therefore, we need a more formal data allocation model considering multiple aspects. In this paper, we propose the MAPN (Multiple Aspects Petri Net) modeling method for the distributed transaction modeling. The MAPN model, an extended classical petri net, is proposed for the formal modeling considering multiple aspects (cost, performance and availability) concurrently. We demonstrate that we can compose the valid DAP evaluation model considering not only cost but also performance and availability concurrently by using the MAPN structure and MAPN graph.

  • The Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) provides standardized product models for the building construction domain. However, the current IFC schema has limited representation for infrastructure. Several studies have examined the data schema for road and highway modeling, but not in a sufficiently comprehensive and robust manner to facilitate the overall integrated project delivery of road projects. Several discussions have focused on slope engineering for road projects, but no solution has been provided regarding the formalized parametric modeling up to now. Iterative design, analysis, and modification are observed during the process of slope design for road projects. The practitioners need to carry out the stability analysis to consider different road design alternatives, including horizontal, vertical, and cross-section designs. The procedure is neither formalized nor automated. Thus, there is a need to develop the formal representation of the product and process of slope analysis for road design. The objective of this research is to develop a formal representation (i.e., an IFC extension data schema) for slope analysis. It consists of comprehensive information required for slope analysis in a structured manner. The deliverable of this study contributes to both the formal representation of infrastructure development and, further, the automated process of slope design for road projects.

  • Treating genomes just as languages raises the possibility of producing concise generalizations about information in biological sequences. Grammars used in this way would constitute a model of underlying biological processes or structures, and that grammars may, in fact, serve as an appropriate tool for theory formation. The increasing number of biological sequences that have been yielded further highlights a growing need for developing grammatical systems in bioinformatics. The intent of this review is therefore to list some bibliographic references regarding the recent progresses in the field of grammatical modeling of biological sequences. This review will also contain some sections to briefly introduce basic knowledge about formal language theory, such as the Chomsky hierarchy, for non-experts in computational linguistics, and to provide some helpful pointers to start a deeper investigation into this field.

  • Modeling and simulation of human-involved complex systems pose challenges to representing human decision makings into logical systems because of the nondeterministic and dynamic nature of human behaviors. In modeling perspectives, human's activities in systems can increase uncertainty and complexity, because he or she can potentially access all other resources within the system and change the system states. To address all of these human involvements in the system, this research suggests applying the Finite State Automata (FSA)-based formal modeling of human-involved systems that incorporates the ecological concept of affordances to an evacuation simulation, so that human behavioral patterns under urgent and dynamic emergency situations can be considered in the real-time simulation. The proposed simulation methodologies were interpreted using the warehouse fire evacuation simulation to clarify the applicability of the proposed methodology. This research is expected to merge system engineering technologies and human factors, and come out to the new predictive modeling methodology for disaster simulations. This research can be applied to a variety of applications such as building layout designs and building access control systems for emergency situations.

  • Hybrid system is a dynamic system that is composed of both a continuous and discrete system, suitable for automobile, avionic and defense systems. Various modeling languages and their supporting tools have been proposed and used in the hybrid system. The languages and tools have specific characteristics for their purpose. Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) proposed a hybrid system modeling language, ECML (ETRI CPS Modeling Language). ECML extends DEV&DESS (Differential Event and Differential Equation Specified System) formalism with consideration of CPS (Cyber-Physical System), which supports modeling and simulation. In this paper, we introduce ECML and suggest a formal definition. The case study specifies a simple vehicle model using the suggested formal definition.

  • Presented in this paper is a systematic approach to "modeling and simulation' of flow lines in mass production systems, using a tire trimming line as an example. The "modeling phase" consists of 1) generation of alternative line configurations, 2) construction of a reference model for each alternative, and 3) formal description of the target system. ACD(Activity Cycle Diagrams) are employed as a tool for formal description. In the "simulation phase'. block diagram models (provided by the simulation language SIMAN) and the next event methodology(implemented in FORTRAN 77) are combined in order to fully describe the flow line behavior.

  • The ebXML (Electronic Business using eXtensible Markup Language) Specification Schema is to provide nominal set of specification elements necessary to specify a collaboration between business partners based on XML. As a part of ebXML Specification Schema, BPSS (Business Process Specification Schema) has been provided to support the direct specification of the set of elements required to configure a runtime system in order to execute a set of ebXML business transactions. The BPSS is available in two stand-alone representations, a UML version and an XML version. Due to the limitations of UML notations and XML syntax, however, current ebXML BPSS specification is insufficient to specify formal semantic constraints of modeling elements completely. In this study, we propose a classification schema for the BPSS semantic constraints and describe how to represent those semantic constraints formally using OCL (Object Constraint Language). As a way to verify a Business Process Specification (BPS) with the formal semantic constraint modeling, we suggest a rule-based approach to represent the formal constraints and to use the rule-based constraints specification to verify BPSs in a CLIPS prototype implementation.
