  • Objectives: This study was conducted to determine firefighters' work-related accident rate and investigate the factors affecting their on-site safety. Methods: We developed a web-based self-reported questionnaire designed to inquire into firefighters' work-related accident experience and the factors (4M; Man, Machine, Media, Management) affecting firefighters' on-site safety. We distributed questionnaires to all members of firefighting organizations in South Korea by e-mail and 9,149 were returned, resulting in a response rate of 23.1%. Results: Fifteen point seven percent of the respondents reported work-related injuries within the past one year, and 35.1% answered that current accident investigation reports are not helpful for preventing the same accident from recurring. Among the 4M factors, the one most affecting firefighters' on-site safety in the order of priority is the Man factor, followed by Machine, Media, and Management. However, the results from detailed sub-categorical factors showed some differences. 'Lack of human resources', one of the Management factors, was the most influential (70.3%), followed by 'worn-out equipment' under the Machine factor (67.2%). The viewpoint of elements of the Man factor including 'forgetting instructions' and 'fatigue and illness' were significantly different according to firefighters' rank. The higher the firefighter's rank, the more they answered 'forgetting instructions,' while the opposite was the case for 'fatigue and disease'. Conclusions: The present firefighters' accident investigation report needs to be improved, and the 4M method could prove very useful. In addition, it is necessary to set up a proper firefighters' accident investigation and prevention system.

  • This paper describes an acoustic communication receiver structure, which is designed for QPSK (Quadrature Phase Shift Keying) signal with 25 kHz carrier frequency and 5 kHz symbol rate, and takes samples from received signal at 100 kHz sampling rate. Based on the described receiver structure, optimum design parameters, such as number of taps of FF (Feed-Forward) and FB (Feed-Back) filters and forgetting factor of RLS (Recursive Least-Square) algorithm, of joint equalizer are determined to minimize the BER (Bit Error Rate) performance of the joint equalizer output symbols when the acquisition data in shallow water using implemented acoustic transducers is decimated at a rate of 2:1 and then enforced to the input of receiver. The transmission distances are 1.4 km, 2.9 km, and 4.7 km. Analysis results show that the optimum number of taps of FF and FB filters are different according to the distance between source and destination, but the optimum or near optimum value of forgetting factor is 0.997. Therefore, we can reach a conclusion that the proper receiver structure could change the number of taps of FF and FB filters with the fixed forgetting factor 0.997 according to the transmission distance. Another analysis result is that there are an acceptable performance degradation when the 16-tap-length simple filter is used as a low-pass filter of receiver instead of 161-tap-length matched filter.

  • In this paper, a minimum variance control system is proposed and practically implemented, which is adequate to the induction motor speed control system with frequent load variation. Minimum variance control method is used as a control law and recursive least square method with selective forgetting factor is proposed and analyzed with general forgetting algorithm as an estimation method. Designed control system is based on PC-DSP structure for the purposed of easiness of applying adaptive algorithm. Through computer simulation and experimental results, it is verified that proposed control system is robust to the load variation and practical implementation is possible.

  • This paper presents an extended integral control with the PI controller by introducing the delay and decaying factors. The extended integral control scheme is developed by substituting the proportional convolution integral control for the PI(Proportional Integral) control. So far, the integral part of PI controller produces a signal that is proportional to the time integral of the input signal to the controller. The steady-state operation points are affected forever by errors in the past due to the input signal containing the information of the error in the past. These phenomena may cause some disturbances for other control purposes related to the given PI control. Introduction of forgetting factors to the error in the past can resolve the disturbance problems. Various forgetting factors are developed using the delay elements, the decaying factors, and the combination of the delay and decaying factors. The proposed various extended integral control schemes can be applicable to the corresponding PI control designs in which the error in the past may badly affect the current steady-state operation points and may cause some disturbances for other control purposes.

  • This paper presents a phase portrait analysis-based safety control algorithm for excavators, using adaptive sliding mode control. Since working postures and material types cause the excavator's rotational inertia to vary, the rotational inertia was estimated, and this estimation was used to design an adaptive sliding mode controller for collision avoidance of the excavator. In order to estimate the rotational inertia, the recursive least-squares estimation with multiple forgetting was applied with the information of the swing velocity of the excavator. For realistic evaluation, an actual working scenario-based performance evaluation was conducted. Based on the estimated rotational inertia and an analysis of estimation errors, sliding mode control inputs were computed. The actual working scenario-based performance evaluation of the designed safety algorithm was conducted, and the results showed that the developed safety control algorithm can efficiently avoid a collision with an object in consideration of rotational inertia variations.

  • A robust nonlinear predictive control strategy using a disturbance estimator is presented. The disturbance estimator is comprised of two parts: one is the disturbance model parameter adaptation and the other is future disturbance prediction. RLSM(recurrsive least square method) with a forgetting factor is used to de the uncertain distance model parameters and for the future disturbance prediction, future process outputs and inputs projected by the process model are used. The simulation results for chemical reactors indicate that a substantial improvement in nonlinear predictive control performance is possible using the disturbance estimator.

  • This paper presents an indirect adaptive control scheme for discrete linear systems whose parameters are not necessrily slowly varying. It is assumed that system parameters are modelled as linear combinations of known bounded functions with unknown constant coefficients. Unknown coefficients are estimated using a recursive least squares algorithm with a dead zone and a forgetting factor. A control law which makes the estimated model exponentially stable is constructed. With this control law and a state observer, all based on the parameter estimates, it is shown that the resulting closed-loop system is globally stable and robust to bounded external disturbances and small unmodelled plant uncertainties.

  • In this paper, passive telemetry capacitive humidity sensor system using a RLSE(Recursive Least Square Estimation) technique is proposed. To overcome the problem like power limits and complications that general passive telemetry sensor system including IC chip has, the principle of inductive coupling is applied to model the sensor system. Specially. by applying the forgetting factor we show that the accuracy of its estimation can be improved even in the case of time varying parameter and also the convergence time can be reduced.
