Risk Assessment of Growth Hormones and Antimicrobial Residues in Meat

  • Growth promoters including hormonal substances and antibiotics are used legally and illegally in food producing animals for the growth promotion of livestock animals. Hormonal substances still under debate in terms of their human health impacts are estradiol-$17\beta$, progesterone, testosterone, zeranol, trenbolone, and melengestrol acetate (MGA). Many of the risk assessment results of natural steroid hormones have presented negligible impacts when they are used under good veterinary practices. For synthetic hormonelike substances, ADIs and MRLs have been established for food safety along with the approval of animal treatment. Small amounts of antibiotics added to feedstuff present growth promotion effects via the prevention of infectious diseases at doses lower than therapeutic dose. The induction of antimicrobial resistant bacteria and the disruption of normal human intestinal flora are major concerns in terms of human health impact. Regulatory guidance such as ADIs and MRLs fully reflect the impact on human gastrointestinal microflora. However, before deciding on any risk management options, risk assessments of antimicrobial resistance require large-scale evidence regarding the relationship between antimicrobial use in food-producing animals and the occurrence of antimicrobial resistance in human pathogens. In this article, the risk profiles of hormonal and antibacterial growth promoters are provided based on recent toxicity and human exposure information, and recommendations for risk management to prevent human health impacts by the use of growth promoters are also presented.

Determinate the Number of Growth Rings Using Resistograph with Tree-Ring Chronology to Investigate Ages of Big Old Trees

  • To verify the possibility of using resistograph to estimate the age of big old living trees, we selected three Zelkova serrata and seven Pinus densiflora in Goesan. The mean diameters at breast height of Z. serrata and P. densiflora were 102 (92-116) cm and 80 (65-110) cm, respectively. The heights measured from the ground using a resistograph ranged at 1.2-4.3 m and 0.6-1.1 m for Z. serrata and P. Densiflora, respectively. The most appropriate needle speed to determine tree-ring boundaries for measuring ring width was 1500 r/min for both tree species. Alternatively, the suitable feed speeds for Z. serrata and P. densiflora were 50 cm/min and 150 cm/min, respectively. From the measured data, the mean numbers of tree rings of Z. serrata and P. densiflora were 57 (43-68) and 104 (93-124), respectively, and the mean tree-ring widths were 4.27 mm (3.18-5.09 mm) and 2.93 mm (2.32-3.34 mm), respectively. A comparison between the time series of tree-ring widths by resistograph and that from the local master chronologies tallied for the heartwood part. Finally, this study showed that resistograph can be used to estimate tree ages when a local master chronology is available.

Current status of global dairy goat production: an overview

  • The global goat population continues to grow and is now over one billion. The number of goats raised primarily for milk production is also growing, due to expanding demand. Most of the world dairy goat production and consumption is in Asia, but a global view of the dairy goat sector reveals important lessons about building successful modern dairy goat industries. The most organized market for goat milk is found in Europe, especially in France. The European goat sector is specialized for milk production, mostly for industrial cheesemaking, while also supporting traditional on-farm manufacturing. Government involvement is significant in sanitary regulation, research, extension, support for local producer organizations, and markets, and ensures safety and quality. Nonetheless, producers are still vulnerable to market fluctuations. New dairy goat industries are developing in countries without a long goat milk tradition, such as China, the United States, and New Zealand, due to rising consumer demand, strong prices, and climate change. The mix of policies, management and markets varies widely, but regardless of the country, the dairy goat sector thrives when producers have access to markets, and the tools and skills to sustainably manage their livestock and natural resources. These are most readily achieved through strong and inclusive producer organizations, access to technical services, and policies that enable the poor and marginalized groups to benefit from increasing demand.

Studies on CFST column to steel beam joints using endplates and long bolts under central column removal

  • In this paper, four specimens of CFST column joints with endplates and long bolts are tested in the scenario of progressive collapse. Flush endplate and extended endplate are both adopted in this study. The experimental results show that increasing the thickness of the endplate could improve the behavior of the joint, but delay the mobilization of catenary action. The thickness of the endplate should not be relatively thick in comparison to the diameter of the bolts, otherwise catenary action would not be mobilized or work effectively. Effective bending deformation of the endplate could help the formation and development of catenary action in the joints. The performance of flexural action in the joint would affect the formation of catenary action in the joint. Extra middle-row bolts set at the endplates and structural components set below the bottom beam flange should be used to enhance the robustness of joints. A special weld access hole between beam and endplate should be adopted to mitigate the chain damage potential of welds. It is suggested that the structural components of joints should be independent of each other to enhance the robustness of joints. Based on the component method, a formula calculating the stiffness coefficient of preloaded long bolts was proposed whose results matched well with the experimental results.

The Removal Efficacy of Heavy Metals and Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons from Contaminated Soils by Integrated Bio-phytoremediation

  • In this study, the bio-phytoremediation and phytoremediation technologies were applied to the soils contaminated with total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) and heavy metals to evaluate the remediation efficacy from May 2012 to December 2013. Poplar (Populus bonatii Levl.) and Sun Hemp (Crotalaria juncea L.) were selected and planted in phytoremediation practice. These plants were also utilized in the bio-phytoremediation practice, with the addition of earthworm (Eisenia fetida) and petroleum-degrading bacteria (Pseudomonos sp. NKNU01). Furthermore, physiological characteristics, such as photosynthesis rate and maximal photochemical yield, of all testing plants were also measured in order to assess their health conditions and tolerance levels in adverse environment. After 20 months of remedial practice, the results showed that bio-phytoremediation practice had a higher rate of TPH removal efficacy at 30-60 cm depth soil than that of phytoremediation. However, inconsistent results were discovered while analyzing the soil at 100 cm depth. The study also showed that the removal efficiency of heavy metals was lower than that of TPH after remediation treatment. The results from test field tissue sample analysis revealed that more Zinc than Chromium was absorbed and accumulated by the tested plants. Plant height measurements of Poplar and Sun Hemp showed that there were insignificant differences of growth between the plants in remediation plots and those in the control plot. Physiological data of Poplar also suggested it has higher tolerance level toward the contaminated soils. These results indicated that the two testing plants were healthy and suitable for this remediation study.

국내 가축분뇨 해양배출의 현황과 대책 (The Present Conditions and Measures for Ocean Dumping of Livestock Excreta Wastes in Korea)

  • 국내에서 가축분뇨 폐기물의 해양배출에 관한 현황 및 정부와 업계의 입장을 살펴보고, 정부(해양수산부 및 농림부)와 업계(대한양돈업협회 및 해양배출협회) 간의 갈등을 해결하는 대책을 검토하였다. 갈등해결을 위한 대책으로서 첫째, 가축분뇨 전량 육상처리의 가능성에 대한 사전 검토, 둘째, 가축분뇨 육상처리에 따른 민원해결방안의 강구, 셋째, 법제화된 규칙의 시행 가능성에 대한 사전검토, 넷째, 양돈업계나 해양배출업계와 같은 관련 업계를 위한 지원 방안의 강구, 다섯째, 국가차원의 폐기물해양배출제도 전면 재검토 등이 제시되었다.

도로인접성에 따른 육상 풍력자원 잠재량 평가 (Evaluation of Onshore Wind Resource Potential According to the Road Proximity)

  • Wind turbines should generally be installed at a certain distance from a road to ensure passengers' safety. In Korea, there is no clear guidance as the Ministry of Environment first proposed a road setback distance of 400 m in the Onshore Wind Farm Siting Guidelines draft proposed in July 2012, and then modified it to 1.5 times the height of the wind turbine in October of the same year. This study analyzed the dynamic range of onshore wind resource potential according to how the road setback distance is set using the Korea Wind Atlas with 100m spatial resolution made by the Korea Institute of Energy Research, the transportation network of the Ministry of Construction and Transportation, and the forest road network of the Korea Forestry Service. Owing to the geographical characteristics of Korea, where mountainous terrain accounts for 70% of the total territory, the wind resource potential within 1 km from forest roads are estimated to be 14.3 GW, 14% of Korea's total wind resource potential. In addition, the construction distance of new road for transporting wind turbines from the existing road to a wind farm site is estimated as less than 2 km. Given the limited wind resource potential and geographical constraints, an assessment system that can maximize wind resource utilization and ensure road safety at the same time, and which takes into account the regional characteristics instead of applying the fixed road setback distance across-the-road, is required.

폐 CCA처리재의 소각처리 (The Combustion Safety of Waste CCA Treated Wood)

  • 사용이 끝난 폐 CCA 처리재의 폐기를 위한 안전한 소각 방법을 찾고자 본 시험을 실시하였다. CCA 처리재를 온도를 달리하여 소각한 후 중금속의 잔존량을 측정하였으며, 동시에 비소가 비산되는 온도조건을 탐색하였다. 그리고 소각처리가 끝난 소각재 내에 잔존하는 CCA 유효성분인 중금속을 다양한 용제로 회수한 후 회수율을 비교하였다. 연소 후, 잔존하는 중금속 분석에서 비소는 $300^{\circ}C$에서는 비산되지 않음을 알 수 있었다. CCA 처리재를 저온으로 연소하면 비소의 비산은 방지 할 수 있으나, $300^{\circ}C$에서 중량감소율이 $55\%$에 머물러 소각 후 잔류물을 매립하여야 하는 문제점이 있다. 따라서 고온으로 소각 시 비산되는 비소를 포집할 수 있는 효과적인 방법 마련이 필요하며, 고온으로 소각하여도 소각재중에는 크롬과 구리가 다량으로 함유되어 있으므로 적절한 방법으로 이들을 회수하는 방법이 마련되어야 한다. 실험결과 소각재중에 남아있는 중금속 회수에는 $10\%$ 질산으로 처리한 것이 가장 효과적이었다.

무인항공기(UAV)를 활용한 건설현장 가시설물 안전관리 (Safety Management of Steel Pipe Scaffold using UAV)

  • 본 연구에서는 건설현장을 대상으로 무인항공기(UAV) 촬영을 통하여 얻어진 사진측량 자료를 이용하여 작업발판 등의 가설시설물 설치에 대한 적정성을 검토하였다. 연구대상은 강원대학교 삼척캠퍼스내 건물보강공사를 위한 가시설물이다. 검토대상은 강관비계의 띠장방향 비계기둥 간격, 장선방향 비계기둥 간격, 띠장 간격이다. 무인항공기 측량자료를 이용하여 검토한 결과 장선방향 비계기둥 간격은 기준을 잘 준수하여 설치되어 있었으나, 띠장방향 비계기둥 간격과 띠장 간격은 기준에 미달된 개소도 다수 발견되어 개선이 요구되었다. 특히 띠장 간격은 대부분 지점에서 기준에 미달되어 있었다. 무인항공기촬영으로 3차원 자료를 이용하여 입체적인 측량이 가능하여, 타 시설물에 가려져 있거나 내부에 위치한 시설물도 측량이 가능하였다. 무인항공기 촬영을 통하여 신속하게 현장의 상태를 자료화할 수 있으며, 현장인력의 작업을 방해하지 않고 측량을 수행할 수 있었다. 가시설물의 설치기준은 작업자의 안전확보를 위해 반드시 준수되어야 함에도 불구하고 현장에서는 아직 소홀히 다루어지고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 현장공정관리에 무인항공기 등을 활용하여 정기적으로 점검을 할 수 있도록 법적 제도가 보완되어야 한다고 판단되었다.

패턴분류를 통한 산지사면의 위험도 평가 기법 (Slopes Risk Assessment Techniques through Pattern Classification)

  • 우리나라의 화강풍화토 지반의 사면붕괴 형태는 대부분 절토사면에서 발생하는 경우가 많고 풍화작용의 영향을 받는 표층부 지반 안정성을 파악하는 것이 중요하다. 표층부에서 채취한 시료를 이용하여 기본 물성시험 및 점착력과 내부마찰각 시험을 수행하였고, 현장조사 결과를 토대로 자연사면의 안정성 검토를 수행여 형태별 패턴(쐐기형, 무한사면형, 유한사면형)을 분류 하였다. 또한 분류된 패턴별로 수치해석을 수행하였으며 그 결과를 토대로 최소안전율과 사면경사각의 관계를 개괄적인 안정도 추정에 기초 자료로서 제공하고자 하였다. 본 연구에서 산정된 강도정수들은 몇 개의 특정사면의 경우에 대한 것으로서 모든 사면의 안정해석에 그대로 적용 가능한 것은 아니다. 그러나 현실적으로 모든 경사면과 강도정수에 대해서 실험을 실시하는 것은 어려울 뿐만 아니라 비용면에서도 불가능한 실정이다. 따라서 사면안정에 영향을 미치는 단위중량, 점착력, 내부마찰각의 변화와 사면 경사각의 변화에 따른 위험도 평가를 정립하기 위해서는 수치모델링과 같은 방법을 사용하여 현장조건의 다양한 변화에 대응할 수 있는 패턴별 위험도 평가기준이 작성된다면 대단히 유용할 것이다. 따라서 대표적인 사면형태(TYPE-I~IV)와 사면경사각에 강도정수를 적용하여 최소 안전율을 제시한다면 자연사면의 간이 안정해석이 가능 할 것으로 사료된다.
