This study was carried out to determine the ways in which drying improves and develops dredged soils which exist widely in the lowlands of Korea. Before drying there were large variations in the fundamental physico-chemical properties of dredged soils collected from different places. In the sample soils, saturated hydraulic conductivity decreased gradually with an increase in bulk density with the exception that in air-dried soils a reverse trend was observed. Also in the sample soils, the sedimentation volume and the consistency limits decreased gradually with the decrease in soil water content after the air-drying treatment. The porosity of the sample soils decreased from $0.67{\sim}0.87m^3/m^3\;to\;0.58{\sim}0.66m^3/m^3$ and the liquid-phase range decreased from $0.41{\sim}0.83m^3/m^3\;to\;0.29{\sim}0.71m^3/m^3$. The solid-phase range of sample soils increased $0.13{\sim}0.33m^3/m^3\;to\;0.24{\sim}0.37m^3/m^3$ same as above with air-drying treatment. In conclusion the air-drying treatment caused an irreversible effect on some physical properties. Accordingly, these facts indicate that the effects of air-drying treatment on these properties are considered to be resulted from irreversible changes in the structural status of the sample soils.
This study was conducted to compare the physical and chemical properties of soils in Quercus acutissima, Q. mongolica, Q. serrata, and Q. variabilis stands. A total of 423 plots (Q. acutissima 72 plots, Q. mongolica 150 plots, Q. serrata 97 plots, and Q. variabilis: 104 plots) were examined to determine the soil properties of A and B horizons throughout the country. The physical and chemical properties of soils were significantly different among the four different Quercus spp. stands. The sand content in both horizons was significantly higher in Q. acutissima stands than in the other three oak stands, whereas the clay content was lowest among the four stands. The soils in Q. mongolica and Q. serrata stands were more acidified than those in Q. acutissima and Q. variabilis stands. The concentrations of organic carbon and total nitrogen in both soil depths were significantly higher in Q. mongolica stands than in Q. serrata, Q. variabilis, and Q. acutissima stands. The content of available phosphorus was significantly higher in Q. mongolica and Q. serrata stands than in Q. acutissima and Q. variabilis stands; whereas the contents of exchangeable potassium, calcium, and magnesium were lower in Q. mongolica and Q. serrata stands than in Q. acutissima and Q. variabilis stands. The cation exchange capacity was highest in Q. mongolica stands, followed by that in Q. serrata, Q. variabilis, and Q. acutissima stands. These data indicate the need to design a nutrient management plan to enhance the low soil pH and exchangeable cation in Q. mongolica and Q. serrata stands.

The present study investigated variations in soil microbial communities and the chemical properties of forest soils by differing amounts of penetrating sunlight. The soil temperature was significantly higher in higher light-penetrated soils. Higher light-penetrated soils (LP70) showed significantly more fungal communities than the lower light-penetrated soils (LP40 and LP50) (p < 0.05). The $NH_4$-N concentration in LP70 was significantly lower than those of LP40 and LP50, whereas the other chemical properties showed no significant difference among the soils. The cy19:0 to $18:1{\omega}7c$ ratio was significantly lower in LP70 than in LP 40 and LP50 showing the negative correlation of light level with microbial stresses (p < 0.05). The soil microbial communities and the chemical properties that showed positive eigenvector coefficients for PC1 were the fungi to bacteria, fungi, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, and Gram-positive bacteria, whereas negative eigenvector coefficients were found for $NH_4$-N, actinomycetes, Gram-negative bacteria, and bacteria. Consequently, the amount of penetrating light was responsible for microbial compositions in the forest soils in correlation with the concentration of $NH_4$-N and soil temperature.
Generally potassium in the soil can be remained as water soluble, exchangeable, and available types, respectively. Theses types of potassiums are also known to keep their kinetic relationships to each other. The Purpose on this research was to investigate types and relationships of potassium in the soil, and the characteristics of potassium supply in different forest soils. The results could be summarized as follows; 1. The amounts of available potassium in A and B horizon soils by continuous leaching with 0.01N-HCl were as follows : for A Horizon soils, pohang(Gray brown forest soils), Changsung (Brown forest soils), and Youngwol(Dark red forest soils) were ranged from 0.2me/l00g to 0.8me/100g, Taean(Red and Yellow forest soils) was 0.1-0.6me/100g, Kapyung(Brown forest soils) was 0.2-0.4me/100g. For the B layer, Youngwol was 0.1-0.5me/100g, Pohang, Taean, Kapyung were 0.1-0.4me/100g, Changsung was 0.1-0.3me/100g, respectivly. 2. Of ten times-pulse leaching with 0.01N-HCl for A layer soil, more 80% of total available potassium leaching were recovered by the second pulse as leachate for Pohang, Changsung, Youngwol, while similar amounts of potassium in the leachate were obtained with the third pulse leaching for Kapyung, Taean, respectively, On the other hand, the 80 % release of available potassium from the B layer soil was obtained by the second pulse leaching for all areas investigated. 3. For the relationships between soluble potassium and exchangeable potassium, the exchangeable potassium was increased while the soluble potassium was not changed significantly in B layer. And both soluble potassium and exchangeable potassium in A layer were similar. For the relationship between exchangeable potassium and available potassium in both A and B layers, the amounts of available potassium increased by 1.2 to 1.5 times as the exchangeable potassium increased. 4. For distribution of all types of potassium throughout locations investigated, the types of potassium were in the decreasing orders of available, exchangeable, and soluble. 5. The simplified method for an analysis of all types of potassium by sequential leaching with 0.01N-HCl should be developed not only with respect to time-saving and efficiency but also verification of the relationship between available potassium and tree growth.
Some physical and chemical properties of forest soils in Korea were analyzed for providing the reasonable management methods of forest lands, Among 375 soil series surveyed until 1979, 93 soil series of forest soils were classified and analyzed according to their characteristics. Firstly soil data were classified into 5 categories by weathered products and secondly were classified and analyzed by parent rocks. The results are as follows: 1) In forest soils characterized by weathered products volcanic ash soils were proved to be the most fertile and alluvial soils were turned out to be the most infertile soils. Residual soils on mountain and hill were mostly on the average in all kinds of soil properties analyzed except total soil depth. 2) Igneous rocks developed rather infertile soils containing large amount of organic matter and available $P_2O_5$ with relatively deep soil depth and strong acidity. On the other hand sedimentary rocks produced rather shallow soils containing small amount of organic matter and available $P_2O_5$ but they were relatively fertile with weak acidity. 3) Among igneous rocks basalt and trachyte produced very fertile soils and granite and andesite produced slightly infertile soils. 4) Among sedimentary rocks limestone soils had high fertility neutral in acidity but low amount of available $P_2O_5$ 6) Alluvial sand produced generally very infertile soils with great soil depth comparing with the arable alluvial land with high fertility.

Rhizina undulata is the fungus, which causes Rhizina root rot on coniferous trees. Nested-PCR using ITS-specific primer was applied to detect R. undulata from the soils of Japanese black pine (Pinus thunbergil) forests infested with the disease in Seocheon, Chungnam Province, South Korea. Soil samples were collected from four different sites, both dead trees and fruit bodies of R. undulata were present, dead trees only present, fruit bodies only present, and both were absent. Nested-PCR products specific to R. undulata ITS-region were amplified. Positive reactions were found in some samples from the sites, where dead trees and fruit bodies of R. undulata were absent as well as where both of those were present. R. undulata was mainly detected in the soil samples from the depth of 5~20 cm under the soil surface. These results show that the nested-PCR could be used to diagnose the presence or potential infestation of R. undulata in the soils of pine forests.

The materials of artificial soils in the production process of container seedlings have a great influence on plant growth. Peat moss, vermiculite, and perlite have been used as major components of artificial soils for many years; however, they could decrease carbon fixation carried out by the soil and cause environmental problems such as a change in the water quality. Thus, environmental friendly materials to replace them must be developed. The purpose of this study was to verify the optimum additive materials of artificial soils and their mixed ratios for the growth and seedling quality index (SQI) of Quercus serrata. Rice husk, mushroom sawdust, and pine bark were each used as an additive material and mixed into the growth medium at 10% and 20% of the total volume. There was no significant difference in the height growth of Q. serrata. The 20% mushroom sawdust decreased the root collar diameter by 23.4% compared to the control. The total dry weight was highest with the 10% rice husk and was significantly lower by 10.3% for the 20% mushroom sawdust compared to the control. Additionally, the SQI for all the treatments showed no tendency to increase compared with the control. Thus, this study showed the possibility of recycling biomaterials from agriculture and forest for seedling production. This method could reduce environmental problems and help eco-friendly nurseries to achieve a carbon negative impact by the recycling of by-products.

Distribution of heavy metal (Zn, Pb, Cu, Cd) concentrations within forest soils was investigated in Mts. Surak and Bulam around the outskirt area, and Mts. Bukak and Inwang around the downtown area of Seoul. Metal concentrations in these soils were higher in the A horizons than in the B horizons. The mean concentrations of Zn, Pb, Cu, and Cd in the A horizons were 4.39 mg/kg, 9.09 mg/kg, 1.67 mg/kg, and 0.03 mg/kg, respectively. The concentrations in the B horizons were 2.18 mg/kg in Zn, 5.74 mg/kg in Pb, 0.55 mg/kg in Cu, and 0.01 mg/kg in Cd, respectively. With positive correlation among the metal concentrations, Zn, Pb, and Cu concentrations in the A horizon were positively correlated with soil organic matter contents (r=0.39~0.83, p<0.01), while Pb and Cu concentrations were negatively correlated with soil pH (r=-0.53~0.59, p<0.01). The results suggest that the metals in forest soils have accumulated more in the downtown than in the outskirt areas.
In 1970's Black locust(Robinia pseudoacacia) had been widely planted Korea as an important forest greening species for erosion control afforestation. Since 2000, however, the tree's leaf-yellowing symptom has often been observed at a limited region and then spreaded out over the country in 2006. This study was conducted to study soil physiochemical properties of black locust stands with and without the leaf-yellowing symptom in Osan, Gyeonggi province. Most of soils in sampling sites were mostly slightly eroded, dry, and moderately dry. Available soil depth(16cm) and total soil depth(26cm) in leaf-yellowing (LY) site were significantly lower than in non leaf-yellowing (Non-LY) site's soil depths which were 30cm and 56cm, respectively. And solid phase proportion and bulk density in soils were lower in LY site than in non-LY site soils, while soil liquid phase proportion was also low. It could reflect that LY site soils might have a lower air and moisture movement in the rhizosphere of black locust stand compared with non-LY site soils. Soil acidity in both sites was very strong acid, soil pH (4.42) of LY site was slightly lower than non-LY site's (pH 4.54). Content of available phosphorous, exchangeable $Ca^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$ and percent base saturation were less than LY site. These results indicated that soil physiochemical condition in LY site, more deteriorated than non-LY site, should adversely affect the retention and supply capacity of soil nutrients and moisture. Therefore the black locust may be more sensitive to other environmental stresses.
To examine the soil reinforcement by the shrub with shallow root systems for slope stability, we developed insitu apparatus for direct shear test and conducted the insitu field tests for Lespedeza cyrtobotrya, a representative revegetation species for artificial hillslopes. The insitu field tests were conducted for two different soil conditions (the rooted soils and non-rooted soils) and we then compared the experimental values with those calculated from the Wu model. The results showed that the soil reinforcement derived from the insitu field tests ranged from 0.01525 to 0.1438 $kgf/cm^2$ while the one calculated from the Wu model ranged from 0.1952 to 0.2696 $kgf/cm^2$. Our finding suggests more field tests are needed to collect the related parameters in the model application thereby predicting the reliable soil reinforcement by the shrub root systems.
