  • To test whether the Grime's model on relationship between maximum standing crop plus litter (350~750g/$m^2$) and species density (10~30/0.25$m^2$) fit well or not, a total of 52 samples, with 4 replicate plots (0.5m$\times$0.5m each) per sample, was collected from various forests, grass lands and coastal salt marshes in midwestern part of central Korean peninsula from September to October in 1982. The result agrees well with the model for grass lands salt marshes, that is, shape of curve for the maximum standing crop (minus litter) against species density indicates normal distribution. The number of species was 11 for the grassland and 7 for the salt marshes within the range of 300g to 700g per square meter for the maximum standing crop. In forest stands, however, as the maximum standing crop of herbs increased the species density decreased. The Grime's model does not seem to fit with the resutls on forest stands of this study. It is examined further the relationships among the maximum standing crop, species density and eleven soil properties, and the possible cause of this discrepancy was disscused.

  • The changes in the area and standing crop of forests and the understory vegetation structure of various plantations were investigated by literature survey to predict the changes in the structure of forest ecosystems of the Korean Peninsula in the future. The greater part of forest was severely destroyed in 1950's in the Korean Peninsula. The forest standing crop has been dramatically increasing since the nationwide plantation was actively performed in 1970's and 1980's in the Republic of Korea. The area of forest was incessantly decreased at the rate of $5,500ha\;yr^{-1}$. The results of regression analysis on the changes in forest standing crop of the Republic of Korea showed that the forest might approach to the maturity stage in around 2150. It was predicted that the potential natural vegetation of Quercus mongorica, Fraxinus rhynchophyllus, Prunus sargentii, etc. would establish in the plantations of Larix leptolepsis, Pinus koraiensis and Robinia pseudoacacia in the future.

  • The current method of calculating the carbon stocks of Korea's forests is to multiply the forest standing crop by basic wood density, biomass expansion factor, and carbon fraction, but it does not sufficiently reflect forest vegetation. This study attempted to present a method of calculating carbon stocks using the biotope map and Biomass Allometric Equations for forests in Suji-gu, Yongin City. The biotope map is prepared every five years and contains detailed information on vegetation, including the actual vegetation and land cover status. The forest biotope of Suji-gu was extracted from the Yongin City biotope map, and the tree species, height, and breast height diameter of 24 representative types of forest vegetation sampled in Yongin City were analyzed in detail. To calculate the carbon stocks of trees and shrubs, the Biomass Allometric Equations developed by the National Institute of Forest Science was used, and to calculate the carbon stocks of shrubs, the previous research result of 0.457 kg per m2 was applied. First, carbon storage was calculated for each types of forest vegetation sampled in Yongin City, and in order to apply this to the entire area, the 125 forest vegetation types in Suji-gu, Yongin City were retyped into 50. As a result, the Quercus mongolica community occupied the largest area, followed by the Pinus rigida community, the Quercus acutissima community, and the Quercus serrata community. The community with the highest carbon stocks per unit area (m2) was the Cornus controversa-Quercus mongolica community, and the community with the lowest was the oak-Betula dahurica community. The carbon stocks amount of forests in Suji-gu, Yongin City, calculated by applying the biotope map and Biomass Allometric Equations, was relatively higher than the carbon stocks amount calculated by multiplying existing forest standing crop by basic wood density, biomass expansion factor, and carbon fraction. This is because the currently officially used forest standing crop in Yongin City (144.44 m3/ha) does not sufficiently reflect the actual forest vegetation, and trees with a breast height diameter of less than 6 cm were excluded when surveying forest standing crop, resulting in a lower carbon stocks amount than the actual amount. This study complements the limitations of existing carbon stocks calculation methods by utilizing a biotope map with detailed information on vegetation, such as existing vegetation maps and land cover status, and a Biomass Allometric Equations developed by the National Institute of Forest Science, and provides higher precision when assessing carbon stocks of forests. It is meaningful in suggesting a method for calculating carbon stocks.

  • In order to elucidate the characteristics of standing crop biomass, production and nutrient content of dead bole in mature ecosystem, we surveyed the dynamics of decaying bole of old-aged deciduous forest in 1993 and 2002 in Kwangnung Experimental Forest Station. In addition, we and estimated annual bole production, water content, wood density and nutrient content and compared the results with that of temperate ecosystem. Total dead wood biomass was estimated to be 5.6ton/ha in 1993 and 17.6ton/ha in 2002. Standing dead tree accounted for a total of 1.1ton/ha in 1993 and 4.8ton/ha in 2002, which was 20% and 27% of the sum of dead bole mass in 1993 and 2002, respectively. Annual production of bole biomass was 1.3 ton/ha/yr. These values fall into the low range of dead wood biomass for the mature temperate ecosystems. Tree species composing standing bole was mainly Quercus and Carpinus trees. This bole species composition resembles alive species composition of this forest. Water content of bole increased as positive logarithmically, but wood density of bole decreased as negative exponentially along with the progress of decay. N, P, Ca and Mg concentrations in decaying boles generally increased with decay, except for K. Annual nutrient input via dead bole is 1.6kg/ha/yr for N, 0.04 kg/ha/yr for P. 1.0 kg/ha/yr for K, 1.7kg/ha/yr for Ca and 0.3 kg/ha/yr for Mg, respectively.

  • Ecological studies on the effect of an accidental fire on the composition of the post-fire vegetation in relation to the productivity system were made at the burned site on Mt. Samak located at Duckduwon-Ri, Sumyun, Chun Sung-Kun, Kangwon-Do, the same plots used in the previous study carried out in 1967. The result are summarized as follows. 1. In the productivity system, the standing crop measured was as follows; Carex Lanceolata var. Nana, Miscanthus purpurscens etc. were contained in the herbs and their individual number was larger than that of the woody plants. (Table 1). In the woody plants, Quercus Acutissima was the most abundant, showing larger number of tree than Quercus dentata. The S.D.R. value of the family Poaceae was the highest among the herbs and in the test plots, it was 4 times larger in number than in the controlled plots. (Table 3, Fig. 4, 5). 2. In the unburned sities, 5 dominant species were selected and by calculating their S.D.R., it was shown that woody plants, S.D.R. is 4.43 while it is 11.52 with herbs. (Table 4, Fig. 6). 3. When making comparisons with the standing crop on the higher around, it was found that the test plots had 522.45 gm more than the controlled and 1470. 53gm more than those on lower ground. These results were considered to indicate that high temperature caused by fire resulted in the increase of germination rate of seeds as it was seen in the previous study and it further stimulate the growth of the perennial plants. (Table 6, 7) 4. In the number of species, the standing crop was increased in the order of Genus Miscanthus and Genus Carex. and in the woody plants Genus Lespedeza was increased in the standing crop. 5. It was found that in the rest plots, total summed height was greater by about 6000cm than that in the controlled plots. 6. In conclusion, the forest fire gave a great loss to tall trees and woody plants burning them together with unmatured seeds. In the succession of the 2nd year it was considered that the growth of the perennial plants had been stimulated on the barned sites.

  • The productive structure and the productivity of ${\times}$Populus albaglandulosa plantations, where are middle parts of the Korean peninsula, were studied by means of stratifying clip technique and of allometry. The densities of stands in the sample areas were 693 trees/ha in 6 year-old plantation and 527 or 625 trees/ha in 9 year-old one. The photosynthetic part of the productive structure was not shown normal conical form but layering. So this was efficient to transmit solar radiation into the stand floor. The standing crop of the terrestrial parts of 6 year-old plantation was 18.11 ton/ha and that of 9 year-old one 38.8 to 47.3 ton/ha. The wood volume to trunk to 6 year-old was $31.3m^3/ha$ and that of 9 year-old was 68.8 to $83.9m^3/ha$. The annual net production of 6 year-old plantation was 4.8 ton/ha/year and that of 9 year-old one was 10.0 to 11.7 ton/ha/year and its wood volume of trunks was 17.9 to $21.1m^3/ha/year$. In the 9 year-old plantation the standing crop or the annual net production was different between two sample areas. This seemed that the cause was not due to chemical character but to physical character of soil.

  • The effect of stand-growing-stock characteristics of thinning area and non-thinning area on forest fire was studied in this work. 14 spots were selected from 3 counties such as Yangyang, Injae, and Gapyeong and on-the-spot investigations were performed to evaluate the effect of forest fire. The stand-growing-stock characteristics on the spots were analyzed through the height of tree, breast height diameter, clear length, mortality of branch, forest tree standing crop density, degree of closure, and shrub and grass cover degree. The relation between forest fire and the risk of spread of forest fire were analyzed from the analysis of the stand-growing-stock characteristics. It is considered from this work that the possibility of forest fire is decreased on the thinning area compared to the non-thinning area because of higher clearlength, lower number of tree, lower mortality of branch and higher shrub and grass cover degree.

  • Nicaragua is located in Central America, climatic conditions are considered tropical dry forest. Statistics reflex that in Nicaragua exits 24,000 rice farmers. National rice production only covers 73% of the national consumption. It exists two sowing system: irrigation and rainfed. Varieties used in both systems are mid-late maturity (120-135 days), there are 14 released varieties for irrigation, eight for rainfed, and eight landraces used in rainfed. The current breeding system (introduction of lines from Colombia) has increased the national production, however, has some limitation due to the lack of enough variability, reducing the proability of finding good genotypes and therefore the possibility of satisfying 100% of the demand. The purpose of this study was to analyze the problems that must be resolved in the short and long term to improve rice productivity in Nicaragua. In this paper we explain some proposal for an improvement plan. The selection of varieties with high adaptability to various cultivation environmental conditions it is necessary, also to thoroughly manage seed purity to supply certified seeds. In rice cultivation technology, it needs to improve seedling standing and weeding effect by improving soil leveling and water-saving cultivation technology. Also, proper fertilization and planting density must be established in irrigated and rain-fed areas. Furthermore, capacity must be strengthened by collecting and training with the most recent agricultural technology information, as well as by revitalizing the union rather than the individual farmer. It is necessary to develop varieties highly adaptable to the Nicaraguan cultivation environment, as well as to expand irrigation facilities and cultivation technology suitable for weather conditions in rain-fed areas. Last, it is necessary to maintain the consistency of agricultural policy for continuous and stable rice production in response to climate change events such as drought or intermittent heavy rain.

  • In this study, 18 plots were selected for particular investigation on Gangneung area and Samcheok area and Uljin area, where forest fire was occurred after thinning in 2007. After selection, a relationship between a damage of forest fire and thinning were compared and analyzed. Many factor such as a damaged species, a thinning or non-thinning, a direction of forest fire head, DBH, a height of tree, a mortality of tree, a leeward scorching ratio, a crown damage ratio, a forest tree standing crop density, a crown base height, a leaving of thinning slash, a location of plot (GPS), elevation, an aspect of slope, an angle of slope, and a topography were measured. Therefore, we analyzed a relationship with forest fire. In the result of this analysis, it was founded that the leeward scorching ratio was 24.7% on thinning area whereas 60.2% on non-thinning area. Subsequently, leeward scorching ratio on thinning area was increased by about 35.5% more than on non-thinning area. In the result of analysis about tree species, a forest of pine tree was more damaged than forest of oak tree. The mortality of tree was increased by about 41.4% on non-thinning area. When stands were close to thinning slashes, these were more damaged by 10${\sim}$20% than other stands for increasing of amount of a combustion material. Especially, as potential of re-ignition increased for more cumulated thinning slash, it will be more important to require a method for a periodical removing or practical utilization of slash.
