  • Learners and users of a second language have to resort to a variety of conversational strategies or structures to enable them to communicate effectively and competently. Factors affecting effective communication among English as a second or English as foreign language (ESL/EFL) learners are diverse in nature because of different socio-cultural backgrounds. Gambits as a conversational strategy are used to a large extent and teachers must be made aware of such conversational strategies used by English as second or foreign language learners. Thus, studies focusing on conversational strategies among ESL/EFL learners in the English language classroom are important in order to identify the types of conversational strategies used and to help teachers to understand the appropriate conversational strategies and structures. Such understanding can be used to guide learners to use correct conversational strategies when communicating in English. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the use of gambits as a communication strategy in conversation among non-native speakers of English in an English as a second language(ESL) context based on Kellers conversational strategy signals. • In this study, a model curriculum for the Library and Information Science programs in Junior Colleges is presented by comparing those curricula of the Republic of Korea, the United States of America, England and Japan. In Korea, 80 credits are required for graduate of Junior College and 60 credits of that total credits are for major courses. At Toshokan Danki Daikagu in Japan, 73 credits are opened for the Department of Library Science and 87 credits for the Department of Library and Information Science respectively. In the United States of America, 30 credits for major courses out of 90 total credits are opened at Lansing Community College and 24 credits for major courses out of 60-64 credits at Mesa Community College distinctively. On the basis of the various analyses, the following principles are applied in designning the model curriculum; (1) Possibly 3 credits per subject are assigned, (2) Major credits for graduate are 60-64 credits including possible optional subjects, (3) 20 percents of those 60-64 credits shall be applied for electives, so that 72-78 credits are assigned for major, (4) In order to combine theory and practice, and to select practice areas as required major, the ratio between required and elective must be adjusted, (5) In order to avoid duplication of subject, adequate individuality must be provided, (6) The Information Science areas must be dealt with in Library Science since computer systems are being rapidly adopted in libraries and the education for resources of materials and foreign languages are also important for successful fulfillment of mediator's roles between materials and users. Therefore the following model curriculum is suggested; 31 credits in 11 subjects for required major, 46 credits in 18 subjects for electives in major, total 77 credits for 29 subjects are established, and it includes such areas as material organization, foreign languages, resources of materials, library management, information science, fundamental studies, services and practice.

  • According to studies of many language education researchers including R. Ellis, a representative English education specialist, it is an effective and important method to improve the authenticity of English by learning a foreign language repeatedly in learner's actual situation. In this paper, we propose a foreign language learning service combined with context-awareness service, and develop foreign language learning contents which improves the authenticity of English learning based on the service. This approach is based on a study on digital education contents that helps learners to acquire a foreign language in an unconscious state in their real environment and a study to analyze the empirical characteristics of users based on real-time multi-sensed data.

  • As the number of ships and goods shipped by marine transportation increases, almost all shipping companies adopted foreign crews in order to overcome lack of seafarers and be competitive for manning cost. Thus, these days it is inevitable to work with foreign crews aboard ships, but there occur many marine accidents due to language barriers and communication problems under multicultural and multilingual shipboard environments. In order to resolve troubles resulting from different languages, reduce miscommunication risks, and make working on ships safe and efficient, this study recognized the current status of ships with mixed crews, analyzed marine accidents caused by communication problems not only in Korea but also in other countries using analytical methodologies. Additionally, existing hazards affecting miscommunication were identified and risk of miscommunication was quantitatively evaluated while offering suggestions and future forecasts. Consequently, in this study we suggested that fundamental dialogues are to be necessarily educated on the ships with foreign crews so as to reduce the language barrier and risk of miscommunication. Furthermore, a standard maritime Korean language program and manual targeting Korean coastal vessels would be developed in the next step.

  • Foreign countries have been used closed captioning for people with hearing loss. Recently some TV programs in Korea also have started to use it. Closed captioned films and video tapes of foreign countries are especially useful for people who want to learn foreign languages as an effective educational tool. In this paper, we propose a method of implementing captioning functionality to an existing streaming software. In addition we added repetitive and group selection of video segments for the new interface of our prototype system. We keep adding additional data and extending functions of our prototype system.

  • This study aims to explore the potential of Korean language learning as a means of psychological healing and improving the quality of life for Japanese middle-aged and older learners. Results showed that Korean language learning could help alleviate various psychological issues experienced by middle-aged learners and contribute to enhancing their quality of life. Learning a foreign language is not just about acquiring information but also about meeting people who use the language and understanding and experiencing their culture. In particular, for Japanese middle-aged learners, Korean language learning can be advantageous as it can lead to the discovery or development of new hobbies or interests. Results also showed that Korean language learning increased learners' opportunities for interaction with others and enjoyment of learning new cultural customs. These positive outcomes suggest the need for discussion of teaching strategies that focus on psychological healing in foreign language education. Further clinical trials with participants who learn foreign languages for healing purposes may provide more conclusive evidence on the diverse effects of language learning on stress, anxiety, depression, self-development, social connections, and cognitive ability.

  • This study aims at investigating the linguistic and educational factors affecting TOEFL scores, focusing on three OECD countries, Korea, Japan, and Finland. The data comprise document analysis on curriculums, websites, and literature. The findings reveal that the number of Korean test-takers and their TOEFL scores gradually increased year by year. Finnish test-takers consistently gained greatly high scores, and Japanese examinees showed the lowest scores. The languages Korean, Japanese, and Finnish are all far distant from English and receive little support on historical grounds from the Indo-European family tree. In Finland, however, Swedish which belongs to Indo-European languages is still used as an official language with Finnish. Korea and Finland adopt English education from Year 3 in primary school, whereas English is not an official subject in primary school at present in Japan. Finnish students are taught a foreign language in addition to English from primary school. These seem to support the result of the high TOEFL scores of Finnish test-takers. This study concludes that social context which includes linguistic and educational environments are the main factors which affect TOEFL scores.
