  • A Prototype reaction wheel, named the Hankuk Aviation University (HAU) reaction wheel, has been developed for KAISTSAT satellite series. Torque and force disturbances are inherent in reaction wheels, and thus the force and torque characteristics should be examined for every newly developed reaction wheel. The torque and force disturbance noises in the prototype HAU reaction wheel are measured with a torque-measuring table developed for the present study. A new measuring procedure based on a simple principle is applied for the measurements. The frequency characteristics of the torque and force noises are analyzed by examining the power spectral density. The effect of the torque noise on the attitude stability is also examined through numerical simulations with a single-axis attitude model. The noise-induced attitude error and jitter and found to be well below the specified error limits for the KAISTSAT satellite series.

  • In order to improve engine performance and its reliability it is very important to find the friction force between piston-ring assembly and cylinder wall in engine operating conditions. A new system was developed for the piston-ring assembly friction force measurement. This system had a relatively high fundamental frequency at 884 Hz and a fine resolution of 0.5N in friction force measurement. Comparing with existing floating liner systems this systems required small installation space and at the same time alleviated the system noise problem induced by the thrust and slap impulse forces.

  • Semiconductor piezoresistive type vibration sensor was fabricated by using semiconductor process and micromachining technology. To measure the micro electromagnetic force between coil and magnet, fabricated vibration sensor was used. Toapply micro electromagnetic force produced from the micro exciter, small-sized NdFeB permanent magnet was attached on the mass of the fabricated vibration sensor. The measured electromagnetic force are about 5~180dyne when the applied sinusoidal current of 1KHz in the range of 1.5~8mA. The measurement of micro electromagnetic forcewas performed by changing the distance between coil and magnet. Output characteristics of micro electromagnetic force according to the applied coil current were linear. Furthermore, output results were used to get the transfer constant that is important to decide the efficiency and the performance of the coil and magnet.

  • The restraint force is required an accurate measurement and analysis to protect weldment from residual stress. Also, this residual stress caused by clacks in weldments are often observed in the weldments of large size nozzles or radial tanks after welding. This paper is preformed on the study of evaluation of welding restraint forces using load cell with STS thin plate which are using pressure vessel steel in the industry field. As a result of this study, as the welding currents are higher and the welding speeds are more slowly, the magnitude of restraint force in process of the flat plate welding hows to be more large. Also, the temperature in process of melting is increasingly rising, then the restraint forces exhibit the compressive forces, whereas the restraint forces during cooling represent extensional force.

  • In this paper. a mechanistic model is first constructed to predict three-dimensional cutting forces, and the uncut chip th thickness is calculated by following the movements of the position of the center of a cutter, which varies with the nominal feed, cutter deflection and runout. For general implementation to a real machining, this paper presents the method that determines constant cutting force coefficients, irrespective of the cutting conditions or cutter rotation angles. In addition, this study presents the approach which estimates runout-related parameters. the runout offset and its location angle, using only one measurement of cutting forces. For more accurate cutting force predictions, the size effect has to be considered in the cutting force model. In this paper, two approximate methods are suggested since the strict approach is practically impossible due to a measurement problem. The size effect is individually considered for narrow and wide cuts.

  • One of the challenging problems with bicycle simulators is to deal with the inherent unstable bicycle dynamics that is coupled with rider's motion. For the bicycle dynamics calculation and the real time simulation, it is necessary to identify the control inputs from the rider as well as the virtual environments. The six control forces of the Stewart platform-based motion system are used for estimation of the rider's action force, which is one of the important control inputs, but of which the direct measurement is impractical. For the effective estimation of the rider's action force, the dynamics model of the motion system is derived incorporated with both analytical and experimental methods and the sliding mode controller with perturbation estimation is developed.

  • In this paper, we developed a working adaptation evaluation system using finger force measurement which interact between material and biological system. The system consists of a finger force transducer, a signal conditioner, an A/D converter, a computer, and a software system for data processing. The finger force transducer is made by a load cell and a special mechanism. The data processing software controls the A/D converter, data monitoring, and data analysis for group classification. The developed system were tested by 4 different materials in left hand and the finger forte transducer in the other hand's thumb and index finger with 16 persons. As the results of experiments, the developed system could measure the finger force quantitatively and classify the measured values into four groups.

  • For carbon neutrality, direct-injection hydrogen engines are attracting attention as a future power source. It is essential to estimate the transient injection rate of hydrogen for the optimization of hydrogen injection in direct injection engines. However, conventional injection rate measurement techniques for liquid fuels based on the injection-induced fuel pressure change in a test section are difficult to be applied to gaseous fuels due to the compressibility of the gas and the sealing issue of the components. In this study, a momentum flux measurement technique is introduced to obtain the transient injection rate of gaseous fuels using a force sensor. The injection rate calculation models associated with the momentum flux measurement technique are presented first. Then, the volumetric injection rates are estimated based on the momentum flux data and the calculation models and compared with those measured by a volumetric flow rate meter. The results showed that the momentum flux measurement can detect the injection start and end timings and the transient and steady regimes of the fuel injection. However, the estimated volumetric injection rates showed a large difference from the measured injection rates. An alternative method is suggested that corrects the estimated injection rate results based on the measured mean volumetric flow rates.

  • Appropriate upward force is crucial for the pantograph on high speed train to collect current from the catenery system without separation. However, at high speed, large aerodynamic lifting force is generated by the contact plate and the arms of pantograph, which may cause wear of the contact wire. In this study, to confirm the interface performance of the pantograph on Korea High Speed Train, a method to measure the contact force of the pantograph was proposed and the related measurement system was developed. The forces acting on the pantograph were clarified and a procedure to calculate the aerodynamic lifting force was proposed. A special device was invented and applied to measure the lifting force. Measured contact forces were displayed by the developed system and evaluated according to the criteria. Countermeasures were also taken to reduce the contact force based on the results.

  • This paper introduces the method how to measure the thrust in impulse facility. In a Facility having such a short duration time of steady flow, there's no time to reach a steady state of the forces acting on model so that the test model vibrates until the end of the flow. The forces exerted on an engine exist with vibration so that the usual force balance can not be used. SWFB(Stress Wave Force Balance) technique is utilized in a shock tunnel to get the thrust. As an example, a model force balance has been calculated its strain against impulse force by using FEM(Finite Element Method). A transfer function between the impulse force and strain has been obtained by the way of de-convolution.
