A radial artery pulse wave is measured while pressing an artery with constant force. However, pulse waveform measurements vary depending on pressing force and direction. Accurate pulse waveform measurements are important for analysis. Thus, it is necessary to define the measurement range of the permissible force and direction from which a correct pulse waveform is derived. In this study, pulse waves were generated by a pulse wave generator for accurate control. The pulse waves generated for different angles and pressing forces were analyzed. The augmentation index (AIx), which is the most commonly used index for evaluating vascular stiffness, was analyzed. The AIx was measured within ${\pm}6^{\circ}$ of the vessel direction and within ${\pm}8^{\circ}$ perpendicular to the vessel direction with a force that was 25% or more of the pressing force at which the maximum pressure wave was generated. We identified the applicable pressing force and angle range by analyzing the effect of pressing angle on the pulse wave. The AIx analysis performed using the pulse wave measurement device is reliable and reproducible.
In this study, it was studied whether a new measurement factor "frictional vibration" that occurs due to the material flow of the die and sheet metal in the flange area during deep drawing process, could be measured using an vibration sensor. The blank holder force acting on the flange area during drawing processing acts as a friction force in the opposite direction into which the sheet material flows and causes friction vibration. As the blank holder force increases, the friction force increases, and as the blank holder force decreases, the friction force also decreases. Because of this, friction vibration also increases and decreases in proportion to the size of the blank holder force. According to this theory, whether frictional vibration occurs was measured using a flange simulator and a vibration sensor. The initial pressure was created using a torque wrench, and it was confirmed that the amplitude increased by about 4 times when torque 6 Nm was increased. When the forming velocity was rapidly changed to 300 mm/min, the amplitude increased approximately 4 times. It was confirmed that the amplitude of frictional vibration according to the measurement location was greater the further away from the specimen. It was verified that a new measurement factor "friction vibration" in the flange area can be measured and used for online monitoring.
The methods for the occlusal force measurement have long been developed. The occlusal analyzing equipment utilizing the pressure-sensitive film (Prescale) is useful for the assessment and comparison among large group of patients. On the other hand, the apparatus which uses the grid-based sensor sheet (T-scan) can be a useful assistant for acquiring the well-balanced occlusion. The device that can process the electrical input from the strain gauge which is attached to the tooth surface can collect the dynamic data of actual masticatory force. This device has been developed for the measurement of actual mastication with the food bolus and it can be a useful method for the comparison before and after the restorative treatment. Occlusal force measurement can be applied for the analysis of therapeutic action, diagnosis of crack- tooth syndrome, temporomandibul ar disease, and idiopathic implant loosening.
In the case of the general helicopter among rotorcraft, length of the rotor blade for thrust-generation is longer than that of fuselage and tail rotor is required in order to compensate moment of the fuselage. For those reasons, enough space for take-off and landing should be secured and an accessibility for building is low. Also, the accidents caused by tail rotor occur frequently. However, the case of counter-rotating has merits that tail rotor is unnecessary as well as length of the rotor blade can be shortened but has a weakness that the weight of body is increased. In the present study, aerodynamic force measurement on single rotor system equipped with NACA0012 airfoil, which has aspect ratio of 6 and chord length of 35.5 mm, was carried out. And measurement was conducted with blade which has a half size of the former blade by using single motor counter-rotating. Aerodynamic force measurement was acquired by using 6-component balances and coefficients of thrust and power were derived along the pitch angle varying from 0$^{\circ}$ to 90$^{\circ}$ with the increment of 10$^{\circ}$. Those aerodynamic force data will be utilized for the design and production of brand-new counter-rotating rotor blade system which has same thrust with single blade system and provides a good accessibility to building by reducing its blade length.

The pantograph for Korean High Speed Train was developed by home-grown technology. In this study, a system to measure the contact force of pantograph is developed and installed on the prototype high speed train, Contact force prevents the pantograph from separating from the catenary. However, excessive contact force causes rapid erosion of catenary. The contact force can be divided into lift force and spring force. Contact force measurement is conducted while the train runs on the test track. The lift force is measured by the load cell on the roof separately and combined with the spring force of pan-head to form the contact force. Measured results show that the contact force of the pantograph of Korean High Speed Train is below the upper limit regulated by the high speed train standards. The contact force measuring system provides data to evaluate safety of the catenary system.

Recently, force measurement systems are commonly used in many industrial fields and the precision of the measurement system is getting more important as the industry needs more precise tools and in struments to make high quality products. However, a high precision force measurement system is hard to make unless we know precisely the causes, quality and quantity of measurement errors in advance. In this work, many possible mechanical causes of measurement errors are reviewed including ratio of length to diameter of sensing part, radius of contact area, radius of bearing part, ratio of material properties and change of boundary conditions. Also, the measurement errors are analyzed by nonlinear finite element method and the nonlinear behavior of the errors are investigated. The results can be used to design force measurement systems and expected to be very useful especially for compact type load cells.

This paper presents static and dynamic measurement of the stress and motion characteristics for crawler type excavators. Eight scenarios were prepared for static measurement based on two extreme digging positions, maximum digging reach position and maximum digging force position. The measured items for static motion included stress, cylinder pressure, cylinder stroke and digging force. The measured static stresses showed that asymmetric digging force acting on a bucket induced higher stress level than symmetric one. The measured static pressures and digging forces also agreed with design pressures and design digging forces, respectively. The dynamic measurement was performed for two types of motion, that is, simple reciprocation of each cylinder and actual digging motion. The measured items for dynamic motion were stroke and pressure of each cylinder, stresses on the working device and acceleration on the upper plate of an arm. The measured data showed that the natural frequency of the excavator highly depended on the hydraulic stiffness of cylinders. Digging motion tests revealed that digging motion was closer to static motion rather than dynamic one.

In this study, a carbon nanotube probe (CNT probe) is proposed as a mechanical force transducer for the measurement of pico-Newton (pN) order force in biological applications. In order to measure nantube's displacement in the air or liquid environment, the fabrication of a CNT probe with tip-specific loading of fluorescent dyes is performed using tip- specific functionalization of the nanotube and chemical bonding between dyes and nanotube. Also, we experimentally investigated the mechanical properties of the CNT probe using electrostatic actuation and fluorescence microscope measurement. Using fluorescence measurement of the tip deflection according to the applied voltage, we optimized the bending stiffness of the CNT probe, therefore determined the spring constant of the CNT probe. The results show that the spring constant of CNT probes is as small as 1 pN/nm and CNT probes can be used to measure pN order force.

In machine tools, frictional force exists between the table and the guideways, and in ballscrews. In this paper, feed motor current measured by a hall sensor is used to calculate the motor torque. Some frictional phenomena are studied in feed drive systems, such as the relationship between feedrate and frictional torque, and chip cover effects on frictional torque. Considering frictional phenomena, the relation- ship between the feed froce and the feed motor current id obtained. Feed force can be well estimated by feed motor current measurement considering frictional behavior. The relationship between the cutting force and the feed motor current is slightly different between up milling and down milling due to the effect of y direc- tional cutting force on frictional torque.
To facilitate the cell based robot research, we presented a micro-mechanical force measurement system for the biological muscle actuators, which utilize glucose as a power source for potential application in a human body or blood vessels. The system is composed of a micro-manipulator, a force transducer with a glass probe, a signal processor, an inverted microscope and video recoding system. Using this measurement system, the contractile force and frequency of the cardiac myocytes were measured in real time and the magnitude of the contractile force of each cardiac myocyte on a different condition was compared. From the quantitative experimental results, we estimated that the force of cardiac myocytes is about $20{\sim}40\;{\mu}$N, and showed that there is difference between the control cells and the micro-patterned cells.
