A Study on the legal system to trace the bycaught whale and dolphin meat in the market (혼획 고래 유통 이력 추적을 위한 제도 개선 방안 연구)

  • Whaling has been banned in Republic of Korea after the declaration of the moratorium on the commercial whaling by the International Whaling Commission (IWC) since 1986. Korean government followed the moratorium immediately. However whale meat market has been kept by the bycaught whales and dolphins. So Korean government established a rule to control and trace whale meat in the market in 2011. The rule has some loopholes to allow illegally taken whale meat smuggle into the market. This study investigates the flaws in the current rule and recommend the way to overcome that defects. The first step is to prevent the entry of the illegal whale meat into the market. Minor change of the current law would be a solution. The next measure is to increase the sampling rate of the whale DNA that allowed to distribute in the market. The DNA database would be a powerful tools to identify illegal whale meat which is existing in the market. Korean government is operating three kind of food traceability systems. However, because of the legal limitations and the opposition of the non-governmental animal rights organizations, it is difficult to include whale meat to the existing systems. So the last step is to establish a new Traceability System with a state-of-the-art IT technology like as blockchain. The three measures mentioned above would increase the transparency in the whale meat market and prevent the entry of the illegal products.

Luminescence properties and compositions of contaminating inorganic minerals separated from gamma-irradiated fresh and white ginsengs from different areas

  • Gamma-irradiation (0-7 kGy) of ginseng is permitted in Korea for the purpose of microbial decontamination; with strict labeling, traceability and monitoring requirements. An identification study was conducted to determine the photostimulated-luminescence (PSL) and thermoluminescence (TL) properties of gamma-irradiated fresh and white ginsengs cultivated in different areas. Dose- dependent PSL-based screening was possible for white ginseng samples; however, inappropriate results from non-irradiated fresh ginseng samples were obtained, showing intermediate (700 to 5,000) or positive ($T_2$ >5,000, irradiated) PSL counts due to the abundance of minerals on the surfaces of the samples. TL analysis of separated minerals from all non-irradiated samples gave TL glow curves of low intensity with a maximum peak after $300^{\circ}C$. However, well-defined irradiation-specific (high intensity with a maximum peak at about $200^{\circ}C$) glow curves were observed for all the irradiated samples, regardless of their type and origins. TL ratios (first glow curve /second glow curve) were also determined to confirm the irradiated (>0.1) and non-irradiated (<0.1) results. SEM-EDX (scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive X-ray) and XRD (X-ray diffraction) spectroscopic analyses showed that feldspar and quartz minerals were the main source for the typical radiation-specific luminescence properties.

농산물 이력추적 시스템의 생산자 지속적 사용의도에 관한 연구

  • 본 연구의 목적은 농산물 이력추적 시스템을 사용하는 생산자들의 시스템에 대한 만족과 지속적인 사용의도에 영향을 주는 요인을 파악하여 농산물 이력추적 시스템의 활성화를 위한 기초자료를 제공하는 것이다. 실증적인 검증을 위하여 재사용의도와 관련한 선행연구들을 검토하여 TAM과 ECT를 결합시킨 Extended ECT 모델을 제안하고 실제 농산물 이력추적 사업에 시범참여하고 있는 생산자 100명을 상대로 설문조사를 실시하였다. 분석 결과, 지각된 유용성 및 용이성, 수익성은 시스템 만족에 긍정적인 영향을 미치며 이는 지속적인 사용의도로 연결되었으나 지각된 용이성과 유용성이 직접적으로 지속적인 사용의도에 영향을 미치는 것은 아닌 것으로 나타났다. 이 결과는 농산물 외의 식품 이력추적 시스템에도 포괄적으로 적용이 가능하다.

Advances and Future Directions in Poultry Nutrition: An Overview

  • In the past, poultry nutrition has focussed on increasing the production efficiency to meet the progress achieved in the genetic potential of broilers and layers. Future directions in poultry nutrition will be driven by not only by the need to maximise biological and economic performance of birds, but also by societal issues (environment, antibiotic growth promoters, welfare, traceability and use of genetically modified ingredients). Key advances in poultry nutrition are discussed and future directions, which can be expected, are highlighted. Given the tightening supply and ever-increasing cost of raw materials, there will be more pressure to extract every unit of energy and nutrients from feed ingredients. In this context, a number of feed additives are expected to play an increasingly significant role. Feed enzymes and crystalline amino acids, in particular, will have a profound effect on future sustainability of the poultry industry. Future nutritional research need to focus on identifying the barriers to effective digestion and utilisation of nutrients and, to achieve this objective, nutritionists must combine their expertise with those of specialising in other biological sciences, including immunology, microbiology, histology and molecular biology.

  • As technology develops, more advanced technologies involving GPS, GIS, RFID and sensor networks have been adopted in agriculture sector for u-Farm. However, technology adoptions have been evaluated as ineffective. Farmers and agri-business have low level of understanding on technology so it is not efficiently utilized. This study introduces a case of RFID/sensor networks of mushroom farm as a u-Farm case study, focusing on developing a framework for analysis of u-Farm investment returns. RFID and sensor networks improve real-time production control, processing management, and traceability. Integration of RFID and sensor networks leads to innovation into the mushroom farm, reducing labor cost, increasing productivity, and improving quality of the mushroom. The ROI which is used as an indicator of performance indicator is 413%.

  • 안전식품에 대한 요구와 국제적 관심사로 대두된 농수축산물의 이력추적관리시스템에 RFID 기술 적용 시, 객체식별을 위한 국제표준 준수와 국가별 표준 코드체계의 정립이 최우선시 된다. 최근 국내에서 표준화 고시된 가축 및 동물개체식별체계 상의 코드구분, 적용형태, 중복, 호환성 및 복제방지 등에 대한 단점 지적과 이견으로 개선의 필요성이 제기되고 있다. 본 연구1)에서는 기존의 국내외 이력추적관리 및 개체식별코드체계 관련 쟁점 및 표준화 동향을 분석한 후 개선방향을 제시한다.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate development of the solar salt industry in Korea. To achieve the objective, the study defined the concept of advancement and competitiveness improvement regarding the solar salt industry, and identified a present situation and problems of the solar salt industry. The result showed that to develop the solar salt industry in Korea, production system should be modernized, and distribution system should be changed to get consumer's trust, and it should be informed outstanding characteristics of Korean solar salt to consumers. Finally, the government and related corporation should push related system and policy such as traceability system to develop the solar salt industry in Korea.

  • As interest about safety of agricultural products has increased, attempts to establish food safety also have been actively made. One example is GAP(Good Agricultural Practices) information service. This service supplies the safe agricultural products to consumers by establishing the safety management system from their production to sale of the agricultural products. In this parer, the proposed system enables the users to easily use it by providing GAP information service and using RFID.

  • Genetically modified (GM) papaya line 55-1, which is resistant to PRSV infection, has been marketed globally. Prompt and sensitive protocols for specific detections are essential for the traceability of this line. Here, an event- and construct-specific real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) method was established to detect 55-1. Qualitative detection was possible for fresh papaya fruit up to dilutions of 0.005% and 0.01% for the homozygous SunUp and heterozygous Rainbow cultivars, respectively, in non-GM papaya. The method was applied in the qualitative detection of 55-1 in eight types of commercially processed papaya products. Additionally, papaya products were monitored to distinguish GM papaya using the P35S and T-nos RT-PCR detection methods. As expected, detection capacity was improved via modified sample preparation and the established RT-PCR detection method. Taking these results together, it can be suggested that a suitable method for the extraction and purification of DNA from processed papaya products was established for the detection of GM papaya.

Discrimination of white ginseng origins using multivariate statistical analysis of data sets

  • Background: White ginseng (Panax ginseng Meyer) is commonly distributed as a health food in food markets. However, there is no practical method for distinguishing Korean white ginseng (KWG) from Chinese white ginseng (CWG), except for relying on the traceability system in the market. Methods: Ultra-performance liquid chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry combined with orthogonal partial least squares discrimination analysis (OPLS-DA) was employed to discriminate between KWG and CWG. Results: The origins of white ginsengs in two test sets ($1.0{\mu}L$ and $0.2{\mu}L$ injections) could be successfully discriminated by the OPLS-DA analysis. From OPLS-DA S-plots, KWG exhibited tentative markers derived from ginsenoside Rf and notoginsenoside R3 isomer, whereas CWG exhibited tentative markers derived from ginsenoside Ro and chikusetsusaponin Iva. Conclusion: Results suggest that ultra-performance liquid chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry coupled with OPLS-DA is an efficient tool for identifying the difference between the geographical origins of white ginsengs.
