This study evaluated neuroprotective effects of Yanggyuksanhwa-tang (YST), which have been known to be efficacy in the treatment of the stroke and diabetes. on focal cerebral ischemia of diabetic rats. On primary experiment, diabetic condition in rats was induced by streptozotocin injection, then, focal cerebral ischemia was induced by the middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) under the diabetic condition. Then neuroprotective effect of YST was observed with changes of infarct size and volume, expressions of c-Fos, Bax, and hypoxia inducible factor (HIF)-1${\alpha}$ in the brain tissues by using 2% 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride (TTC) staining and immunohistochemistry. YST treatment showed a significant decrease of infarct size and volume induced by MCAO in diabetic rats. YST treatment showed a significant decrease of c-Fos and Bax positive neurons in cortex penumbra. YST treatment showed a decrease of HIF-l${\alpha}$ positive neurons in cortex penumbra, but it was not significant statistically. These results suggest that YST has effects on neuroprotection against cerebral infarct under diabetic condition. And it is supposed that neuroprotective effect of YST reveals by anti-apoptosis mechanism.

Phase Doppler particle analyze. (PDPA) is a instrument which can be used to obtain simultaneous size and velocity measurements in a multiphase flow. In this study, the size of the water droplets entrained from a bubbling surface of a stagnant liquid column is measured by PDPA with a specially designed transmitter of long focal length and large beam diameter. The test section tube is made of acryle with 18 mm I.D. and 900 mm length. The experimental data are obtained for the air superficial velocity between 0.7 m/s to 3.4 m/s at atmospheric pressure. The experimental results show that there exists large difference in the entrainment mechanism between the churn-turbulent flow and annular flow. Through the present study, the phase Doppler analyzer system is shown to be successfully applied to measure particle sizes larger than $2,000\mu\textrm{m}$ if a transmitter of long focal length is utilized.

The present study examined chronic effects of transient focal cerebral ischemia on the substantia nigra, a remote exofocal area, using immunohistochenmical and receptor autoradiographic techniques. Transient focal cerebral ischemia was induced by middle cerebral artery (MCA) occlusion for 60 or 90 min followed by reperfusion using silicone-coated 4-0 nylon monofilament in male Wistar rats. After 1- or 2-week reperfusion following transient MCA occlusion, there were partial losses of tyrosine hydroxylase-immunoreactive dopaminergic neurons, incieases in glial fibrillary acidic protein-immunoreactive cells (gliosis), decreases in [$^3$H]YM-09151-2 binding for dopamine D$_2$ receptors, and marked atrophy in the ipsilateral substantia nigra. The precise mechanism(s) of exofocal damage to the substantia nigra is remained to be elucidated.

The source parameters of four earthquakes with magnitude larger than 4.0 nearby the offshore Sinan are analyzed. The waveform inversion method is used for analyzing the source parameters of two events (20 August 2012 and 21 April 2013) with C&B and AK135-c crustal velocity structure models. The source parameters of the other two events (26 July 1994 and 23 March 2003) are obtained from references. Focal mechanisms of the events are strike slip faulting or strike slip faulting with a thrust component. The directions of P-axes of the events are ENE-WSW or NE-SW which are similar to previous studies on P-axes in and around the Korean peninsula. With regard to the events nearby the offshore Sinan, the regional stress, rather than being local stress, is seen to be the result of the combination of tectonic forces from the compression of plates colliding to the Eurasian Plate.

Transient forebrain ischemia results in delayed neuronal death in the CA1 region of the hippocampus after injury, which is, at least in part, a consequence of excessive generation of reactive oxygen species. Previous in vitro studies using cell cultures or brain slices have demonstrated that phospholipase D (PLD) in the nervous system is involved in the signaling mechanism in response to a variety of agonists. Several recent studies have shown that reactive oxygen species stimulate phospholipase D (PLD) activity in several kinds of cells. Therefore, this raises the possibility that PLD activity is enhanced in the ischemic brain. Meanwhile, osteopontin (OPN) was initially identified as a sialoglycoprotein in bone, but has since been found in various tissues. Although not much is known about its function, OPN seems to play an important role in inflammation and tissue repair. Recently, it was reported that OPN was upregulated in the activated microglia after focal brain ischemia, suggesting that OPN might play a role in wound healing after a focal stroke.

The focal mechanisms of the earthquakes occurred in 2001 and 2002 are analyzed to understand the regional stress and tectonics in and around Korean Peninsula. The forty -three fault plane solutions are derived using the polarities of first arrival P-waves recorded at KIGAM, Bmh and KEPRI stations. The result suggest that thrust motion with significant amount of strike slip component is dominant mode of faulting. The larger population of mechanism is characterized by WNW-ESE striking nodal planes. NE-SW direction is interpreted as dominant compressional axis orientation of stress field. These solutions are similar to those of medium size earthquakes studied previously, which is known as typical regional tectonic stress orientation in and around Korean Peninsula.

Carbon nanotubes (CNT) emitter has widely become an attractive mechanism that draws growing interests for cold cathode field emission. CNT yarns have demonstrated its potential as excellent field emitters. It was demonstrated that a small focal spot size was achieved by manipulating some electrical parameters, such as applied bias voltage at the mesh gate, and electrostatic focal lenses, geometrical parameters, such as axial distances of the anode, and the electrostatic focal lens from the cathode assembly, and the dimension of the opening of the electrostatic lens. Electrical-optics software was used to systematically investigate the behavior of the electron beam trajectory when the aforementioned variables were manipulated. The results of the experiment agree with the theoretical simulation results. Each variable has an individual effect on the electron beam focal spot size impinging on the target anode. An optimum condition of the parameters was obtained producing good quality of X-ray images. Also, MWCNT yarn was investigated for field emission characteristics and its contribution in the X-ray generation. The dry spinning method was used to fabricate MWCNT yarn from super MWCNTs, which was fabricated by MW-PECVD. The MWCNT yarn has a significant field emission capability in both diode and the triode X-ray generation structure compared to a MWCNT. The low-voltage-field emission of the MWCNT yarn can be attributed to the field enhancing effect of the yarn due to its shape and the contribution of the high-aspect-ratio nanotubes that protrude from the sides of the yarn. Observations of the use of filters on the development of X-ray images were also demonstrated. The amount of exposure time of the samples to the X-ray was also manipulated. The MWCNT yarn can be a good candidate for use in the low voltage field emission application of X-ray imaging.

The material removal mechanism in machining is significantly affected by the cutting edge geometry. Its effect becomes even more substantial when the depth of cut is relatively small as compared to the characteristic length which represents the shape and size of the cutting edge. Conventionally, radius or focal length has been employed as the characteristic length with the assumption that the shape of cutting edge is round or parabolic. However, in reality, there could be various ways to determine the radius or focal length even for the same tool edge profile, depending on the region to be considered as cutting edge in the measured profile and the constraints to be set in constructing the best fitted circle or parabola. In this regard, the present study proposes various models to determine the characteristic length in terms of radius or focal length. Their physical compatibility are validated by carrying out 2D orthogonal cutting experiments using inserts with a wide range of characteristic length ($30{\sim}180\;{\mu}m$ in terms of radius) and then by investigating the correlation between the characteristic length and the cutting forces. Such validation is based on the common belief that the larger the characteristic length is, the blunter the cutting edge is and the higher the cutting forces are. Interestingly, the results showed that the correlation is higher for the radius or focal length obtained with a constraint that the center of best fitted circle or the focus of the best fitted parabola should be on the bisectional line of the wedge angle of tool.

The importance of soft tissue response to implant abutments has become one of the major issues in current implant dentistry. To date, numerous studies have emphasized on maintaining connective tissue barriers in quantity, as well as in quality fir the long term success of dental implants. The cells mainly consisting the soft tissue around dental implants are fibroblasts and epithelial cells. The mechanism of the fibroblasts adhesions to certain substrata can be explained by the 'focal adhesion' theory. On the other hand, epithelial cells adhere tn the substratum via hemidesmosomes. The typical integrin-mediated adhesions of cells to certain matrix are called 'cell-matrix adhsions'. The focal adhesion complex of fibroblasts, in relation to the cell-matrix adhsions, consists of the extracellular matrix(ECM) such as fibronectin, the transmembrane proteins such as integrins, the intracellular cytoplasmic proteins such as vinculin, talin, and more, and the cytoskeletal structures such as filamentous actin and microtubules. The mechanosensory function of integrins and focal adhesion complexes are considered to play a major role in the cells adhesion, migration, proliferation, differentiation, division, and even apoptosis. The '3-D matrix adhesions' defined by Cukierman et al. makes a promising future for the verification of the actual process of the cell-matrix adhesions in vivo and can be applied to the field of implant dentistry in relation to obtaining strong soft tissue attachment to the implant abutments.

In and around the Korean Peninsula 22 intraplate earthquake mechanisms since 1936 were analyzed to understand the regional stress orientation and tectonics. These 22 earthquakes are largest ones in this century and may represent the characteristics of earthquake in the region. Focal mechanism of earthquakes in the region show predominant strike-slip faulting with small amount of thrust components. The average P-axis is almost horizontal ENE- WSW. Studied data are compared with neighboring intraplate region in order to understand the tectonic regime in far est Asia. In northeastern China strike-slip faulting is dominant and nearly horizontal average P-axis in ENE- WSW is very similar with the Korean Peninsula. On the other hand in the eastern part of East Sea thrust faulting is dominant and average P-axis is horizontal with ESE- WSW This indicate that not only the subducting Pacific Plate in east but also the indenting Indian Plate controls earthquake mechanism in the far east of the Eurasian Plate.
