  • The flutter derivatives of bridge decks can be efficiently identified using the experimentally and/or numerically coupled forced vibration method. This paper addresses the issue of inherent requirement for adopting different frequencies of three modes in this method. The aerostatic force components and the inertia of force and moment are mathematically proved to exert no influence on identification results if the signal length (t) is integer (n=1,2,3...) times of the least common multiple (T) of three modal periods. It is one important contribution to flutter derivatives identification theory and engineering practice in this study. Therefore, it is unnecessary to worry about the determination accuracy of aerostatic force and inertia of force and moment. The influences of signal length, amplitude, and frequency ratio on flutter derivative are thoroughly investigated using a bridge example. If the signal length t is too short, the extraction results may be completely wrong, and particular attention should be paid to this issue. The signal length t=nT ($n{\geq}5$) is strongly recommended for improving parameter identification accuracy. The proposed viewpoints and conclusions are of great significance for better understanding the essences of flutter derivative identification through coupled forced vibration method.

  • The objective of this work was to investigate the interference effects of two-parallel bridge decks on aerodynamic coefficients, vortex-induced vibration, flutter instability and flutter derivatives. The two bridges have significant difference in cross-sections, dynamic properties, and flutter speeds of each isolate bridge. The aerodynamic static tests and aeroelastic tests were performed in TU-AIT boundary layer wind tunnel in Thammasat University (Thailand) with sectional models in a 1:90 scale. Three configuration cases, including the new bridge stand-alone (case 1), the upstream new bridge and downstream existing bridge (case 2), and the downstream new bridge and the upstream existing bridge (case 3), were selected in this study. The covariance-driven stochastic subspace identification technique (SSI-COV) was applied to identify aerodynamic parameters (i.e., natural frequency, structural damping and state space matrix) of the decks. The results showed that, interference effects of two bridges decks on aerodynamic coefficients result in the slightly reduction of the drag coefficient of case 2 and 3 when compared with case 1. The two parallel configurations of the bridge result in vortex-induced vibrations (VIV) and significantly lower the flutter speed compared with the new bridge alone. The huge torsional motion from upstream new bridge (case 2) generated turbulent wakes flow and resulted in vertical aerodynamic damping H1* of existing bridge becomes zero at wind speed of 72.01 m/s. In this case, the downstream existing bridge was subjected to galloping oscillation induced by the turbulent wake of upstream new bridge. The new bridge also results in significant reduction of the flutter speed of existing bridge from the 128.29 m/s flutter speed of the isolated existing bridge to the 75.35 m/s flutter speed of downstream existing bridge.

  • The linear and nonlinear aeroelastic analyses of a flat plate wing with flaperon have been performed by using frequency-domain and time-domain analyses. Natural modes from free vibration analysis and a doublet-hybrid method (DHM) are used for the computation of subsonic unsteady aerodynamic forces. The flaperon hinge is represented by a free-play spring and is linearized by the described function method. The linear and nonlinear flutter analyses indicate that flapping mode of the flaperon, the hinge stiffness and free-play of hinge have significant effects on the aeroelastic characteristics. From the nonlinear flutter analysis, different modes like stable and unstable limit-cycle-oscillation are observed in same flutter velocity depending on initial conditions.

  • In this paper a dynamic behavior(natural frequency) of a cracked cantilever beam subjected to follower force is presented. In addition, an analysis of the flutter and buckling instability of a cracked cantilever beam subjected to a follower compressive load is presented. Based on the Euler-Bernouli beam theory, the equation of motion can be constructed by using the Lagrange's equation. The vibration analysis on such cracked beam is conducted to identify the critical follower force for flutter insstability based on the variation of the first two resonant frequencies of the beam. Besides, the effect of the crack's intensity and location on the flutter follower force is studied. The crack section is represented by a local flexibility matrix connecting two undamaged beam segments. The crack is assumed to be in the first mode of fracture and to be always opened during the vibrations.

  • A finite element aerodynamic model that can be used to analyse flutter instability of long span bridges in the time domain is presented. This approach adopts a simplified quasi-steady formulation of the wind forces neglecting the vortex shedding effects. The governing equations used are effective only for reduced velocities $V^*$ sufficiently great: this is generally acceptable for long-span suspension bridges and, then, the dependence of the wind forces expressions of the flutter derivatives can be neglected. The procedure describes the mechanical response in an accurate way, taking into account the non-linear geometry effects (large displacements and large strains) and considering also the compressed locked coil strands instability. The time-dependence of the inertia force due to fluid structure interaction is not considered. The numerical examples are performed on the three-dimensional finite element model of the Great Belt East Bridge (DK). A mode frequency analysis is carried out to validate the model and the results show good agreement with the experimental measurements of the full bridge aeroelastic model in the wind tunnel tests. Significant parameters affecting bridge response are introduced and accurately investigated.

  • Recent trends in information storage devices disk are the transition from CD drives to high density DVD drives, the development of writable disk drives and the appearance of several high-density portable disk drives. In some flexible disk drives, self-excited disk vibrations become severe as rotation speed increases near or above critical speed. Critical speeds of CD/DVD, ASMO and floppy disks are experimentally measured and compared with analytical predictions. Flutter instability caused by aero-induced disk vibration at high speeds are experimentally observed. In ASMO, three nodal-diameter mode experiences its flutter at 8750 rpm with the frequency lock-on phenomenon. The CD/DVD disk does not have the aero-induce flutter up to 14,000 rpm.

  • Flutter wind-tunnel test is an expensive and complicated process. Also, the test model may has discrepancy in the structural characteristics when compared to those of the real model. "Dry Wind-Tunnel" (DWT) is an innovative testing system which consists of the ground vibration test (GVT) hardware system and software which computationally can be operated and feedback in real-time to yield rapidly the unsteady aerodynamic forces. In this paper, we study on the aerodynamic forces of DWT system to feedback in time domain. The aerodynamic forces in the reduced-frequency domain are approximated by Minimum-state approximation. And we present a state-space equation of the aerodynamic forces. With the two simulation model, we compare the results of the flutter analysis.
