In order to examine the anticariogenic effect after fluoride varnish was applied to sound enamel and artificial caries enamel, anterior teeth of healthy cattle were used and divided into four groups such as group 1 (sound enamel), group 2 (application of fluoride varnish to sound enamel), group 3 (artificial caries enamel) and group 4 (application of fluoride varnish to artificial caries enamel). Remineralization on the surface of enamel and changes of crystalline structure after demineralization were observed by using a field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). Quantitative analysis of Ca and P was measured by using the energy dispersive X-ray spectrophotometer (EDS). The following conclusions were obtained: 1)Surface pattern of enamel was the roughest in group 3 due to the defects caused by porosity and microcracks. Group 4, group 1 and group 2 were followed in order; 2) It was found that pattern of crystalline structures in a group of application of fluoride varnish and a group of no application showed bigger change in artificial caries enamel than that in sound enamel. In other words, groups 4 and 1 showed a similar pattern; 3) The contents of Ca and P were higher in groups of application of fluoride varnish (group 2 and group 4) than in groups of no application of fluoride varnish (group 1 and group 3). Taken results of this study together, in the case of application of fluoride varnish, crystalline structure was changed by remineralization even in the sound enamel. In particular, porous structures showed a smooth and uniform pattern due to the recalcification in the artificial caries enamel. In addition, according to results of EDS analysis, the contents of Ca and P were increased and it had great anticariogenic effects which inhibit decalcification of sound enamel and artificial caries enamel.
Objectives : This study was carried out to investigate the caries resistant effect of fluoride by dental polishing prior to fluoride application in vitro. Methods : Artificial caries lesion was made on the surface of specimen enamel taken from cow's permanent cuspid on the part of labial surface after resin embedding and polishing. Artificial dental plaque was formed on the 72 dental specimen 25~45 VHN(Vickers Hardness Number) which were divided into three groups(fluoride varnish, APF gel, control) with dental polishing and without polishing respectively. Fluoride varnish and APF gel group with 20 second polishing or without polishing were immersed in the artificial saliva respectively. Control group with or without polishing were immersed in the artificial saliva. Results : 1. Significant difference was not found by fluoride varnish between polishing group and non polishing group (p>0.01). 1) polishing group. The changes of Vickers Hardness Number(VHN) were $14.49{\pm}13.73$. 2) non-polishing group. The changes of VHN were $11.67{\pm}5.39$. 2. Significant difference was not found by APF gel between polishing group and non polishing group (p>0.01). 1) polishing group. The changes of VHN were $8.48{\pm}8.37$. 2) non-polishing group. The changes of VHN were $5.32{\pm}2.59$. Conclusions : Showed no significant difference between polishing group and non-polishing group regardless of fluoride materials (fluoride varnish, APF gel).

Subjects of this study were : $FluoroDose^{(R)}$ (FD, Centrix Inc., USA), $Enamelast^{TM}$ (EL, Ultradent Product Inc., USA), $Clinpro^{TM}$ white varnish (CW, 3M ESPE, USA), $CavityShield^{TM}$ (CS, 3M ESPE, USA), V $varnish^{TM}$ (VV, Vericom, Korea), MI $varnish^{TM}$ (MI, GC, Japan). The amount of fluoride ion release was measured eight times during 168 hours to see change in accumulation with the course of time using a measuring instrument. And the remineralization rate was measured with Quantitative Light-induced Fluorescence (QLF). V $varnish^{TM}$ group and MI $varnish^{TM}$ group showed high remineralization rates with statistically significance while $CavityShield^{TM}$ group was the lowest rate of remineralization (p < 0.05). After that, several chosen samples were scanned through electron microscope (SEM). Demineralized enamel was observed as the number of enamel crystal was very small; enamel rods and crystals were highly protruding. Remineralized groups with fluoride varnishes show the decreasing tendency of the surface roughness compared to the demineralized enamel.
The purpose of this study was to fabricate a biocompatible fluoride varnish with sustained fluoride release, and to compare it with commercial fluoride varnishes. For the experimental fluoride varnish, bis-GMA (BG) or two types of rosin (KR-610: K0, KR-612: K2) were used as bases. Either ethyl acetate or ethanol was added as solvent and 5 wt% NaF was used. 5 mg of experimental F- varnishes and 2 commercial products, Cavity shield (CS) and Flor-opal (FO), were applied on a labial surface of bovine teeth ($10mm{\times}7mm$). The amount of fluoride release was measured at 1 hr, 2 hrs, 3 hrs, 4 hrs, 8 hrs, 12 hrs, 1 day, 3 days, 5 days, 10 days, 15 days, 20 days and 30 days. MTT test was done with diluted F- varnishes using ethanol. Statistical analysis was done with one-way ANOVA and Duncan multiple range test (${\alpha}=0.05$). BG showed the highest fluoride release at 1 hr (P<0.05), while that of K0 was highest at 2 hrs (P<0.05). From 1 day to 5 days, experimental fluoride varnishes showed higher fluoride release than the commercial products (P<0.05), and there were no significant differences after 5 days (P>0.05). For MTT test, K0 and FO showed higher cell viability than other experimental groups (P<0.05), with no significant differences with K2 (P>0.05). Considering the sustained fluoride release and cell viability of the experimental rosin-based fluoride varnishes compared with commercial products, it will be appropriate for clinical application.

The purpose of this study was to compare the remineralization effect of 38% silver diamine fluoride (SDF) and 5% sodium fluoride (NaF) varnish on artificially induced enamel caries. The present study standardized the physiochemical characteristics of the tooth structure using bovine teeth, realized the wash-off action of agents using a saliva, reproduced an environment similar to mouth through pH-cycling, and comparatively assessed the remineralization effect of 38% SDF and 5% NaF varnish in a non-destructive method using micro-CT. And the remineralized enamel surface structure was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-Ray spectroscopy (EDS). In both SDF and NaF varnish, mineral density (△Hounsfield unit value) and the volume of enamel restored to normal mineral density through remineralization gradually increased with time. And the SDF showed a much higher level of increase in mineral density at all depths and remineralized volume than NaF varnish. According to SEM analysis, the surface roughness decreased in the order of artificial saliva, NaF varnish and SDF. In addition, EDS analysis showed that silver ion was precipitated on the enamel surface in SDF group. In conclusion, SDF had a greater remineralization effect than NaF varnish on demineralized enamel.
In the prevention of root surface caries, antimicrobial therapy for the control of subgingival and supragingival plaque is seriously considered as a long term suppression of pathogenic microflora. Recently, varnishes containing antimicrobial agents have been developed to control the supragingival microflora. The purpose of this study was to determine the antimicrobial effects of 20% chlorhexidine varnish and 2.6% silane fluoride varnish with sealant. In clinical experiments, 12 subjects were selected from the periodontally treated patient and divided into 3 groups. After a dental prophylaxis, the subjects were treated with single application of placebo varnish (group I), 20% chlorhexidine varnish (group II), and 2.6% silane fluoride varnish (group III). Root surface plaque samples were taken before (baseline) and one, two, four, and 8 weeks after the treatments. Microbiological examinations of root surface plaque were performed with culture study and indirect immunoflorescence (I.I.F.) study, and immunological examination of gingival crevicular fluid antibody titers was performed with ELISA study. The results were as follows: 1. Pathogenic microflora on the root surface including S. mutans, S. sanguis, S. mitis, A. naeslundii, A. viscosus were 24 - 37% on I.I.F. study. 2. S. mutans, S. sanguis, S. mitis, A. naeslundii, A. viscosus of the root surface plaque was significantly reduced from 1 week to 8 weeks after antimicrobial varnish treatment, but showed generally increasing tendency in control group. 3. Gingival crevicular fluid antibody titers were significantly reduced from 1 or 2 weeks to 4 weeks after antimicrobial varnish treatment.

In the child, it is very important that he/she will have the ability to suppress aesthetic restorative materials of secondary caries. With the representative preventive material against caries, the importance of fluoride is more emphasized. This study examined the differences in fluoride release and re-uptake among some restorative materials, following a treatment of APF gel and fluoride varnish. The surface roughness was observed under scanning electron microscope. Studying this will provide for the research to find effective restorative materials and fluoride type in tooth caries prevention. It is applied from presence at a clinic that restorative materials are resin, flowable resin, compomer and glass ionomer. Fluoride release was measured at 24-hour intervals for 7 days, 3-day intervals from 8th to 38th day using an ion-selective electrode and analyzer. Then, the materials were treated with the fluoride gel and fluoride varnish respectively, fluoride release was measured and specimens were evaluated under scanning electron microscope for 4 weeks. It was concluded that 1. Fluoride was released for 38 days from restorative materials under 1 ppm in case of flowable resin, 1-2 ppm in compomer and 2-8 ppm in glass ionomer, a few of fluoride was released after 45 days 2. Fluoride has more releasing after application of APF gel than fluoride varnish. Fluoride re-uptake was observed under 0.6-0.2 ppm in fluoride varnish and 0.6-2.6 ppm in APF gel after starting the procedure one day(p<0.05). For the remaining 4 weeks, they demonstrated a similar release. 3. Specimens were evaluated under scanning electron microscope. Applied fluoride in the experimental group surface was rougher than the control group that did not receive fluoride application. Fluoride varnish group had a smoother surface than both the APF gel group and the varnish APF gel group that received a fluoride application.

Fluoride has been used widely for the prevention of dental caries. Many dental professionals applicated acidulated phosphate fluoride(APF) gel for the purpose of prevention of dental caries in recent years. However, the topical application of fluoride varnish is growing and getting much recognition in many parts of Europe and Scandinavia. The main purpose of this study was to compare the effect of fluoride varnish and acidulated phosphate fluoride gel on artificial caries lesion. The artificial caries lesion was caused on the sound bovine enamel and divided 60 specimens into three groups each containing twenty for the purpose of study. No application was done on group 1, which acted as control group. Group 2 was treated with the topical application of fluoride varnish and removed after 1 hour Group 3 was treated with APF gel and removed after a minute. The cycle of remineralization/demineralization went on in vitro and the microhardness was measured for the each group after 5 and 15days. The following results were obtained : 1. According to the results after 5 days, the microhardness of groups 2 and 3 were significantly higher than group 1, the control group(p<0.05) Similar results was also noticed after 15 days(p<0.05) 2. In comparison of microhardness between groups 2 and 3 after 5days, there were no significant differences between them. The results after 15 days was also similar 3. Much difference in microhardness wasn't present in groups 2 and 3 after 5 and 15days. However, the microhardness of the group 1 dropped significantly in the result of 15 days and 5 days(p<0.05).

It is well established that fluoride products play an important role in the prevention and remineralization of carious lesion. Fluoride varnish is a concentrated topical fluoride and varnishes adhere to tooth surface, permitting prolonged fluoride exposure and uptake. In this study, the artificial initial enamel caries was caused on the sound human enamel and divided 60 specimens into three groups. Group 1 and group 2 were treated with the topical application of fluoride varnish and stored in artificial saliva for 1 and 2 weeks. Group 3 was stored in artificial saliva for 2 weeks, which acted as control group. Changes in mineral contents were analysed with the confocal laser scanning microscope. The following results were obtained: 1. In group 1 and group 2, the total fluorescence of the lesion(TFL) was reduced in remineralized area compared to in demineralized area(p<0.05). 2. The total fluorescence of the lesion of remineralized area was more reduced in group 2 than in group 1(p<0.05). 3. The total fluorescence of the lesion was more reduced in group 2 than in control group(p<0.05). 4. Confocal laser scanning microscope can be used in quantitative analysis of remineralization by fluoride varnish.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of fluoride varnish on prevention of enamel demineralization. Eighty bovine enamel blocks were divided randomly into 4 groups of 20 specimens: Group I served as the control with no topical application of fluoride. Group II was treated with APF gel for 4 minutes. Group III was treated with Fluor $Protector^{(R)}$. Group IVV was treated with $CavityShield^{TM}$. After 24 hours of treatment, samples were brushed with a soft bristled tooth brush to stimulate normal mechanical wear of varnish. Early caries lesions were produced by placing each specimen into demineralization solution at pH 4.0 for 48 hours. Then the optical density of the lesions was measured by light fluorescence induced by plasma light and the surface microhardness were measured by the vicker's hardness test. The results were as follows: 1. The optical densities of group III, IV were significantly higher than that of group II, but no significant difference was noted between group III and IV. 2. The surface microhardness of group IV was the highest, followed by group III, II, and I(p<0.05). 3. There were no significant differences between group III and IV in optical density. However, the surface microhardness of group IV was significantly higher than that of group III. The results of present study indicate that the fluoride varnish is more effective than APF gel for prevention of dental caries.
