  • Due to the declining LED price and environment-friendly energy policies, CO2 emission reduction and energy-saving, the LED lighting industry is accelerating rapidly. In particular, the needs for LED lamp, replacing the existing fluorescent lamp without exchange luminaire or driver circuits, are also rapidly increasing. Therefore, replacement for T8 fluorescent lamp, LED T8 lamp was developed and standardized. However, except LED T8 lamps, other lamps' regulations or standards were not enacted. Also, the stability of fluorescent lamp substitutable LED lamp is low due to the difference in electrical characteristics and mismatch between the existing fluorescent lamp ballast and LED lamp. Therefore, many are struggling while developing fluorescent lamp substitutable LED lamp. In this paper describes the properties of existing fluorescent lamp ballasts and the considerations while developing fluorescent lamp substitutable LED lamp : demonstrating its validity by experiments the developed fluorescent lamp substitutable LED lamp prototype.

  • Rosen type piezoelectric transformer for LCD backlight operated at high voltage and low current, may not be sucessfully used for illuminating general fluorescent lamps because low voltage and high current are required. In this study, the piezoelectric transformer with width vibration mode operated at low voyage and high current was designed for the application of fluorescent lasso ballast. The step-up ratio and efficiency as a function of the load resistance in the piezoelectric transformer indicated that the transformer can be effectively used for the electronic ballast for low profile fluorescent lamp.

  • The properties of discharge, luminance, and spectroscopy are investigated in a longitudinal and transverse discharge fluorescent lamps with tube of outer diameter 4 mm. The sample lamps are prepared to be three kinds of gas composition such as mercury lamps of Ne(95%)+Ar(5%)+Hg(2 mg), the mercury-free lamps of Xe 100% and Ne+Xe(4%). The gas pressure is in the range of $5{\sim}300\;Torr$. In the mercury lamps, the longitudinal discharge having a positive column is high in luminance and efficiency, while the transverse discharge is no luminance at all. In the Xe-lamps, the transverse discharge shows relatively good in efficiency as compared with the longitudinal discharge which has a high discharge voltage and a low luminance and efficiency. In the transverse discharge of relatively high efficiency, a pure Xe(100%) gas discharge has a higher efficiency than the mixture gas of Ne+Xe(4%). Through these experiments, the properties of mercury and xenon lamps are verified. In the mercury lamps, the longitudinal discharge of tubular fluorescent lamps is high in luminance and efficiency, while the transverse discharge of flat panel fluorescent lamps are low in luminance efficiency. In the mercury-free lamps, the flat fluorescent lamps of transverse discharge having a high pressure ${\sim}100\;Torr$ with the pure Xe-gas are verified to be suggestable.

  • Cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFL) show complex characteristics, which make it difficult to drive them in parallel. In this paper, a multi-lamp driving scheme is proposed to drive multiple lamps for LCD back light to reduce output current unbalance. This propose system is composed of parallel CCFLs, series transformers. The driving system adopts only one backlight inverter to drive multi cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFL). Moreover the circuit introduces a multi-lamp driving transformer to reduce lamp-current imbalance. The validity of the proposed scheme is confirmed by the simulated and experimental results.

  • The Energy Efficiency Standards and Labelling Act, as amended by the Rational Energy Utilization Act, provides energy efficiency standards and labellings for six equipment categories(viz, refrigerators, air-conditioners, fluorescent lamps and ballasts, incandescent lamps, cars) authorizes the Ministry of Trade. Industry and Energy (MOTIE) to prescribe amended or new energy efficiency standards and labelling standards. This study was initiated by the KIER(Korea Institute of Energy Research) in 1992. KIER's assessment of the appliance energy efficiency standards is designed to evaluate their statistical and engineering analysis according to Korean Industrial Standards(KS). And to make didtinction between the poor efficiency and good efficiency models. 5 grades are classified depending on their tested energy efficiency. This year, based on our analysis, MOTIE mandated updated standards for refrigerators, air-conditioners, Incandescent lamps, and fluorescent lamps.

  • This paper has been studied the ballast for multiple lamps. Many fluorescent lamps are demanded in where industrial buildings and public buildings. Using the proposed ballast for multiple lamps, we can decrease the cost and the space for installing. Also in the paper, the protection circuit is introduced for over voltage and current. The general problem of the ballast for multiple lamps is to shut down the ballast circuit in the ease of one abnormal lamp. But the proposed method is not shut down all the circuit even if one lamp is in an abnormal condition.

  • Fluorescent induction lamps are assembly of a Low Pressure Mercury discharge vessel and an inductive power coupler. A vessel containing at least a Low Pressure Mercury vapor, which will be energized by means of the Inductive Coupler. The Ultra Violet radiation from the resulting discharge is converted by a layer of fluorescent material into visible light. The discharge vessel may have means of mechanical fixation to position it to the Inductive power coupler. The component to transform High Frequency electrical energy, by means of induction, in order to energize the Low Pressure Mercury in the discharge vessel. The component includes electrical connection. Fluorescent induction lamps don't have international standards yet. So we try to correspond Korea standards to international standards.

  • Hg-free fluorescent lamps were fabricated and electro-optical characterization were measured for using LCD backlight. PDP phosphors, nitro-cellulose and n-butyl acetate were mixed and coated uniformly in glass tube without stain. The glass tubes were sintered at $550^{\circ}C$ for 20 minutes, vacuumed to $10^{-6}$ torr and supplied discharge gas by using a gas mixture. After various experiment about phosphors thickness and inner diameter of glass tube, the appropriate phosphors thickness and inner diameter of glass tube were obtained. The luminance and luminous efficiency of manufactured fluorescent lamps with Ne+Xe discharge gas were $6,270cd/m^2$, 13 lm/W under 75 kHz sinusoidal wave voltage, respectively.

  • The effects of red, blue, and far-red light by illumination of light emitting diodes (LEDs) on growth, morphogenesis and eleutheroside contents of in vitro plantlets of Eleutherococcus senticosus were examined. As a control, plantlets were grown under a broad spectrum white fluorescent lamp (16/8 h illumination). The length of plantlets grown under the red/blue LEDs was taller than those under fluorescent lamps. Leaf area, root length and fresh weight of plantlets were highest under blue light compared to other kinds of light sources. Chlorophyll contents in plantlets grown under fluorescent lamps were higher than those in plantlets grown under LED illumination. Production of eleuthroside B and E in plantlets was highest under blue LED. However, production of eleuthroside E1 was highest under fluorescent lamps. These results suggest that plant growth and eleuthroside accumulation can be controlled by wave length of light under LED illumination system.
