  • The model and analytical method for solving the problem of coupled fluid flow in the reservoir/well system is presented. The 3-D drainage area is composed of three connected media: the tubing, the annuli as a super conducting collector, and the reservoir itself. To couple these three types of fluid flows a non-overlapping Dirichlet-Neumann domain decomposition method is developed. The method allows us to apply an analytical hybrid simulator for accurate evaluation of the impact of main geometrical and hydrodynamic parameters of the 3-D system on the pressure drop along the horizontal well and its production index.

  • The present study is concerned with the numerical analysis of the sloshing impact pressure of the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) carriers in rough sea. The reliable predictions of the both random tank motions in irregular waves and violent fluid flow in the LNG tanks are required for practical sloshing analysis procedure of LNG carriers. The three-dimensional numerical model adopting SOLA-VOF scheme is used to predict violent free surface movements of LNG tank in irregular motions. For accurate input motion of tank, a three-dimensional panel method program called SSMP (Samsung Ship Motion Program) is applied for seakeeping analysis. Comparison studies of sloshing analysis are carried out for No.2 tank of 138K and 205K LNG carriers to verify the safety of the LNG containment system of the proposed 205K large LNG carrier.

  • The noise and vibration sources of rotary compressor for room air-conditioner are pressure pulsation of compression process, cavity resonance of inner space, structural radiation noise of shell and impact noise of discharge valve. Among them, pressure pulsation is very important noise and vibration source. Because it transferred various kinds of noise and vibration like as mentioned above. In this reason, muffler and resonator are used in order to absorb and remove these noises. But an analytical prediction using acoustic analysis does not coincident with the experimental result. The difference between analysis and actual state is due to the assumption of analysis. This paper covered with new concept of muffler design based on the turbulence kinetic energy of flow by using CFD. From this analysis, it is possible to decide the best position of discharge port of muffler. Therefore $2{\sim}3dB$ noise reduction effect is acquired in rotary compressor of 5000 BTU grade. Also new approach of resonator design is suggested. From this study, the characteristics of resonator and surge hole (a kind of resonator without pipe length) are identified. The former is useful for pure tone noise (narrow frequency band), and the latter is effective for broad frequency band. This paper shows that it is very available to use 3 dimensional analysis of resonator in order to predict more exact tuning frequency. The result is proved by a lot of experiments. From combination of fluid analysis and acoustic analysis, up stream position is effective location of resonator concerning turbulence motion of fluid.

  • An accurate prediction of the pressure drop along the flow paths is crucial in the design of advanced passive systems cooled by heavy liquid metal coolants. To date, a generic pressure drop correlation over spacer grids by Rehme has been applied extensively, which was obtained from substantial experimental data with multiple types of components. However, a few experimental studies have reported that the correlation may give large discrepancies. To provide a more reliable correlation for ring-type spacer grids, the current numerical study aims at figuring out the most critical factor among four hypothetical parameters, namely the flow area blockage ratio, number of fuel rods, type of fluid, and thickness of the spacer grid in the flow direction. Through a set of computational fluid dynamics simulations, we observed that the flow area blockage ratio dominantly influences the pressure loss characteristics, and thus its dependence should be more emphasized, whereas the other parameters have little impact. Hence, we suggest a new correlation for the drag coefficient as CB = Cν,m2.7, where Cν,m is formulated by a nonlinear fit of simulation data such that Cν,m = -11.33 ln(0.02 ln(Reb)).

  • Some propellants in a liquid rocket engine are burned in the pre-burner of a staged combustion cycle engine, resulting hot gas drives the turbine. The burned gas passing through the turbine is supplied to the combustor at high temperature and pressure. The form of the gas can be fuel rich or oxidizer rich dependent upon the mixture ratio or the engine scheme. When the cycle works at oxidizer-rich condition, the metal pipes composing the engine can be ignited or even exploded by an impact of very a small particle. In this study, we developed the powder combination and processes for an anti-oxidation coating through the analysis of various coating materials.

  • Responding to the increasing demand for research on seismic resistance of structures triggered by a large-scale earthquake in Korea, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety revised the typical application of the existing seismic design standards with the national seismic performance target enhanced. Therefore, in this paper, the dam body of the aged Test-Bed and the penstock with fluid were modeled by the three-dimensional finite element method by introducing several variables. The current seismic design standard law confirmed the safety of the dam structure and penstock against seismic waves. As a result of the 3D finite element analysis, the stress change due to the water impact of the penstock was minimal, and it was confirmed that the effect of the hydraulic pressure was more significant than the water impact in the earthquake situation. When the hydrostatic pressure is in the form of SPH, it was analyzed that the motion of the fluid and the location of stress caused by the earthquake can be effectively represented, and it will be easier to analyze the weak part. As a result of the analysis, which considers penstock's corrosion, the degree of stress dispersion gets smaller because the penstock is embedded in the body. The stress result is minimal, less than 1% of the yield stress of the steel. In addition, although there is a possibility of micro-tensile cracks occurring in the inlet of the dam, it has not been shown to have a significant effect on the stress increa.

  • A ball strainer screen module, which is used for a condenser tube cleaning system, is a critical mechanical component for maintaining condenser cleanliness. Despite of this importance, not many research have been focused on this module because of its relatively low usage. Employing CFD, this study examines the implication of fluid velocity change and blockage ratio on the ball strainer screen velocity and the static pressure distribution. Through this study, the impact of blockage in the space between ball strainer screen modules is verified. Also, it is found that the ranges of non-dimensional velocity distribution and static pressure distribution decrease as blockage ratio becomes smaller.

  • Agricultural tractors require frequent shifting to improve operation efficiency, and PST (Powershift Transmission) is considered as a suitable transmission. However, due to the inherent characteristics of the PST, shocks arise during shifting, which imparts a negative effect on the operator. Therefore, in order to improve the transmission performance of the tractor PST, researches on various methods including the hydraulic system circuit, the engine input speed control, and the mechanical system of the transmission are steadily being conducted. In this study, in order to reduce the impact of PST on a shift based on SimulationX software, we analyzed the characteristics of the input signal of PCV (Pressure Control Valve) through sensitivity analysis and verified the simulation model through actual vehicle test. Optimization was performed for minimizing the shift shock for some of the parameters of the input signal at constant temperature and RPM conditions.

  • A cross-flow fan is widely used on many industrial fields: mining industry, automobile and home appliances, etc. The design point of the cross-flow fan is generally based on the region within low static pressure and high flow rate. It relatively makes high dynamic pressure at low speed because a working fluid passes through an impeller blade twice. However, it has low static pressure efficiency between 30% and 40% because of relative high impact loss. Recently, in the air-conditioning systems, the operating behaviors at the off-design points are highly regarded to broaden the application area for various air-cooling loads. Especially, at the lower flow rate, there exists a rapid pressure head reduction, a noise increase and an irregular flow field against a rearguider as a scroll of centrifugal fan. Numerical analyses are carried out for investigating the flow characteristics in a cross-flow fan including the impeller, the rearguider and the stabilizer. Especially, various types of rearguiders are estimated by numerical and experimental methods to insure the stable operation in the region of lower flow rate. Numerical domains are discretized by hexahedral cells. Three-dimensional, unsteady governing equations are solved using FVM, PISO algorithm, sliding grid system and standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. ASHRAE standard fan tester is also used to estimate the performance of the modeled crossflow fan.
