  • In the present work, the interaction analysis between tsunami bore and onshore bridge is approached by a numerical method, where the tsunami bore is generated by difference of upstream side and downstream side water levels. Numerical simulation in this paper was carried out by TWOPM-3D(three-dimensional one-field model for immiscible two-phase flows), which is based on Navier-Stokes solver. In order to verify the applicability of force acting on an onshore bridge, numerical results and experimental results were compared and analyzed. From this, we discussed the characteristics of horizontal force and vertical force(uplift force and downward force) changes including water level and velocity change due to the tsunami bore strength, water depth, onshore bridge form and number of girder. Furthermore, It was revealed that the entrained air in the fluid flow highly affected the vertical force.

  • Herein, a theoretical method based on the catenary model Is applied to obtain the tension and drag forces acting on the trash curtain which is deployed at river for the prevention of floating debris inflow into the ocean. Under the assumption that fluid drag is perpendicular to the trash curtain, the tension and drag forces are uniform along the trash curtain. As a numerical model, the trash curtain is moored both symmetrically and asymmetrically with respect to the flow. The tension and drag forces on the trash curtain are investigated according to the change of Bap ratio and inclined angle of the trash curtain. Numerical results show that tension parameter is increased as the gap ratio is increased. It is found that tension parameter is reduced as the inclined angle is increased in the case of asymmetric deployment. The numerical model is applied to the specific problem for the trash curtain (200m) deployed at the Tancheon on the Han river. The maximum inflow velocity that anchor system can endure is 2m/sec.

  • The effects of molecular weight (MW) and concentration on the rheological properties of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) solutions in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) were investigated at $30^{\circ}C$. Ubbelohde viscometer and rotational rheometer were employed for dilute and concentrated regime, respectively. In the dilute regime, the Mark-Houwink exponent ($\alpha$) of the solutions determined from three different MWs proved 0.73. The critical concentration (C*), in which the entanglement and overlap of polymer molecules began to take place, decreased with increasing the MW of PVA. Huggins constant ($K_H$) values ranged from 0.33 to 0.45 over the MW examined. In the log-log plot of $\eta_{sp}$ versus [$\eta$]C, the PVA with higher degree of polymerization (DP) gave a greater slope exhibiting the inflection point in the vicinity of C*. In the dynamic viscosity ($\eta'$) curve, the PVA solutions of DP 1700 presented Newtonian fluid behavior over most of the frequency range examined. However, the lower Newtonian flow region reduced with increasing the DP. As the PVA concentration increased, $\eta'$ was increased and the onset shear rate for pseudoplasticity was decreased. In the Cole-Cole plot, PVA solutions showed almost a single master curve in a slope of ca. 1.65 regardless of the DP. However, the increase of the concentration from 8 to 12 wt% for PVA solutions of DP 5000 decreased the slope from 1.73 to 1.57. In the tan $\delta$ curve, the onset frequency for sol-gel transition was shifted from 154 to 92 rad/s with increasing the DP from 3300 to 5000 and from 192 to 46 rad/s with increasing the concentration from 8 to 12 wt%. In addition, longer relaxation time ($\lambda$) was observed with increasing the DP and concentration.

  • Background: Heat recovery is one of the prominent ways to save a considerable amount of conventional fossil fuel and minimize its adverse effects on the environment. The rotary heat exchanger is one of the most effective and efficient devices for heat recovery or heat exchanging purposes. It is a regenerative type of heat exchanger, which has been studied and used for many heat recovery purposes. However, regenerative thermal wheels have been mostly used as heat recovery systems in buildings. For modeling a rotary regenerator, it is very important to numerically consider all the factors involved, such as effectiveness, rotational speed, geometrical size and shape, and pressure drop (${\Delta}p$). In recent times, several researchers have actively studied the rotary heat exchangers, both theoretically and experimentally. Reviews: In this paper different advances in the numerical modeling of regenerative rotary heat exchangers in relation to fluid flow and heat transfer have been discussed. Researchers have indicated that the effectiveness of the regenerative rotary heat exchanger depends on various factors including, among many others, rotational speed, rotational period and combustion power. It is reported that with the increase of periodic rotation the deviation of theoretical results from the experimental result increases. The available literature indicates that regenerative heat exchangers are having relatively more effectiveness (60-80%), compared to other heat exchangers. It is also observed that the finite difference method and finite volume methods are mostly used for discretizing the heat transfer governing equations, under some assumptions. Research also indicates that for the effectiveness calculation the ${\varepsilon}-NTU$ method is the most popular and convenient.

  • Health effects associated with metal working fluid (MWF) exposures include dermatitis, respiratory disease, hypersensitive pneumonitis, and asthma. Frequently, occupational exposures to MWFs are controlled by ventilating an enclosure with an air cleaning unit that includes a fan preceded by various kinds of filtration. There are several kinds of air cleaning units used in machining centers. But the associated troubles have hindered from efficiently using these devices. The main problem is the relatively short period of filter replacement. The reason is that the air cleaning units usually do not have the de-oiling systems, thus leading the earlier clogging of filters and reducing the flow rate of hood. Thus, the first stage of study was conducted to overcome this problem by developing the new oil mist collector equipped with the easy de-oiling system. The principle of de-oiling is that the centrifugal force generated by spinning the drum covered by filter fabric separates oils from the filter fabric. It would be very similar to the spin-dry laundry. By adopting this de-oiling technique, the problems associated with the conventional oil mist collectors could be solved. Several tests/analyses were performed to make the lab-scale oil mist collector. The collection efficiencies and the de-oiling efficiencies of commercially available filter fabrics were tested. Subsequently, the endurance test were conducted by observing SEM photos of filter fabrics and measuring tensile strength/expansion coefficient after spinning the filter drum for 20 minutes at the different rotation speeds. By doing these experiments, the most appropriate filter fabric and rotation speed/duration were selected. Finally, the new oil mist collector was designed. In the near future, this device must be tested in the real machining center.

  • This study investigated spraying factors applicable to stripper usage. Cyclodextrine, as environment-friendly material, was included in the stripper composition. An efficient spray technology was applied for the Photoresist strip. For industrial applications, stripping requires a temperature below $50^{\circ}C$, a strip time within 50 s, and chemically stable activation. Spraying factors were organized considering many conditions-orifice diameter, working pressure (inlet speed), spray distance, and spray angle. For commercial practicability, the flow rate was limited to 3 L/min. The nozzle parameters were nozzle orifice diameter of 1.8-2.2 mm, spray distance of 40-60 mm, and injection speed of 0.7-1.2 m/s. Through the thermal spray movement of the fluid, the thermal boundary layer for a chemical reaction just above the ITO-glass surface and momentum region for sufficient agitation (above 4 m/s) was achieved.

  • Sales of commercial-type cooling fans intended for application in military electronics are often discontinued during equipment production. This results in requirements for alternative fan selection as well as equipment performance and reliability tests, such as high-temperature operation testing. This study deals with alternative fan selection and verification methods that can be used during the production process. First, an alternative fan was selected by calculating the flow and pressure required to effectively cool the equipment, then the feasibility of the selected fan was verified using a reliable CFD heat dissipation analysis model. Following this, a high-temperature operation test was performed using the alternative fan in the equipment. Results demonstrated that the equipment satisfied its required function in a high-temperature environment, and the main parts as well as internal air temperature were found to be thermally stable.

  • Powder Injection Molding(PM) is an advanced and complicated technology for manufacturing ceramic or metal products making use of a conventional injection molding process, which is generally used for plastic products. Among many technologies involved in the successful PIM, injection molding process is one of the key steps to form a desired shape out of powder/binder mixtures. Thus, it is of great importance to have a numerical tool to predict the powder injection molding filling process. In this regard, a finite element analysis system has been developed for numerical simulations of filling process of powder injection molding. Powder/polymer mixtures during the filling pro cess of injection molding can be rheologically characterized as Non-Newtonian fluids with a so called yield phenomena and have a peculiar feature of apparent slip phenomena on the wall boundaries surrounding mold cavity. Therefore, in the present study, a physical modeling of the filling process of powder/polymer mixtures was developed to take into account both the yield stress and slip phenomena and a finite element formulation was developed accordingly. The numerical analysis scheme for filling simulation is accomplished by combining a finite element method with control volume technique to simulate the movement of flow front and a finite difference method to calculate the temperature distribution. The present study presents the modeling, numerical scheme and some numerical analysis results showing the effect of the yield stress and slip phenomena.

  • Counter balance valve is used as one part of hydraulic motor brake system. The function of this valve is to protect over-run or free falling of inertia load. But occasionally the brake system with counter balance valve makes some undesirable problems such as pressure surges or vibrations. These problems may hurt system safety and driver's conformability. Nevertheless, studies on dynamic characteristics of hydraulic system including counter balance valve are very rare, so further accumulation of research results are required. In this study, for the purpose of easy estimation about dynamic characteristics of hydraulic system including counter balance valve, precise formulation describing fluid dynamics and valve dynamics under various boundary conditions were made. The equations obtained in the preceding process include some parameters that must be got experimentally. Flow coefficients of valve and choke are the most significant ones among the parameters. So these parameters are obtained experimentally in this study, and experimental equations obtained from the experimental data were used for numerical calculation. The equations were analysed by numerical integration using Runge-Kutta method, because the equations contain various nonlinear terms. From the numerical analysis, it was verified that the dynamic response of counter balance valve and pressure variation at each elements can be estimated very easily. So the analysing method developed in this study enabled very easy estimating the relation between the performances of counter balance valve and various physical parameters related to the valve. Conclusively, it is said that the results obtained in this study can be used very usefully to develop a new type counter balance valve or to apply the valve to actual hydraulic system for various industrial equipments.

  • Fire scenarios in a space $20.0m\;\times\;4.0m$ floor and 3.0m high were simulated by using computational fluid dynamics program (FDS 4.0.3) to investigate the effect of the combined operation of both sprinkler and vent systems, which are installed for cooling and blocking smoke which propagates beneath the ceiling of a horizontal corridor, on the temperature and smoke density of it. It was shown that the combined operation both sprinkler and vent systems was more effective than each operation for cooling and blocking smoke, the number of operating sprinklers was two because of corner effect of wall, and over-installed sprinklers deteriorated the effect of cooling and blocking smoke. This study showed that the case of two sprinklers and vent flow rate $3.0m^3/s$ in fire scenario was the most effective for cooling and blocking smoke. It was confirmed that the smoke downdrag occurs in operating sprinkler system, and the more smoke droplets produced by increasing fire size, the greater smoke downdrag occurred.
