Drag reduction in polymer solutions is the phenomenon where by extremely dilute solutions of high molecular weight polymers exhibit frictional resistance to flow much lower than the pure solvent. This effect, largely unexplained as yet, has attracted the attention of polymer scientists and fluid flow specialists. Although applications are beginning to appear, the principle interest to data has been in attempting to relate the effect to the fluid mechanics of turbulent flow. Drag reduction in two phase flow can be applied to the transport of crude oil, phase change system such as chemical reactor, and pool and boiling flow. But the research on drag reduction in two phase flow is not intensively investigated. Therefore, experimental investigations have been carried out to analyze the drag reduction produced by polymer addition in the single phase and two phase flow system. The objectives of the proposed investigation are primarily in identifying and developing high performance polymer additives for fluid transportations with the benefits of turbulent drag. Also we want to is to evaluate the drag reduction in horizontal flow by measuring pressure drop and mean velocity. Experimental results show higher drag reduction using co - polymer(A611P) then using polyacrylamide (PAAM) and faster degradation using PAAM than using A611P under the same superficial velocity.

An analytical solution for a vertically stratified viscous flow in a microchannel with a rectangular cross-section is constructed, assuming fully developed laminar flow where the interfaces between the fluid layers are flat. Although the solution is for n-layer flow, restricted results to symmetrical three-layer flow are presented to investigate the effects of the viscosity and thickness ratios of the fluid layers and the aspect ratio of the microchannel on the flow field. Relations between the flow rate and thickness ratios of the fluid layers with varying viscosity distributions are found, considering the cross -sectional velocity profiles which vary noticeably with the three parameters and differ significantly from the velocity profiles of the flow between infinite parallel plates. Interfacial instability induced by the viscosity stratification in the microchannel is discussed referring to previous studies on the instability analysis for plane multilayer flow. Exact solution derived in the present study can be used for examining a diffusion process and three -dimensional stability analysis. More works are needed to formulate the equations including the effects of interfacial' tension between immiscible liquids and surface wettability which are important in microscale transport phenomena.
The Characteristics of heat transport in the heat pipe with a double vapor path and different kinds of the working fluid were investigated experimentally. The Experiment was carried out with acetone/ethanol. ethanol/ethanol. and in the aluminium container of the double vapor path. Performance measurements can be operated at the high level by 24000 w/m2 heat flux in the 1000mm evaporator. They are each estimated at the high temperature and experimentally reviewed the characteric of the heat rejection. The results shew that they are stably operated under each condition and the fluid was complemented each other at the fluid's experiment and brought about the extention of operating temperature. In this study, The reliable basic data obtained by the teste in the heat pipe with a double vapor path can be used for thermal design, manufacture, and production etc.

This study deals with fluid flow and heat transfer around a module cooled by forced air flow generated by a piezoelectric(PZT) fan in an enclosure. The fluid flows were generated by a flexible PZT fan which deflects inside a fluid transport system of comparatively simple structure mounted on a PCB in an enclosure($270\times260\times90mm^3$). Input voltages of 30V and 40V, and a resonance frequency of 28Hz were used to vibrate the cooling fan. Input power to the module was 4W. The height in an enclosure was changed 23$\sim$43mm. The fluid flow around the module was visualized by using PIV system. The temperature distributions around a heated module were visualized by using liquid crystal film. As the height in an enclosure and the input voltage of PZT fan increased, the cooling effect of module using a PZT fan increased. We found that the flow type was T- or Y-shape and the cooling effect was increased by the wake generated by a PZT fan.
Heat pipes are considered to be promising candidates to enhance the heat transport capability of evacuated solar collectors in a wide temperature range. The working fluid must be selected properly considering various operating conditions of heat pipes for medium-high temperature range to avoid dry-out, local overheating, and frozen failure. The advantage of using binary mixture as heat pipe working fluid is that it can extend operating temperature range of the system as it can overcome operating temperature limit of a single fluid. Various operating temperature ranges were imposed in the experiments to simulate the actual operation of solar collectors using water-ethanol binary mixture. Tests were conducted for the coolant temperature range of -10$^{\circ}C$ to 120$^{\circ}C$, and mixing ratio range was from 0 to 1 based on mass fraction.

This paper presents a high-efficiency design technique for developing the serialized models of a single-channel pump based on the diameter, flow rate and head as the main performance parameters. The variation in pump performance by changing of the single-channel pump geometry was predicted based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Numerical analysis was conducted by solving three-dimensional steady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with the shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model. The tendencies of the hydraulic performance depending on the pump geometry scale were analyzed with the fixed rotational speed. These performances were expressed and evaluated as the functionalization for designing the serialized models of a single-channel pump in this work.

As a single-channel pump is used for wastewater treatment, this particular pump type can prevent performance reduction or damage caused by foreign substances. However, the design methods for single-channel pumps are different and more difficult than those for general pumps. In this study, a design optimization method to improve the hydrodynamic performance of a single-channel pump impeller is implemented. Numerical analysis was carried out by solving three-dimensional steady-state incompressible Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations using the shear stress transport turbulence model. As a state-of-the-art impeller design method, two design variables related to controlling the internal cross-sectional flow area of a single-channel pump impeller were selected for optimization. Efficiency was used as the objective function and was numerically assessed at twelve design points selected by Latin hypercube sampling in the design space. An optimization process based on a radial basis neural network model was conducted systematically, and the performance of the optimum model was finally evaluated through an experimental test. Consequently, the optimum model showed improved performance compared with the base model, and the unstable flow components previously observed in the base model were suppressed remarkably well.

A sediment transport calculation considering cohesive force is proposed to deal with the transport phenomena of cohesive sediment. In the proposed calculation, each sand particle is assumed to be surrounded by a thin layer of mud. The critical Shields parameter and bed-load sediment transport rate are modified to include the cohesive force acting on the sand particle. The proposed calculation is incorporated into a two-way coupled fluid-structure-sediment interaction model, and applied to wave-induced topographic change of artificial shallows. Numerical results show that an increase in the content ratio of the mud, cohesive resistance force per unit surface area and water content cause increases in the critical Shields parameter and decreases in the bed-load sediment transport rate, reducing the topographic change of the shallow without changing its trend. This suggests that mixing mud in the pores of the sand particles can reduce the topographic change of shallows.

Taurine, a ${\beta}-amino$ acid, plays an important role as a neuromodulator and is necessary for the normal development of the brain. Since de novo synthesis of taurine in the brain is minimal and in vivo studies suggest that taurine dose not cross the blood-brain barrier, we examined whether the choroid plexus, the blood-cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) barrier, plays a role in taurine transport in the central nervous system. The uptake of $[^3H]-taurine$ into ATP depleted choroid plexus from rabbit was substantially greater in the presence of an inwardly directed $Na^+$ gradient taurine accumulation was negligible. A transient in side-negative potential gradient enhanced the $Na^+-driven$ uptake of taurine into the tissue slices, suggesting that the transport process is electrogenic, $Na^+-driven$ taurine uptake was saturable with an estimated $V_{max}$ of $111\;{\pm}\;20.2\;nmole/g/15\;min$ and a $K_M\;of\;99.8{\pm}29.9\;{\mu}M$. The estimated coupling ratio of $Na^+$ and taurine was $1.80\;{\pm}\;0.122.$$Na^+-dependent$ taurine uptake was significantly inhibited by ${\beta}-amino$ acids, but not by ${\alpha}-amino$ acids, indicating that the transporter is selective for ${\beta}-amino$ acids. Since it is known that the physiological concentration of taurine in the CSF is lower than that in the plasma, the active transport system we characterized may face the brush border (i.e., CSF facing) side of the choroid plexus and actively transport taurine out of the CSF. Therefore, we examined in vivo elimination of taurine from the CSF in the rat to determine whether elimination kinetics of taurine from the CSF is consistent with the in vitro study. Using a stereotaxic device, cannulaes were placed into the lateral ventricle and the cisterna magna of the rat. Radio-labelled taurine and inulin (a marker of CSF flow) were injected into the lateral ventricle, and the concentrations of the labelled compounds in the CSF were monitored for upto 3 hrs in the cisterna magna. The apparent clearance of taurine from CSF was greater than the estimated CSF flow (p<0.005) indicating that there is a clearance process in addition to the CSF flow. Taurine distribution into the choroid plexus was at least 10 fold higher than that found in other brain areas (e. g., cerebellum, olfactory bulb and cortex). When unlabelled taurine was co-administered with radio-labelled taurine, the apparent clearance of taurine was reduced (p<0.0l), suggesting a saturable disposition of taurine from CSF. Distribution of taurine into the choroid plexus, cerebellum, olfactory bulb and cortex was similarly diminished, indicating that the saturable uptake of taurine into these tissues is responsible for the non-linear disposition. A pharmacokinetic model involving first order elimination and saturable distribution described these data adequately. The Michaelis-Menten rate constant estimated from in vivo elimination study is similar to that obtained in the in vitro uptake experiment. Collectively, our results demonstrate that taurine is transported in the choroid plexus via a $Na^+-dependent,saturable$ and apparently ${\beta}-amino$ acid selective mechanism. This process may be functionally relevant to taurine homeostasis in the brain.

The article is aiming to investigate the thermal-fluidic characteristics of magnetic fluid in a cavity using GSMAC (generalized-simplified marker and cell method). The transport equations of the magnetic fluid are including the continuity equation, momentum equation and energy equation for natural convection and Maxwell equation and magnetization equation of magnetite nano-sized particles motion. In addition, the heat transfer characteristics such as temperatures and Nusselt numbers and flow characteristics such as streamlines and isotherms of the magnetic fluid were analyzed with the intensity and direction of the magnetic fields. As a result, the thermal-fluidic characteristics of the magnetic fluid in a cavity were could be controlled by the intensity and direction of the magnetic fields.
