  • As a basic study on the fluid-structure interaction of the shell structure, a theoretical formulation has been suggested on the free vibration of a thin-walled conical frustum shell filled with an ideal fluid, where the shell is assumed to be fixed at both ends. The motion of fluid coupled with the shell is determined by means of the velocity potential flow theory. In order to calculate the normalized natural frequencies that represent the fluid effect on a fluid-coupled system, finite element analyses for a fluid-filled conical frustum shell are carried out. Also, the effect of apex angle on the frequencies is investigated.

  • Recently, offshore structures for eco-friendly energy, such as wind and solar power, have been developed to address the problem of insufficient land space; in the case of energy generation, they are designed on a considerable scale. Therefore, the scalability of offshore structures is crucial. The Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering (KRISO) developed multi-linked floating offshore structures composed of floating bodies and connection beams for floating photovoltaic systems. Large-scale floating photovoltaic systems are mainly designed in a manner that expands through the connection between modules and demonstrates a difference in structural response with connection conditions. A fluid-structure coupled analysis was performed for the multi-linked floating offshore structures. First, the wave load acting on the multi-linked offshore floating structures was calculated through wave load analysis for various wave load conditions. The response amplitude operators (RAOs) for the motions and structural response of the unit structure were calculated by performing finite element analysis. The effects of connection conditions were analyzed through comparative studies of RAOs and the response's maximum magnitude and occurrence location. Hence, comparing the cases of a hinge connection affecting heave and pitch motions and a fixed connection, the maximum bending stress of the structure decreased by approximately 2.5 times, while the mooring tension increased by approximately 20%, confirmed to be the largest change in bending stress and mooring tension compared to fixed connection. Therefore, the change in structural response according to connection condition makes it possible to design a higher structural safety of the structural member through the hinge connection in the construction of a large-scale multi-linked floating offshore structure for large-scale photovoltaic systems in which some unit structures are connected. However, considering the tension of the mooring line increases, a safety evaluation of the mooring line must be performed.

  • In this paper, behavior of rectangular storage structures under earthquake loadings are investigated. Linear sloshing is assumed in this study. The effect of the wall flexibility is considered. Eulerian and lagrangian approaches are presented. The Eulerian approach is carried out by solving the boundary value problem for the fluid motion. In the lagrangian approach, the fluid as well as the storage structure is modelled by the finite element method. The fluid region is discretized by using fluid elements. The (1 $\times$ 1)-reduced integration is carried out for constructing the stiffness matrices of the fluid elements. Seismic analysis of the coupled system is carried out by the response spectra method. The numerical results show that the fluid forces on the wall obtained by two approaches are in good agreements. By including the effect of the wall flexibility, the forces due to fluid motion can be increased very significantly.

  • A coupled variational equation for fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems is derived from a steady state Navier-Stokes equation for incompressible Newtonian fluid and an equilibrium equation for geometrically nonlinear structures. For a fully coupled FSI formulation, between fluid and structures, a traction continuity condition is considered at interfaces where a no-slip condition is imposed. Under total Lagrange formulation in the structural domain, finite rotations are well described by using the second Piola-Kirchhoff stress and Green-Lagrange strain tensors. An adjoint shape design sensitivity analysis (DSA) method based on material derivative approach is applied to the FSI problem to develop a shape design optimization method. Demonstrating some numerical examples, the accuracy and efficiency of the developed DSA method is verified in comparison with finite difference sensitivity. Also, for the FSI problems, a shape design optimization is performed to obtain a maximal stiffness structure satisfying an allowable volume constraint.

  • In this study, a comparison study of flutter analysis for the AGARD 445.6 wing with wind turnnel test data has been conducted in the subsonic, transonic and supersonic flow regions. Nonlinear aeroelastic using FSIPRO3D which is a generalized user-friendly fluid-structure analyses have been conducted for a 3D wing configuration considering shockwave and turbulent viscosity effects. The developed fluid-structure coupled analysis system is applied for aeroelastic computations combining computational structure dynamics(CSD), finite element method(FEM) and computations fluid dynamics(CFD) in the time domain. MSC/NASTRAN is used for the vibration analysis of a wing model, and then the result is applied to the FSIPRO3D module. the results for dynamic aeroelastic response using different turbulent models are presented for several Mach numbers. Calculated flutter boundary are compared with the wind-tunnel experimental and the results show very good agreements.

  • A finite element vibration analysis of thin-walled cylindrical shells conveying fluid with uniform velocity is presented. The dynamic behavior of thin-walled shell is based on the Sanders' theory and the fluid in cylindrical shell is considered as inviscid and incompressible so that it satisfies the Laplace's equation. A beam-like shell element is used to reduce the number of degrees-of-freedom by restricting to the circumferential modes of cylindrical shell. An estimation of frequency response function of the pipe considering of the coupled effects of the internal fluid is presented. A dynamic coupling condition of the interface between the fluid and the structure is used. The effective thickness of fluid according to circumferential modes is also discussed. The influence of fluid velocity on the frequency response function is illustrated and discussed. The results by this method are compared with published results and those by commercial tools.

  • Noise and vibrations in the pipe systems may be arisen from pumps. compressors, etc. The source mechanism is classified with the mechanical and hydraulic. Mechanical vibrations may be excited by the unbalance in rotating machinery. Hydraulic source may be generated in the turbulent flow. The vibro-acoustic behaviour of flexible, fluid-filled pipe system is a very complex and determined by two parameters: the frequency and the mass ratio of fluid and pipe wall. As the frequency increases, the mode number in the pipe increases. The mass ratio is close to one, the structure and the fluid are strongly coupled. In ease the diameter is very small to the length of pipe, the behaviour of pipe is same as a beam. The finite element formulation when the fluid and the structure are coupled is derived by using beam element. The Numerical results are compared with the package (Sysnoise) which is using the shell element.

  • The transient dynamic-response analysis of fuel-storage tanks of flying vehicles accelerating in the vertical direction is achieved with finite element method. A fuel-storage tank is a representative example of the fluid-structure interaction problem, in which structure and fluid media interact strongly. For the accurate analysis of this complicated fluid-structure system, we employed ALE(arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian) coupling method. Two types of fuel-storage tanks, one with two baffles and the other without baffle, are considered to examine the effect of baffles. The fuel-storage tank with baffles shows more uniform hydrodynamic pressure distribution, resulting effective stress in structural region and faster convergence from transient to steady states. MSC/Dytran, a commercial FEM software for the 3D coupled dynamic analysis, is used for this analysis.

  • This paper presents a new approach to simulate fluid-solid interaction problems involving non-matching interfaces. The coupling between fluid and solid domains with dissimilar finite element meshes consisting of 4-node quadrilateral elements is achieved by using the interface element method (IEM). Conditions of compatibility between fluid and solid meshes are satisfied exactly by introducing the interface elements defined on interfacing regions. Importantly, a consistent transfer of loads through matching interface element meshes guarantees the present method to be an efficient approach of the solution strategy to fluid-solid interaction problems. An arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) description is adopted for the fluid domain, while for the solid domain an updated Lagrangian formulation is considered to accommodate finite deformations of an elastic structure. The stabilized equal order velocity-pressure elements for incompressible flows are used in the motion of fluids. Fully coupled equations are solved simultaneously in a single computational domain. Numerical results are presented for fluid-solid interaction problems involving nonmatching interfaces to demonstrate the effectiveness of the methodology.
