This study aims to investigate numerically the static and dynamic stiffness characteristics of porous air bearing and to estimate appropriate permeability values of porous medium. In particular, a new roughness model is proposed and implemented into the commercial CFD code (FLUENT Ver.6.2). The predicted results are extensively compared with experimental data for static cases. The roughness model is also validated through comparison with the results from open literature. For the dynamic cases, the deforming and re-meshing technique is used for describing fluid-solid interactions. It is found that the predictions for static stiffness are in good agreement with experimental data and the dynamic stiffness appears to be relatively smaller than the static stiffness. In addition, moving and dynamic analysis of air bearing seems to be possible to provide qualitative predictions even if there are somewhat discrepancies quantitatively, compared to experimental data.
This study developed the cyclone conveying system using roughage cutter for the round bale reported in the previous papers. Performance tests were conducted whether it can easily separate dust from roughage such as rice straws and it can transport roughages from cutter to TMR mixer. In addition, the airflow patterns in the cyclone conveying system were investigated using CFD code (FLUENT 6.2) for various velocities of dust collection fan. The cyclone conveying system was designed based on dried rice straws with a diameter of 1,340 mm, a cylinder length of 1,220 mm, a cone length of 850 mm and the current velocity of the dust collection fan was 15~20 m/s. It was found that transporting of roughage from cutter to TMR mixer and the separation of dust were satisfactory, and the dust removal rate of rice straws was around 31.9%. CFD analysis showed that, at the blowing fan velocity of 11.6 m/s, the airflow velocity inside the dust collector increased as velocity of the dust collection fan increased, but the airflow patterns inside the dust collector were all much the same.
Metal stamping is widely used in the mass-production process of the automobile industry. During the stamping process, air may be trapped between the draw die and the panel. The high pressure of trapped air induces imperfections on the panel surface and creates a situation where an extremely high tonnage of punch is required. To prevent these problems, many air ventilation holes are drilled through the draw die and the punch. The present work has developed a simplified mathematical formulation for computing the pressure of the air pocket based on the ideal gas law and isentropic relation. The pressure of the air pocket was compared to the results by the commercial CFD code, Fluent, and experiments. The present work also used the Bisection method to calculate the optimum cross-sectional area of the air ventilation holes, which did not make the pressure of the air pocket exceed the prescribed maximum value.
Fluid temperature fluctuations in a mixing tee pipe were numerically analyzed by LES model in order to clarify internal turbulent flows and to develope an evaluation method for high-cycle thermal fatigue. Hot and cold water with an temperature difference $40^{\circ}C$ were supplied to the mixing tee. Fluid temperature fluctuations in a mixing tee pipe is analysed by using the computational fluid dynamics code, FLUENT, Temperature fluctuations of the fluid and pipe wall measured as the velocity ratio of the flow in the branch pipe to that in the main pipe was varied from 0.05 to 5.0. The power spectrum method was used to evaluate the heat transfer coefficient. The fluid temperature characteristics were dependent on the velocity ratio, rather than the absolute value of the flow velocity. Large fluid temperature fluctuations were occurred near the mixing tee, and the fluctuation temperature frequency was random. The ratios of the measured heat transfer coefficient to that evaluated by Dittus-Boelter's empirical equation were independent of the velocity ratio, The multiplier ratios were about from 4 to 6.
Liquid droplet impingement erosion (LDIE) known to be generated in aircraft and turbine blades is recently appeared in nuclear piping. UT thickness measurements with both A-scan and B-scan UT inspection equipments were performed for a component estimated as susceptible to LDIE in feedwater heater vent system. The thickness data measured with B-Scan equipment were compared with those of A-Scan. Thermal hydraulic analysis based on ANSYS FLUENT code was performed to analyze the behavior of liquid droplets inside piping. The wall thinning rate and residual lifetime based on both existing Sanchez-Caldera equation and measuring data were also calculated to identify the applicability of the existing equation to the LDIE management of nuclear piping. Because Sanchez-Caldera equation do not consider the feature of magnetite formed inside piping, droplet size, colliding frequency, the development of new evaluation method urgently needs to manage the pipe wall thinning caused by LDIE.
In this study, the flow characteristics of a FPN (Fountain Pen Nano-Lithography) using active membrane pumping are investigated. The FPN has integrated chamber, micro channel, and high capacity reservoir for continuous ink feed. The most important aspect in this probe provided control of fluid injection using active membrane pumping in chamber. The flow rates in channel by capillary force are theoretically analyzed, including the control of the mass flow rates by the deflection of the membrane. The above results are compared with the numerical simulations that calculated by commercial code, FLUENT. The velocity of the fluid in micro channel shows linear behaviors. And the mass flows are proportional to the second order function of the pumping pressure that is imposed to the membrane.

The purpose of this research is to develop high efficiency plastic plate heat exchangers which can be substituted for conventional aluminum plate heat exchangers. Four simulation models of plastic plate heat exchangers are designed and simulated: that is, flat plate type, turbulent promoter type, corrugate type and dimple type heat exchanger. The flat plate type is designed as the reference model in order to evaluate how much thermal performance increases. The turbulent promoter type is fabricated with cylindrical-type vortex generators and rib-type turbulent promoters. The corrugate type is obtained from the conventional stainless steel compact heat exchangers, which are called the herringbone-type compact heat exchangers. The dimple type has a number of dimples on its surface. In this study, the flow and heat transfer characteristics of the plastic plate heat exchanger are investigated using numerical simulation and compared with experimental results. Numerical simulation is carried out using the FLUENT code. The flows are assumed as a three-dimensional, incompressible and turbulent model. The computational analysis and experimental results both show that the friction coefficient and Nu number is highest in the corrugate type. The tendency of numerical simulation results is in good agreement with that of the experimental results.
The present study aims to examine the influence of flame spray distance on the thermal behavior of micro-metal particles and the morphological characteristics of $Ni_{20}Cr$ layers coated on the preheated SCM415 substrates by using the conventional flame spray system. Commercially available nickel-based $Ni_{20}Cr$ particles with a mean diameter of $45{\mu}m$ were used. In addition, CFD simulations using a commercial code (FLUENT ver. 6.3.26) were conducted to estimate temperature and velocity distributions of the continuous and discrete phases before impact on the substrate. From FE-SEM images of coated layers on the substrates, it was observed that as the spray distance decreased, the metal particle morphology showed splash-like patterns and such a short stretch shape, resulting from higher particle momentums and the impact of partially melted particles. Moreover, it was found that the spray distance should be considered as one of important parameters in controlling the porosity and the adhesion strength.
An accurate prediction of the bypass flow is of great importance in the VHTR core design concerning the fuel thermal margin. Nevertheless, there has not been much effort in evaluating the amount and the distribution of the core bypass flow. In order to evaluate the behavior and the distribution of the coolant flow, a unit-cell experiment was carried out. Unit-cell is the regular triangular section which is formed by connecting the centers of three hexagonal blocks. Various conditions such as the inlet mass flow rate, block combinations and the size of bypass gap were examined in the experiment. CFD analysis was carried out to analyze detailed characteristics of the flow distribution. Commercial CFD code FLUENT 6.3 was validated by comparing with the experimental results. In addition, SST model and standard k-$\varepsilon$ model were validated. The results of CFD simulation show good agreements with the experimental results. SST model shows better agreement than standard k-$\varepsilon$ model. Results showed that block combinations and the size of the bypass gap have an influence on the bypass flow ratio but the inlet mass flow rate does not.
This study deals with the numerical investigation on two-dimensional lubrication characteristics of micro-dimple shapes fabricated on solid surfaces by using the commercial CFD code (Fluent V.6.3) to examine the influence of micro dimple depth and width on the reduction in friction under the sliding plate condition. In addition, single and multiple dimple arrays are simulated, all for a fixed area fraction of dimple on the surface. As a result, it is found that the existence of micro-dimpled surface makes it possible to substantially reduce the friction forces exerted on the surfaces, and such an optimum dimple depth would be present because the dimple depth larger than the optimum value did no longer affect the reduction in shear stresses, indicating that the reduction of friction is likely to be associated with inner flows of lubricant inside dimples. Moreover, it is observed that at the fixed area fraction, the friction reduction increases with the increase of dimple diameter.
