  • Numerical analysis of three dimensional incompressible turbulent flows in LNG marine high pressure drop control valves was carried out by using the CFD-ACE from ESI-Group. In this study, flow characteristics of control valves with complex flow fields including cavitation effect were investigated. Simulation was performed on five models of control valve that had different orifice diameters of anti-trim and the size of valve. Comparing newly designed control valves for controling the occurrence of cavitation with the conventional valve, new valves showed a improved flow pattern with almost no cavitation.

  • The past several years have strongly anticipated the advent of a more integrated system control combining active power and voltage-reactive power controls. This paper presents a new approach to the intergrated system control with primary emphasis on the development of a new control method which combines the conventional economical load dispatching(ELD) and voltage-reactive power controls. The control method, in its fundamental principle, first determines the optimal active power allocation in accordance with the conventional ELD controller. By a proper manipulation of the remaining reactive power sources in the system, the control method then reduces the transmission losses of the system by the adjustment of system voltage distribution and also by the proper allotment of reactive power flows.

  • In this paper an asymmetric hydraulic actuator which consists of single acting cylinder and servo valve is modeled for a quarter car active suspension system. This model regards the force as an internal state rather than a control input. The control input of the model is the sum of oil flows that pass through the valve's orifices. The resulting dynamic equation in the state space ap-pears a feedback connection of a nominal linear time in-variant term with a nonlinear bounded uncertain block. Since this model makes it possible to eliminate the force control phase, analysis and controller design are made straightforward and simple. Well known LQR method is then applied. Simulation and test rig experiment show the effectiveness of this approach in modeling and control.

  • When fluid flows at high speed over an open cavity, large acousitc pressure is produced by fluid/structure interaction at the downstream edge of the cavity. The goal of this paper is suggestion of effective control method to suppress the noise generated from cavity and numerically simulation of active control. The cavity instability mechanism is simulated and a close-loop control algorithm is implemented. The effects of the actuator and some control function are discussed. The compressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved with the high-order and high-resolution numerical schemes to precisely simulate the interaction between flow and acoustic. The results show that noise is effectively suppressed with the control method suggested in this paper.

  • In this paper, we present two successful results from active controls of flows over a circular cylinder and a sphere for drag reduction. The Reynolds number range considered for the flow over a circular cylinder is 40-3900 based on the free-stream velocity and cylinder diameter, whereas for the flow over a sphere it is $10^{5}$ based on the free-stream velocity and sphere diameter. The successful active control methods are a distributed (spatially periodic) forcing and a high-frequency (time periodic) forcing. With these control methods, the mean drag and lift fluctuations decrease and vortical structures are significantly modified. For example, the time-periodic forcing at a high frequency (larger than 20 times the vortex shedding frequency) produces $50{\%}$ drag reduction for the flow over a sphere at $Re=10^{5}$. The distributed forcing applied to the flow over a circular cylinder results in a significant drag reduction at all the Reynolds numbers investigated.

  • A large capacity power conversion system constructed by using two or more existing power converters has a lot of flexibility in how the power converters are used. However, at the same time, it has a problem of cross current flows between power converters. The cross current must be suppressed by controlling the system while miniaturizing the combination reactor. This paper focuses on two current control methods of a power conversion system constructed by using two power converters connected in parallel supplying the same power. In order to elucidate the control performance of cross current, each control method which are aimed at controlling cross current and not directly controlling it are examined in simulations.

  • In this parer, we introduce an algorithm to control flows of the traffic in multi-intersections. It is pointed out that the main problem in traffic control is how to resolve the congested situations for the particular time-durations and directions. The heavy load to a certain direction usually leads the intersection to congested situations, and the adjacent intersections are affected. We control and analyze the traffic flow of multi-intersections consisting of five intersections, in which four intersections are linked to the four directions of the central one. The entrance of vehicles of each direction is described using the concept of probability. We compare the performance of the pretimed signal controls to the traffic adaptive signal controller using a Petri Net simulation tool, Exspect.

  • With the increasing number of vehicles in use in our daily life and the rise of traffic congestion problems, many methods and models have been developed for real time optimisation of traffic lights. Nevertheless, most methods which consider real time physical queue sizes of vehicles waiting for green lights overestimate the optimal cycle length for such real traffic control. This paper deals with the development of a generic hybrid model describing both physical traffic flows and control of signalised intersections. The firing times assigned to the transitions of the control part are considered dynamic and are calculated by a simplified optimisation method. This method is based on splitting green times proportionally to the predicted queue sizes through input links for each new cycle time. The proposed model can be easily translated into a control code for implementation in a real time control system.

  • An inventory control system was developed for multiproduct batch plants with an arbitrary number of batch processes and storage units. Customer orders are received by the plant at intervals and in quantities that are subject to random fluctuations. The objective of the plant operation is to minimize the total cost while maintaining inventory levels within the storage or warehouse capacity by adjusting the startup times, the quantities of raw material orders, and production batch sizes. An adaptive model-based control algorithm was developed that uses a periodic square wave model to represent the flows of material between the processes and the storage units. The effectiveness of this approach was demonstrated by performing simulations.

  • The limitation of flow control for a bistable fluidic valve has been investigated. The physical model of the fluidic valve includes two main flow outlets and two control flow inlets. The experiments were conducted with pressure regulators, mass flow meters, and piezo sensors to analyze flow switching characteristics of the fluidic valve. The experimental data such as pressure and mass flow rate of control flows and the switching time of the main flow was obtained with various operating conditions. The operation limit of the fluidic valve is identified, and a model equation for pre-estimating the minimum control pressure to switch the direction of the main flow has been proposed.
