  • A new gerbera cultivar 'Whiteny' was released by the National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science in 2009. A cross was made between 'Wonder King' with white semi-double and 'Ever Green' with pale greenish white and semi-double in 2007. After evaluation of the characteristics for four years (from 2007 to 2010), it was selected specially for the use of cut flower. The 'Whiteny' cultivar has pure white color (RHS W155D) with black disc center and semi-double flower. The average flower diameter is 11.5 cm, large-sized flower. And inner ray floret and disc diameter are 7.8 cm and 2.2 cm, respectively. It has a long peduncle height, 52.2 cm, and longer vase life, 12.1 days. And it is also adaptable to the local cultural environment of Korea. It is expected that if the 'Whiteny' cultivar is planted, the royalty paid to foreign varieties can be saved. And the local growers will also be benefitted since the cost of cultivars will be lower than the imported ones.

  • This experiment was conducted to characterize the inheritance of petal color, flower-eye color, flower shape, leaf variegation pattern, and leaf-end shape in Cyclamen persicum. The segregation of $F_2$ and backcross populations from crosses between inbred lines was tested for Mendelian inheritance mode. From four different combinations of crosses, it was found that the petal color was controlled by a single incomplete dominant gene. The other characters, flower-eye color, flower shape, leaf variegation pattern and leaf-end shape were confirmed to be controlled by single complete dominant genes.

  • Jatropha curcas is an oil bearing species with multiple uses and considerable economic potential as a biofuel plant. Plant flowering and breeding characteristics are important for us to understand the reproduction of plant populations. The present study describes the floral biology and flowering phenology of J. curcas which is a prerequisite for hybridization program for genetic improvement through conventional breeding. The plant produces flowers in dichasial inflorescences. Normally, the flowers are unisexual, and male and female flowers are produced in the same inflorescence. Only a few male flowers are produced in an inflorescence, and fruits are produced only through pollination between different flowers from the same or different plants. This study includes a description of the inflorescence, flower anatomy of both male and female flowers, female : male ratio, pollen : ovule ratio, flowering phenology, pollen viability, stigma receptivity, comparison of selfing methods and a comparison of geitonogamy and xenogamy. This information may be useful in J. curcas breeding programmes.

  • A new spary chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflorum) cultivar 'Yellow Eye' was developed from a cross between 'Angela' and 'Angaesoguk' followed by selections of seedlings and lines at the Flower Research Institute, Gyeongnam Agricultural Research and Extension Services (ARES) from 2003 to 2007. Its characteristics were investigated three times from 2005 to 2007 under forcing culture in spring and retarding culture in autumn. The natural flowering time of 'Yellow Eye' was October 24th, but year-round production was possible by shading and lighting. Its flower was 3.3 cm in diameter, and had 31.7 petals and 27.9 flowers per stem in autumn. It has pollenless, single type flowers with yellow petals and green flower center. To flower in under the short day condition, for 'Yellow Eye' was about 41 days in spring, and 'Yellow Eye' showed a vase life of 23.1 days in autumn. This cultivar was registered for a commercialization in 2007. 'Yellow Eye' would be cultured under the greenhouse and rain shelter condition in Korea.

  • This study was carried out to investigate effects of different night temperature treatments during nursery period on flower bud differentiation and growth of pepper cv. Cheongyang. Number of leaves, top fresh weight and top dry weight of pepper seedlings were increased with increasing the night temperature during nursery periods. And also flower bud differentiation and days to flowering were accelerated as increasing the night temperature. Plant height, stem diameter, branch length and intermode length of pepper after transplanting were height at the low night temperature ($28/11^{\circ}C$), but they were retarded at the high night temperature ($28/21^{\circ}C$) treatment. Number of lateral branches was significantly reduced at the high night temperature, but there was no a regular tendency in branching habit of the main stem by temperature treatments. Seedling growth before transplanting was retarded at the low night temperature but gradually recovered after transplanting into the plastic house. However, seedling growth at the high night temperature was shown in contrast to above response of the low night temperature.

"Golden Amor" was developed from a cross 'Golden Crown' and 'White Wing' followed by seedling and line selections at the National Horticultural Research Institute, Rural Development Administration (RDA) in 2005. Growth and flowering characteristic tests were conducted from 2000 to 2005. "Golden Amor" has large double type flower with bright golden color (RHS 12B). It have multiple florets, good flower shape, upright leaves and stalks. The average yield of "Golden Amor" was 6.0 cuttings per plant in greenhouse carried out from 2003 to 2005. It has good production of cormlets, vigorous growth and resistance to Fusarium and virus. "Golden Amor" would be cultured under greenhouse condition in Korea.

  • A new cultivars Dendranthema grandiflourm 'Dream Moon' was developed at Gyeonggi-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services (GARES), Korea in 2008. The cultivar 'Dream Moon' was derived from a cross between 'Patra', a spray cultivar with yellow single type, and 'Sei-rosa', a spray cultivar with pink single type in 2005. The cultivar has single type flowers with pink petals. Trial evaluation was conducted from 2006 to 2008 for a shading cultivation in summer and a retarding cultivation in spring. The flowering time of 'Dream Moon' is late October, and year-round flowering is possible by shade or light treatment. The diameter of flower is 56.0 mm. Numbers of flowers per stem and petals per flower are 16.4 and 24.6, respectively. After investing of specific characters from 2006 to 2008, it was finally selected and named 'Dream Moon'. It has resistance to white rust and the vase life is about 20.7days in autumn season.

  • A Cymbidium variety 'Snow Bell' (C. kanran ${\times}$ C. Jack Frost) was developed at the National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science, Rural Development Administration in 2011. A cross between C. kanran with small-sized greenish colored flowers and C. Jack Frost with bright pink colored flowers, was conducted in 1999. Based on flower color, leaf shape, flower stalk, and vigor one line was selected. Evaluation and selection trials were conducted from 2006 to 2010. 'Snow Bell' has a light pink sepal (RHS, R56D), red lip (R56A) and a leaf length of 47.5 cm. The average number of flowers on each peduncle is 13.8 and the flower diameter is 6.2 cm. The characteristics of petals and sepals show some incurve and some spreading. 'Snow Bell' has a vigorous growth and a round flower. It has an adequate peduncle height of 50.7 cm compared with leaf length of 47.5 cm, and start blooming in December. In electronic nose analysis, the degree of fragrance between 'Snow Bell' and the C. kanran was similar and both of them showed strong scents, although they had different fragrance patterns.
