  • This study is to evaluate the physical and mechanical characteristics of flowable backfill and search for the optimal mixture contents of it used for constructing underground power utilities. flowable backfill is known as soil-cement slurry, void fill, and controlled low-strength material(CLSM). The benefits of CLSM include reduced equipment costs, faster construction, re-excavation in the future, and the ability to place material in confined spaces such as narrow parts nearly impossible for compaction or perimeter of underground power cables. The flowable slurry mixture made with 9 types of soil and 6 types of accelerated mixtures in the laboratory were evaluated for bleeding, flowability, heat resistance, and unconfined compressive strength to meet the aim values of this study.

  • 20 million tons of coal ash has been produced in Korea annually. This causes the environmental problems and the cost of land for ash pond. However the amount of coal ash for recycling is small because of the low level of recycling technology and the ignorance. As the coal ash has the significant engineering properties, it can be utilized as soft ground stabilizer, backfill materials and so forth. The purpose of this paper is to summarize some of the recycling methods of coal ash. One is structural backfill materials, the other is flowable fill. Optimal mixture ratio(fly ash : bottom ash) is determined for structural backfill materials and the model test is performed. The model test accompanied with physical tests were executed for identifying that the flowable fly ash can be used as fill materials such as trench back filling.

  • This study is to evaluate the mechanical characteristics of flowable backfill and offer a guide line of mixture proportion based on soil types for constructing underground power utilities. Flowable backfill is known as soil-cement slurry, void fill, and controlled low-strength material(CLSM). The benefits of CLSM are reduced equipment costs, faster construction, re-excavation in the future, and the ability to place materials in confined spaces, which are narrow parts or perimeters of underground power cables nearly impossible for compaction. The flowable slurry mixed with 17 soils and 6 accelerated mixtures in the laboratory were evaluated for flowability and unconfined compressive strength to meet the target values of this study.

  • This investigation aims at the optimum mixing of flexible flowable-fill made of Bottom-ash as an industrial waste. Flowable-fill refer to self-compacted, cementitious material used primarily as a backfill in lieu of compacted fill. The two primary advantages of flowable fill over traditional methods are its ease of placement and the elimination of settlement. Therefore, in difficult compaction areas or areas where settlement is a concern, flowable fill should be considered. This study compares Bottom-ash with fine aggregate in physical character. The mixing design indicates a various mixing-rate.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the durability characteristics of controlled low strength material(flowable fill) with high volume fly ash content. Flowable fill refer to self-compacted, cementitious material used primarily as a backfill in lieu of compacted fill. The two primary advantages of flowable fill over traditional methods are its ease of placement and the elimination of settlement. Therefore, in difficult compaction areas or areas where settlement is a concern, flowable fill should be considered. The fly ash used in this study met the requirements of KS L 5405 and ASTM C 618 for Class F material. The mix proportions used for flowable fill are selected to obtain low-strength materials in the 10 to 15kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ range. The optimized flowable fill was consisted of 60kg f/$\textrm{m}^3$ cement content, 280kgf/$\textrm{m}^3$ fly ash content, 1400kgf/$\textrm{m}^3$ sand content, and 320kgf/$\textrm{m}^3$ water content. Subsequently, durability tests including permeability, warm water immersion, repeated wetting & drying, freezing & thawing for high volume fly ash-flowable fill are conducted. The results indicated that flowable fill has acceptable durability characteristics.

  • In the case of the existing method of underground pipe construction, the difficulty of the bedding compaction of pipe causes reducing the compaction efficiency and the stability of the underground facilities and conclusively damaging the structures. One of the methods to solve these problem is using the flowable fills as a backfill material. Therefore, in this study, numerical analysis of the underground pipe was performed in order to evaluate the behavior of pipe according to backfill mixtures. To estimate the deformation characteristic of the underground pipe, the displacement of the main part of the pipe, ground settlement and vertical earth pressures were measured in different backfill mixtures and maintaining the other conditions constantly. As a result of numerical analysis, using the flowable fills as the backfill material is better than using sand in reducing the ground settlement, the pipe deformation and the vertical earth pressure aspect.

  • This study aimed to develop flowable backfill material using oyster shell, coal ash, and surplus soil. The high temperature (> $800^{\circ}C$) reaction was required to convert $CaCO_3$ to CaO. The solid specimens formed by pozzlanic reaction between CaO and coal ash showed low unconfined compressive strength. The effect of kaolin and blast furnace slag was also examined. It was found that CaO and coal ash could not be utilized due to high cost and low performance. The use of oyster shell without calcination ($CaCO_3$) was evaluated. The specimens composing of oyster shell and cement showed the higher unconfined compressive strength than that composing of coal ash and cement. However, use of oyster shell is limited in mortar due to the presence of salt. Addition of soil into oyster shell-coal ash-cement mixture satisfied the specification of flowable backfill material by optimizing their ratio.

  • Inappropriate backfill material and poor compaction cause the damage to sewer and ground settlement. To deal with such problem, flowable backfill material has attracted attention recently. A basic study was conducted in a bid to obtain optimum mixing ratio of backfill material with the characteristics of rapid hardening, pseudo-plasticity, flowability and anti washout ability and enhance the cost efficiency of backfill material. Through the test of optimal mixing ratio of rapid hardening, evaluation of optimal mixing ratio of backfill material was conducted. As a result, required performance as well as cost efficiency could be achieved by adjusting plasticizer even in case of increasing W/M of the paste of rapid hardening to 100%.

  • Backfill material of buried electrical transmission cable should dissipate the heat as rapidly as it is generated, or high temperatures will lead thermal runaway. These problems could raise thermal resistance and recude trasmission efficiency. So Backfill material of buried electrical transmission cable should have not only structual safty but good thermal property. So, in this study, we performed thermal resistancy test for various materials such as sand, weathered soil, clay and mixed soil to analyze the thermal characteristics of CLSM(controlled low strength materials) for water content.

  • Controlled low-strength material(CLSM) which is easily excavated and also known as flowable material, is commonly used as a backfill in utility trenches and other applications. In this study, a rapid-setting flowable material a kind of CLSM made with a field soil were evaluated by an experimental study. The properties ordinarily desired from the mix are: (a) flow under gravity; (b) hardening for early workability(after 4 hours)and cover; and (c) ultimate strength low enough to allow ready excavation. Fluidity of fresh material is evaluated using a simple spread test. Hardening is measured by a mortar penetrometer, and these values are correlated with unconfined compressive strength. It is desirable to keep the ultimate strength to less than $5.6kg/cm^2$ somewhat less target strength is selected for the 28-day value.
