  • Using a strain-controlled rheometer, the steady shear flow properties of aqueous xanthan gum solutions of different concentrations were measured over a wide range of shear rates. In this article, both the shear rate and concentration dependencies of steady shear flow behavior are reported from the experimentally obtained data. The viscous behavior is quantitatively discussed using a well-known power law type flow equation with a special emphasis on its importance in industrial processing and actual usage. In addition, several inelastic-viscoplastic flow models including a yield stress parameter are employed to make a quantitative evaluation of the steady shear flow behavior, and then the applicability of these models is also examined in detail. Finally, the elastic nature is explained with a brief comment on its practical significance. Main results obtained from this study can be summarized as follows: (1) Concentrated xanthan gum solutions exhibit a finite magnitude of yield stress. This may come from the fact that a large number of hydrogen bonds in the helix structure result in a stable configuration that can show a resistance to flow. (2) Concentrated xanthan gum solutions show a marked non-Newtonian shear-thinning behavior which is well described by a power law flow equation and may be interpreted in terms of the conformational status of the polymer molecules under the influence of shear flow. This rheological feature enhances sensory qualities in food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic products and guarantees a high degree of mix ability, pumpability, and pourability during their processing and/or actual use. (3) The Herschel-Bulkley, Mizrahi-Berk, and Heinz-Casson models are all applicable and have equivalent ability to describe the steady shear flow behavior of concentrated xanthan gum solutions, whereas both the Bingham and Casson models do not give a good applicability. (4) Concentrated xanthan gum solutions exhibit a quite important elastic flow behavior which acts as a significant factor for many industrial applications such as food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic manufacturing processes.

  • Flow properties of all suspensions are controlled by their flow units. The factors effecting on the flow units are the characteristics of the particle itself (surface properties, particle sizes, particle shapes and etc.), the electrostatic interactions among the particles and the influences of the medium in the suspensions. Here, we studied the transition between the flow units with shear rate which can be added to the above factors. For the concentrated starch-water suspensions, by using the Couette type rotational viscometer, we confirmed that at low shear rate, dilatancy is appeared, but it is transformed to thixotropy with increasing shear rate. In order to explain this fact, we derived the following flow equation, representing the transition from dilatancy to thixotropy with shear rate, by assuming the equilibrium between the flow units. f = X1β1s./α1 + 1/(1+Kexp(c0s.2/RT))((1-X1)/α2)sinh-1{(β2)0 s. exp(c2s.2/RT)} + K exp(c0s.2/RT)/(1+K exp(c0s.2/RT))((1-X1)/α3)sinh-1{(β3)0 s. exp(-c3s.2/RT)} By applying this flow equation to the experimental flow curves for the concentrated starch-water suspensions, the flow parameters were obtained. And, by substituting the obtained flow parameters to the flow equation, the theoretical flow curves were reproduced. Also, Ostwald curve was represented by applying the flow equation, and the applicability for stress relaxation was discussed.

  • Hot restoration mechanism flow stress and stain of the Al2024 composites reinforced with 1,8,15,36, and $44{\mu}m\;SiC_p$(10 vol. %) were studied by hot torsion tests. The hot restoration mechanism of all the composites was found to be dynamic recrystallization(DRX) at $320^{\circ}C$ while that of the composites reinforced with 1 and $8{\mu}m\;SiC_p$ was found to be dynamic recovery(DRX) at $480^{\circ}C$. It was found that the Al2024 composite with $15{\mu}m\;SiC_p$ showed the highest flow stress(${\sim}$223 MPa) at $320^{\circ}C$ under a strain rate of 1.0/sec. Also the highest flow strain of the composites was obtained at $430^{\circ}C$. The com-posites reinforced with 1 and $8{\mu}m\;SiC_p$ showed lower flow stress and higher flow strain at $480^{\circ}C$ than those of the composites reinforced with 15, 36, and $44\;{\mu}m\;SiC_p$ These result were discussed in relation to the transition of the hot restoration mechanism. $DRX{\leftrightarrow}DRV$. The dependence of flow stress on strain rate and temperature was attempted to fit with the hyperbolic sine equation ($\dot{\varepsilon}=A[sinh({\alpha}{\cdot}{\sigma}_p]^n$ exp(-Q/RT)and Zener-Hollomon parameter($Z=\;\dot{\varepsilon}\;exp(Q/RT))$.

  • This Finite Element Program(TAFEM) has been developed to be able to carry out the structural analsis of tunnel section and simulate the surrounding ground behaviour due to New Austrian Tunnelling Method, of which main support is the surrounding ground, itself. The Elasto-plastic theory has been applied. The used finite elements are 8-noded isoparametric element(rock & shotcrete), 2 or 3-noded rod element(rock bolt) and infinite boundary element. The load incremental method and tangential stiffness method has been used. Associated flow rule was applied to plastic flow and yield criteria inclued not only Mohr-Coulomb but also Drucker-Prager. In this paper, Drucker-Prager yield criterion has been used. The relationship between plastic strain and stress is based on the incremental strain concept and stress-strain equation on the basis of the stress path of each gauss point has been adopted. It may be rational that rock is considered to be no-tension material, so that no-tension analysis has been adopted in accordance with the brittle fracture constitutive equation.

  • Thixotropy is a time-dependent shear-thinning phenomenon. We derived a new thixotropic formula which is based on the generalized viscosity formula of Ree and Eyring, $f={\Sigma}\frac{X_i}{{\alpha}_i}sinh^{-1}$ () (Refer to the text concerning the notation.) The following is postulated: (1) thixotropy occurs when small flow units attached to a large flow unit separate from the latter under stress (2) elastic energy(${\omega}$) is stored on the large flow unit during the flow process, and (3) the stored energy contributes to decrease the activation energy for flow. A new thixotropic formula was derived by using these postulations, $f={\frac}{X_0{\beta}_0}{\alpha_0}{\dot{s}}+{\frac}{X_1{\beta}_1}{{\alpha}_1}{\dot{s}}+{\frac}{X_2}{{\alpha_x}}sinh^{-1}$[$({\beta}_0)_2$ exp $(-C_2{\dot{s}}^2/RT){\cdot}{\dot{s}}$] f is the shear stress, and s is the rate of shear. In case of concentrated solutions where the Newtonian flow units have little contribution to the viscosity of the system, the above equation becomes, $f=\frac{X_2}{\alpha_2}sinh^{-1}$[$({\beta}_0)_2$ exp $(-C_2{\dot{s}}^2/RT){\cdot}{\dot{s}}$]. In order to confirm these formulas, we applied to TiO2(anatase and rutile)-water, printing ink and mayonnaise systems. Good agreements between the experiment and theory were observed.

  • This study is an attempt to understand the birefringence and stress development in an injection molded disk. A computer code was developed to simulate all three stages of the injection molding process - filling, packing and cooling by finite element method. The constitutive equation used here was compressible Leonov model. The PVT relationship was assumed to follow the Tait equation. The flow-induced birefringence was related to the calculated flow stresses through the linear stress-optical law. The predicted birefringence was in good agreement with the experimental results.

  • In the study, the flow stress of material and friction condition were determined by using the cylinder compression test and numerical method. We proposed the flow stress equation including the initial yield strength to predict it from the upper bound method. The upper bound technique uses the velocity field which includes two unknowns to effectively express bulging. Also, inverse engineering technique uses the object function to minimize area enclosed by load-stroke curve. The friction factor is determined from the radius of curvature of the barrel by cylinder compression test. Flow stress and initial yield strength predicted from the above techniques are verified through the finite element simulation.

  • The tube model theory of entangled polymer presumes that the polymer chain holds its equilibrium contour length under certain conditions of flow; at times longer than a certain characteristic time, ${\tau}_k$, in the stress relaxation process following any flow history; in steady flow of rates smaller than ${{\tau}_k}^{-1}$; etc. Rheological phenomena associated with this presumption are discussed.
