In the previous study, the air flow noise around 1.6 k~1.8 kHz was analyzed, and could be reduced by machining a groove in the bore of compressor inlet in front of the main blades of a compressor wheel. It was proven that this groove was very effective for removing the noise without critical sacrifice of compressor performance, and in addition, it did not noticeably deteriorate vehicle performance, drivability and acceleration. It is interesting that the type of groove tried for 1.6~1.8 kHz noise reduction could be effective for another air flow noise, 4 k~6 kHz which is the 3rd order frequency range of turbocharger speed. This study tried various shapes of grooves for minimizing engine performance difference as well as reducing the 3rd order noise. Finally, it was shown that the groove should be round for the engine performance, and an optimal size exist for the noise and the engine performance.
The flow field around a symmetrical airfoil in a uniform flow under the generation of noise was numerically studied and compared with experimental datum. The numerical simulation was carried out by LES which employs a deductive dynamic model as subgrid-scale model. The result of an attack angle of $6^{\circ}$ indicate that the discrete frequency noise is generated when the separated laminar flow reattaches near the trailing edge of the pressure side and the turbulent boundary layer is formed over the suction side of the airfoil near the trailing edge. The periodic behavior of vortex formation was observed around the trailing edge and it persists further downstream in the wake. The frequency of the vortex formation in the wake was consistent with that of the discrete frequency noise.
Suction valve fluttering is generated by reciprocating motions of the piston inhaling and discharging process of gas in the hermetic compressor. A reactive type suction muffler, which produces high pressure-drop because of its complicated flow path, controls the impulsive noise radiated from the flutter of suction valve. The high-pressure drop in the muffler increases the transmission loss, but reduces the EER(Energy Efficiency Ratio) of the compressor. We consider how to design the high acoustic attenuation and low pressure-drop performance to take account of the acoustic and flow performances of the suction muffler. In this study, we identified the suction noise source of compressor from the measurement of the acoustic pulsation and flutter of suction valve. We analyzed the acoustic characteristics of muffler using the finite element method, and compared the experimental and analytical characteristics of flow path of suction muffler. Theoretical predictions and experimental results are compared from the viewpoint of the acoustic performance and energy efficiency of the compressor.
Suction muffler is one of the important component of a compressor for low noise level and high efficiency. The suction muffler which has the complicated flow path gives the higher transmission loss of sound, but lower efficiency of compressor results from the superheating effect and flow loss in suction flow path. It is shown that the computational analysis of fluid dynamics are very popular methods for designing of high performance and low noise suction muffler. To reduce the thermodynamic and flow loss in suction process, the flow path of suction muffler was estimated by FVM(Finite Volume Method) and verified by experiments. And to enlarge the transmission loss of sound, the acoustic properties inside the suction muffler was analyzed by FEM(Finite Element Method) and experiments. The smart muffler which gives a good efficiency and low noise character was developed by using those methods, and the effect was evaluated in compressor by experiment.
In a compressor, highly impulsive pressure fluctuations induced by a reciprocating piston and valves cause noise and vibration to be so critical issues that low noise requirement always challenges engineers developing it. A muffler is frequently used for reducing these impulsive noise components, but has adverse effects on compressor's performance due to additional pressure drop and heat transfer of refrigerant when it pass through the muffler. In this study, compressible full 3-dimensional CFD simulations are performed to investigate both of flow and acoustic performances of a muffler in use for compressors. On a basis of the analysis results, a parametric study using design factors introduced to improve flow and acoustic performances of the existing muffler is carried out. Finally, improved designs are suggested to confirm the current results.
The Hull Mounted Sonar Dome housing the sonar sensor array is a ship's structure protruded from ship bottom, which is under turbulent flow. The flow of sonar surface is highly disturbed and turbulent. In this case the wall pressure fluctuations within the turbulent boundary layer are one of the most important flow induced self noise sources of the SONAR system. We investigate the characteristics of the wall pressure fluctuations of the hull mounted sonar dome through the model test in the cavitation tunnel. This paper contains the wall pressure fluctuation spectra at various free stream velocities.
Using an internal flow noise test bench, this study investigates the variation in internal flow noise at the inlet and outlet monitoring points of a DN100 T-junction pipe under different flow velocities. Results indicate that with increasing flow velocity, both the sound pressure level and total sound pressure level at the inlet and outlet monitoring points increase. The highest total sound pressure level is observed at the vertical outlet monitoring point B, followed by the horizontal inlet monitoring point A, with the lowest at the horizontal outlet monitoring point C. At a constant flow velocity, the sound pressure level at the inlet and outlet points initially increases and then decreases as frequency increases.
Recently, plastic products in air-intake parts of automotive engines have become very popular due to advantages that include reduced weight, constricted cost, and lower intake air temperature. However, flow-induced noise in air-intake parts becomes a more serious problem for plastic intake-manifolds than for conventional aluminum-made manifolds. This is due to the fact that plastic manifolds transmit more noise owing to their lower material density. Internal aerodynamic noise from an Idle Speed control Actuator (ISA) is qualitatively analyzed by using a scaling law, which is expressed with some flow parameters such as pressure drop, maximum flow velocity, and turbulence kinetic energy. First, basic flow characteristics through ISA passage are identified with the flow predictions obtained by applying Computational Fluid Dynamics techniques. Then, the effects on ISA passage noise of each design factors including the duct turning shape and vane geometries are assessed. Based on these results, the preliminary low noise design for the ISA passage are proposed. The current method for the prediction of internal aerodynamic noise consists of the steady CFD and the scaling laws for the noise prediction. This combination is most cost-effective, compared with other methods, and therefore is believed to be suited for the preliminary design tool in the industrial field.
