  • The modes of oscillation and radiated acoustic fields of compressible flows over open cavities are investigated computationally. The compressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved for two-dimensional cavities with laminar boundary layers upstream. The high-order and high-resolution numerical schemes are used for the evaluation of spatial derivatives and the time integration. Physically correct numerical boundary conditions are implemented to produce time-accurate solutions in the whole computation domain. The computational domain is large enough to directly resolve a portion of the radiated acoutic field. The results show a transition from a shear layer mode, for shorter cavities and lower Mach numbers, to a wake mode for longer cavities and higher Mach numbers. The shear layer mode is well characterized by Rossiter modes and these oscillations lead to intense upstream acoustic radiation dominated by a single frequency. The wake mode is characterized instead by a large-scale vortex shedding. Acoustic radiation is more intense, with multiple frequencies present.

  • The drum level control is initiated by 1-element manual control, and then the control mode is changed to 1-element automatic control mode. Finally, the drum level control is changed to 3-element automatic control mode by the logic based on pre-defined threshold of main steam flow. In terms of plant automation, the automatic 1-element control mode is required from the start-up of boiler. In this paper, the fuzzy controller is adopted for automatic 1-element control of drum level from start-up. It is suggested that the fuzzy controller is used in 1-element control, and the fuzzy-PI cascade controller is used in 3-element control. Finally, the validity of suggested control scheme is shown via simulation.

  • In order to elucidate the modes of double-droplet combustion speed in premixed spray flame, the difference between flame propagation speed and droplet cluster disappearance speed are experimentally investigated using a premixed spray burner system, It was confirmed that flame speed concerned with premixed-mode combustion in the spray flame was approximately 2.0 m/s in average while mean disappearance speed of droplet clusters, which were dominated by diffusion-mode combustion in downstream of the flame, was evaluated as much as 0.45 m/s. It was clarified that both characteristics of premixed-mode and diffusion-mode combustion in spray flames are of much difference in nature, even though both speed, which are supposed to depend on local properties of the spray itself and flow conditions surrounding droplet clusters, are scattered in experiments.

  • Spray combustion characteristics of the conducting fuel electrospray has been studied for clean combustion technology. The electrospraying multiplexed system which can maintain the characteristics of the cone-jet mode is able to obtain charged micro droplets with high flow rate. In addition, they have monodisperse distribution during operating the electrospray in the cone-jet mode. The multiplexed grooved nozzle system with the extractor was applied to this experimental device set up. The stable grooved mode can be generated by the grooved nozzle and this electrospray system was applied to the diffusion combustion. It is the first step to discover the diffusion combustion characteristics of the electrospray, In case of the single grooved nozzle electrospray the diffusion flames are occurred at each Jet of grooved mode and they are quite stable. The exhaust gas analysis was indicated that there is the critical point which can make very stable diffusion combustion

  • Electrostatic printing either it is drop-on-demand or continuous has immense applications in non-contact printing systems such as solar cells, flexible printed circuits, RFIDs and bio applications. In this paper a laboratory manufactured nozzle has been designed for the experimental investigation of electrostatic dripping and atomization of liquid. Dripping and atomization conditions such as voltage, nozzle tip diameter, distance between counter electrode and flowrate has been indentified for the designed nozzle. Furthermore it is also demonstrated that the diameter of a generated droplet could be reduced from a significantly large size to a narrow size distribution which can be controlled by volumetric flow rate and applied voltage. This study will help in classify the conditions between different electrostatic dripping mode such as drop-on-demand formation, jet mode and finally the atomization mode based on the laboratory fabricated nozzle head.

  • A series of model tests is performed to evaluate the relationship between soil and a buried pipe in soil undergoing lateral movement. As the result of the model tests, a wedge zone and plastic flow zones could be observed in front of the pipe. And also an arc failure of cylindrical cavity could be observed at both upper and lower zones. Failure shapes in both cohesionless and cohesive soils are nearly same, which was investigated failure angle of $45^{\circ}+{\phi}/2$. In the cohesionless soil, the higher relative density produces the larger arc of cylindrical cavity. On the basis of failure mode observed from model tests, the lateral earth pressure acting on a buried pipe in soil undergoing lateral movement could be applying the cylindrical cavity extension mode. The deformation behavior of soils was typically appeared in three divisions, which are elastic zones, plastic zones and pressure behavior zones.

  • An analytical study on performance evaluation of superdetonative mode ram accelerator was conducted for understanding the experimental result. The quasi-one dimensional continuum, momentum, energy equations were solved under the assumption of inviscid flow. It would be noticeable that experimental result could be analytically simulated with the assumptions of inlet shockwave, temperature dependent specific heat, and additional aluminum combustion due to ablation of aluminum projectile in superdetonative operation mode. The acceleration of ram accelerator was comparable to experimental result with the consideration of the additional aluminum combustion energy by ablation of projectile. As result, the experimental result with the aluminum projectile could be affected by heat of aluminum.

  • The V2F turbulence model, which has shown very good performance in several test cases at low speeds, has been applied to supersonic ramp flow with 20. corner angle at the free stream Mach number of 2.79. The flow is known to manifest strong shock wave/turbulent boundary layer interactions. As a comparative study, low-Reynolds k-ε models are also considered. While the V2F model predicts wall-pressure distribution well, it relatively predicts larger separation bubble and higher skin-friction after the reattachment than the experimental data. Although the ellpticity of f equation is the characteristics of incompressible flows, the converged solutions are acquired in the compressible flow with shock waves. The effect of the realizability constraints used in the model is also examined. In contrast to the result of impinging jet flows, the realizability bounds proposed by Durbin deterioate the overall solutions of the supersonic ramp flow.

  • A hybrid method is presented for efficient computation of turbulent flow noise at low Mach numbers. In this method, the turbulent flow field is computed by incompressible large eddy simulation (LES), while the acoustic field is computed with the linearized perturbed compressible equations (LPCE) derived in this study. Since LPCE is computed on the rather coarse acoustic grid with the flow variables and source term obtained by the incompressible LES, the computational efficiency of calculation is greatly enhanced. Furthermore, LPCE suppress the instability of perturbed vortical mode and therefore secure consistent and stable acoustic solutions. The proposed LES/LPCE hybrid method is applied to three low Mach number turbulent flow noise problems: i) circular cylinder, ii) isolated flat plate, and iii) interaction between cylinder wake and airfoil. The computed results are closely compared with the experimental measurements.

  • Cavitating flow is widely shown in many engineering systems, such as marine propellers, pump impellers, nozzles, injectors, torpedoes, etc. The present work focuses on the numerical analysis of the multiphase flow around the underwater vehicle which was launched from a submarine. The governing equation is the Navier-Stokes equation with a homogeneous mixture mode. The multiphase flow solver uses an implicit preconditioning scheme in curvilinear coordinate. For the code validation, the results from the present work are compared with the existing experimental and numerical results, and a reasonably good agrements are obtained. The multiphase flow around an underwater vehicle is simulated which includes submarine wake effects.
