When a slope failure or a debris flow occurs, a shear strength on failure plane becomes nearly zero and soil begins to flow like a non-cohesive liquid. A consistency of cohesive soils changes as a water content increases. Even a cohesive soil existing at liquid limit state has a small amount of shear strength. In this study, a water content, at which a shear strength of cohesive soils is zero and then cohesive soils will start to flow, was proposed. Three types of clays (kaolinite, bentonite and kaolinite (50%)+bentonite (50%)) were mixed with three different solutions (distilled water, sea water and microbial solution) at liquid limit state and then their water contents were increased step by step. Then, their undrained shear strength was measured using a portable vane shear device called Torvane. The ranges of undrained shear strength at liquid and plastic limits are 3.6-9.2 kPa and 24-45 kPa, respectively. On the other hand, the water content that corresponds to the value of the undrained shear strength changing most rapidly is called flow water content. The flow limit refers to the water content when undrained shear strength of cohesive soils is zero. In order to investigate the relationship between liquid limit and flow limit, the cohesive index was defined as a value of the difference between flow limit and liquid limit. The new plasticity index was defined as the value of difference between flow limit and plastic limit. The new liquidity index was also defined using flow limit. The values of flow limit are 1.5-2 times higher than those of liquid limit. At the same time, the values of new plasticity index are 2-5.5 times higher than those of original plasticity index.

This paper introduces a method of determining the maximum real power transfer limit of interface lines, which connect two areas of a power system, using locally parameterized continuation algorithm. This method traces the path of power flow solutions as interface flow is gradually increased under a certain load demand condition and finds the steady state voltage stability limit, the interface flow limit. Voltage stability index is used to indicate how close the maximum limit is reached. Also, this study presents a procedure to determine the security-constrained interface flow limit using the above method. Contingency ranking index is proposed to identify the severity of contingencies. The case study is performed according to the suggested procedure.

This paper introduces a power flow model of SSSC for voltage stability analysis of power system installed with Static Synchronous Compensators. The SSSC model is obtained from the injection model of voltage source inverter by adding the condition that SSSC injection voltage is in quadrature with current of SSSC-installed branch. This model is incorporated into modified CPF algorithm to study effects of SSSC on the security-constrained interface flow limit. Determination of interface flow limit is simply briefed. In case study a 771-bus real system is used to show that interface flow limit can be improved by appropriate control of SSSC in terms of voltage stability.

This paper addresses improving the voltage stability limit of interface flow between two different regions in an electric power system using the Static Synchronous Series Compensator (SSSC). The paper presents a power flow analysis model of a SSSC, which is obtained from the injection model of a series voltage source inverter by adding the condition that the SSSC injection voltage is in quadrature with the current of the SSSC-installed transmission line. This model is implemented into the modified continuation power flow (MCPF) to investigate the effect of SSSCs on the interface flow. A methodology for determining the interface flow margin is simply briefed. As a case study, a 771-bus actual system is used to verify that SSSCs enhance the voltage stability limit of interface flow.

The annular and coaxial swirl flows between which LPG is supplied was selected to study the swirling flames in double co-swirl flows. The objective of this study is to research into the effects of double co-swirl flow conditions on the stability limit, the reverse flow boundary, and the time mean temperature distributions of the swirling flames. The increase of swirl intensity of axial flow makes the stability limit decrease, but the annular swirl flow (SM>0.5) makes stability and swirl intensity of axial flow increase, And the existence of axial swirl flow makes flame intensive and small in size, and this may be applicable to the design of high power compact combustor.

Recently severe drought caused the water shortage around the western parts of Chungcheongnamdo province, South Korea. A Diversion tunnel from the Geum river to the Boryong dam, which is the water supply dam for these areas has been proposed to solve this problem. This study examined hydraulic impacts on the Geum river associated with the diversion plan assuming the severe drought condition of 2015 would persist for the simulation period of 2016. The hydraulic simulation model was verified using hydrologic and hydraulic data including hourly discharges of the Geum river and its 8 tributaries, fluctuation of tidal level at the mouth of the river, withdrawals and return flows and operation records of the Geum river barrage since Feb. 1, 2015 through May 31, 2015. For the upstream boundary condition of the Geum river predicted inflow series using the nonlinear regression equation for 2015 discharge data was used. In order to estimate the effects of uncertainty in inflow prediction to the results total four inflow series consisting of upper limit flow, expected flow, lower limit flow and instream flow were used to examine hydraulic impacts of the diversion plan. The simulation showed that in cases of upper limit and expected flows there would be no problem in taking water from the Geum river mouth with a minimum water surface level of EL(+) 1.44 m. Meanwhile, the simulation also showed that in cases of lower limit flow and instream flow there would be some problems not only in taking water for water supply from the mouth of the Geum river but also operating the diversion facility itself with minimum water surface levels of EL(+) 0.94, 0.72, 0.43, and 0.14 m for the lower limit flow without/with diversion and the instream flow without/with diversion, respectively.

This paper presents new methods to resolve the important limits in the decoupled UPFC model for power flow, by which conventional power flow program can be performed with addition of two buses per one UPFC. In order to operate UPFC to the desired value, the series voltage and shunt current of UPFC should be computed. So a method of calculating these by simple equations after power flow is derived. However, the calculated magnitude of series voltage and/or shunt current of UPFC may not be allowed because of the UPFC limit \ulcorner to the ratings of inverters. In this case, the active power and the reactive power (or the voltage magnitude) of UPFC buses should be revised to resolve the limit. This paper proposes the Newton Raphson method to resolve these limits. Particularly, when resolving the series voltage magnitude, three strategies are proposed according to the priority of the active power and the reactive power (or the voltage magnitude).

Limit analysis has been rendered versatile in many problems such as structural problems and metal forming problems. In metal forming analysis, a slip-line method and an upper bound method approach to limit solutions is considered as the most challenging areas. In the present work, a general algorithm for limit solutions of plastic flow is developed with the use of finite element limit analysis. The algorithm deals with a generalized Holder inequality, a duality theorem, and a combined smoothing and successive approximation in addition to a general procedure for finite element analysis. The algorithm is robust such that from any initial trial solution, the first iteration falls into a convex set which contains the exact solution(s) of the problem. The idea of the algorithm for limit solution is extended from rigid/perfectly-plastic materials to work-hardening materials by the nature of the limit formulation, which is also robust with numerically stable convergence and highly efficient computing time.

An experimental investigation was conducted in order to determine the flammability limit of the solid fuel ramjet using the backward facing step flow combustion of the plexiglass grain. In order to get the different step height ratio, the grain was drilled straight forward or stepwise. The Phoenics computer code was adopted in order to compare. the flow patterns of the some sample tests using a non-reacting cold turbulent flow model. The stepwise grain give some loading advantage; specially thin and long shape grain design.
