  • Spin-up is a transient flow phenomenon occurring in a container when it starts to rotate from rest or its rotational speed increases from a low to high value. However, most studies on this subject have been for two-dimensional approximation. In this study, spin-up flows in a shallow rectangular container are analysed by using three-dimensional computation. We compared our results with those obtained by others using basically two-dimensional computation. Effect of two parameters, Reynolds number and liquid depth on the flow evolution is studied. We found that 2-D result is not accurate enough, and the vertical velocity distribution should be assumed of a fourth-order polynomial function for a better comparison.

  • The interior vehicle noise due to the exterior aerodynamic field is an important topic in the acoustic design of a car. The air flow detached from the A-pillar and impacting the side windows are of particular interest as they are located close to the driver / passenger and provides a lower insulation index than the trimmed car body parts. This paper presents a numerical analysis method for a simplified vehicle model. The internal air cavity including trim component are included in the simulation. The car body includes the windshield and two side windows. The body is made of aluminum and trimmed with porous layers. The methodology proposed in this paper relies on two steps: the first step involves the computation of the exterior flow and turbulence induced non-linear acoustic field using CFD Code. The second step consists in the computation of the vibro-acoustic transmission through the window using the finite element vibro-acoustic solver Actran.

  • The objective of this study is to develop a NGIS-GUI (National Geographic Information System-Graphic User Interface) system for the computation of peak discharge at drainage basin outlet. The developed system is composed of GIS data extraction module, peak flow computation module and output display module. The selected study area is the Sungjun reservoir area near the Milyang, Kyungnam province and the peak flows depending on various recurrence intervals are computed and graphically displayed. The developed system will be useful for the scientific water flow management in the study area.

  • In this paper, the temperature distribution according to the property change of the insulating oil of the power transformer and max temperature were predicted through the ductility interpretation which heat-flow is coupled. By using CFD (Computation Fluid Dynamics) for the interpretation, the temperature distribution of 154kV the class single phase power transformer was predicted. The power loss causing the temperature rise of the transformer was changed to the heat source and we used as the input value for the heat-flow analysis. The temperature distribution was predicted according to the change of the density, specific heat, thermal conductivity and viscosity, that is the ingredient having an effect on the temperature rise of the transformer oil. The mineral oil of 4 kinds used in domestic and international based on the interpreted result was selected and the temperature distribution according to each load and Hot Spot temperature was predicted.

  • Enormous apartment complexes in urban areas, temporary inversion state and heat island effect occur due to the strong sunshine and weak wind speeds which hinders the dispersion of air pollutants that are emitted from neighboring areas of apartment complexes. In this study, analysis were conducted by using the Fluent code based on the CFD(Computation Fluid Dynamics), including building layout, material, building height from the ground surface, the heat, analysis of flow field in the apartment complex. It was estimated that the temporal radiation inversion phenomenon during the daytime, which was caused by the weak wind speed and higher temperatures in the upper level, contributed to the stagnation of the air pollutants in the lower layer of the apartment complex.

  • The model and analytical method for solving the problem of coupled fluid flow in the reservoir/well system is presented. The 3-D drainage area is composed of three connected media: the tubing, the annuli as a super conducting collector, and the reservoir itself. To couple these three types of fluid flows a non-overlapping Dirichlet-Neumann domain decomposition method is developed. The method allows us to apply an analytical hybrid simulator for accurate evaluation of the impact of main geometrical and hydrodynamic parameters of the 3-D system on the pressure drop along the horizontal well and its production index.

  • In this paper, the performance characteristics of the 2 vane pump for wastewater treatment were investigated using response surface method(RSM) with commercial computation fluid dynamics(CFD) software. Design variables of wastewater treatment pump were defined with the meridional plane of the 2 vane pump impeller. The objective functions were defined as the total head and the efficiency at the design flow rate. The hydraulic performance of optimum model was verified by numerical analysis and the reliability of the model was retained by comparison of numerical analysis and comparative analysis with the reference model.

  • This paper proposes a new Interior Point Method algorithm to improve the computation speed and solution stability, which have been challenging problems for employing the nonlinear Optimal Power Flow. The proposed algorithm is different from the tradition Interior Point Methods in that it adopts the Predictor-Corrector Method. It also accommodates the five minute dispatch, which is highly recommenced in modern electricity market. Finally, the efficiency and applicability of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated with a case study.

  • Three-dimensional and unsteady flow analysis is a practical target of high performance computation. As recently advances of computers, a numerical prediction by the large eddy simulation (LES) are introduced and evaluated for various engineering problems. Its advanced methods for the complex turbulent flows are discussed by several examples applied for aerodynamic designs, analysis of fluid flow mechanisms and their interaction to complex phenomena. These results of time-dependent and three-dimensional phenomena are visualized by interactive graphics and animations.

  • We present an application of the variational multiscale methodology to the computation of concentric annular pipe flow. Isogeometric analysis is utilized for higher order approximation of the solution using Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines (NURBS) functions. The ability of NURBS to exactly represent curved geometries makes NURBS-based isogeometric analysis attractive for the application to the flow through the curved channel.
