  • The current-voltage characteristic have been measured in a gas stabilized DC arc generated in a non-transferred arc plasma torch operating on a mixture of argon and nitrogen. Relation between voltage and current to these arcs has been examined by plasma power and current under different flow rates and gas mixture ratios. Firstly, the voltage and current of arc plasma used argon was measured and secondly, in argon-nitrogen mixed gas regime, the flow rate of nitrogen was increased slowly. When the flow rate of nitrogen was increased, electrode drop of potential was increased.

  • Test results of friction-factor for the flow of air in a narrow channel lined with various honeycomb geometries show that, generally, the friction-factor is nearly constant or slightly decreases as the Reynolds number(or Mach number) increases, a characteristic common to turbulent flow in pipes. However, in some test geometries this trend is remarkably different. The friction factor dramatically drops and then rises as the Mach number increases. This phenomenon can be characterized as a "friction-factor jump." Further investigations of the acoustic spectrum indicate that the "friction-factor jump" phenomenon is accompanied by an onset of a normal mode resonance excited coherent flow fluctuation structure, which occurs at Reynolds number of the order of $10^4$. New empirical friction-factor model for "friction-factor jump" cases is developed as a function of Mach number and local pressure.ach number and local pressure.

  • The fire whirl occurring by the instability of atmosphere is a rare phenomenon, but highly destructive because it has high inhalation and lift force, caused by the rotating velocity. And it is difficult to extinguish the fire, because of increment of the spread rate with the flame height. In this study, for investigation of the flow characteristic of fire whirl for various heat release rate, numerical analysis is performed in same conditions with experiments, using the FDS which is developed at NIST. For validating of the numerical study, the results are compared with the experiment. The result shows that the relation between the characteristic length and the ratio of circulation versus the buoyancy force is $z_f$/D$^{\ast}$ = 0.304(${\Omega}/{\alpha}$)^2 - 1.334${\Omega}/{\alpha}$ + 5.516.

  • This paper reports a numerical flow characteristic analysis in gas boiler combustion chamber. The numerical results with simplification and assumptions were found within 30% of the experiment. A lot of geometrical modification has been invested in attempt to obtain the uniform flow in the combustion chamber exit. As a result, the velocity magnitude of the combustion chamber is relate with the hole size in air distribution plate. The velocity uniformity of the combustion chamber is relate with the number of holes and location in air distribution plate.

  • The source flow ripple and the source impedance in hydraulic pump are characteristic values showing fluid-borne vibration characteristics decisively. We cannot measure these two characteristic values directly, but can measure them by some indirect methods. One representative indirect measuring method is ISO 10767-1. The authors constructed a hardware and a software for the measuring method based on ISO 10767-1. Through the error evaluation of the measured results, accuracy of the measuring method using ISO 10767-1 was examined in detail.

  • This study is investigated into the dynamic effect of the manifold configuration during the gas exchange processes using both simulation and experiment, In theoretical study on the flow analysis, the characteristic method is applied to solve the compressible unsteady flow equation, involving the several steady flow boundary conditions. In order to excute the engine experiment efficiently, a data acquisition system is configured by using A/D converter and PC. Good results which coincided experimental data with simulation output were obtained, and it shows that this simulation method can be applied to obtain the optimal design parameters in the intake and exhaust systems.

  • In this study, methods for the characteristics measurement of pneumatic elements using isothermal chamber, the methods for the flow rate and dynamic characteristic measurement of pneumatic control valve, are proposed. An isothermal chamber is a chamber in which the steel wool is stuffed and isothermal condition can almost be realized. Therefore, the instantaneous flow rate could be measured only from the pressure response using the state equation of gas. Effectiveness and simplicity of the proposed method are confirmed by comparing the measured results obtained by proposed methods with the methods defined JIS and the ISO standards.

  • For a cylinder in a uniform flow stream, sound is generated by the fluctuating pressure on the cylinder surface due to the vortex shedding behind the cylinder. It is known that the major parameters to predict the sound pressure are the characteristic length of the flow along the cylinder axis and the fluctuating lift coefficient. These parameters strongly depend on the Reynolds number and the yaw angle of the cylinder to the free stream. In this experimental study the effects of yaw on the flow parameters, and consequently on the generated sound are investigated. The surface pressure and the radiated sound are measured simultaneously for different yaw angles and showed that the reduced normal velocity component to the cylinder axis reduces the unsteady lift fluctuation which results in lowered sound press-are level, However, experimental result shows that "the cosine law" which uses the normal velocity component as a characteristic velocity for noise Generation from a yawed cylinder needs to be carefully reviewed. reviewed.

  • The characteristic of recent rainfall pattern in Korea is concentrated in summer season and it is very different compare with former characteristic. In 2011, there was heavy rainfall in Chuncheon city of northern part of Korea. Because of rainfall in short time, many landslides were occurred in narrow area and many people were killed by these landslides at that time. The purpose of this study is to calculate run-out distance of debris flow and analyze the movement properties of debris flow according to the elapsed time using numerical analysis method at that time. The debris 2D program, which is developed by prof. Liu in National Taiwan University, was used in this study. Run-out distance of debris flow was calculated under different yield strength conditions which were controlled by rainfall amount. The results reveal that absolute maximum velocity of the debris flow is about 8.1 m/s and maximum depth of debris flow is about 7 m when debris flow was occurred. The run-out distance after 500 sec is about 300 m from end of the valley. It is very well similar with actual debris flow run-out distance. From these results, we can presume the maximum velocity and depth of debris flow at that time.

  • The gas-liquid counter-current flow limitation (CCFL) is closely related to efficient and safety operation of many equipment in industrial cycle. Air-water countercurrent flow experiments were performed in a tube with diameter of 25 mm to understand the triggering mechanism of CCFL. A parallel electrode probe was utilized to measure film thickness whereby the time domain and frequency domain characteristics of liquid film was obtained. The amplitude of the interface wave is small at low liquid flow rate while it becomes large at high liquid flow rate after being disturbed by the airflow. The spectral characteristic curve shows a peak-shaped distribution. The crest exists between 0 and 10 Hz and the amplitude decreases with the frequency increase. The analysis of visual observation and characteristic of film thickness indicate that two flooding mechanisms were identified at low and high liquid flow rate, respectively. At low liquid flow rate, the interfacial waves upward propagation is responsible for the formation of CCFL onset. While flooding at high liquid flow rate takes place as a direct consequence of the liquid bridging in tube due to the turbulent flow pattern. Moreover, it is believed that there is a transition region between the low and high liquid flow rate.
