In this study comparison of experiment results with the computed results of linear theory and nonlinear theory using singularity method was obtainable. Specially singularity points like sources and vortexes on hydrofoil and freestreamline were distributed to analyze two dimensional flow field of supercavitating cascade using nonlinear theory, and governing equations of flow field were derived and hydraulic characteristics of cascade were calculated by numerical analysis of the governing equations. The results compared linear theory and nonlinear theory with the experiment results of the study are as follows: The tolerances of nonlinear theory were larger than those of linear theory in case of ${\alpha}<10^{\circ}$. Moreover the computational range of attack angles could be expanded from ${\alpha}=10^{\circ}$ to ${\alpha}=25^{\circ}$, the flow field of supercavitating cascade could be analyzed in the condition which the wake thickness and the length of cavity are a variable. The shapes of cavity were changed sensitively according to various variable such as attack angles, pitches and wake thickness, and the pressure distribution of hydrofoil surface was identical almost disregarding wake thickness but changed largely according to attack angle and the length of cavity. Lift coefficient and drag coefficient were reduced according to increasing of wake thickness but the influences of wake thickness were very little in the situation of small pitch and long cavity.
The flow simulations around ducted-prop of tilt-duct aircraft were conducted in this study. For the investigation of aerodynamic characteristics of various configurations of duct, the axisymmetric flow calculation method combined with actuator disk model for prop were used. The rapid two-dimensional calculation and fast grid generation enable aerodynamic analysis for various duct configurations in a very short time and anticipated to active role in optimal configuration design of duct exposed to various flight modes. For the case of angle of attack or tilt angle, the three dimensional flow calculation is conducted using the three dimensional grid simply generated by just revolving the axisymmetric grid around center axis. Through the three dimensional calculation around duct, the aerodynamic effectiveness of duct as a lifting surface in airplane mode was investigated. The flow calculations around the control vane (wing) installed in the rear section of duct were conducted The aerodynamic data of wing were compared with the data of the ducts to evaluate the aerodynamic effectiveness of ducts.
Manoeuvrability of ships has been receiving a great deal of attention both concerning navigation safety and the prediction of ship manoeuvring characteristics, especially at the preliminary design stage. Recently, in order to improve manoeuvrability of ships, High-lift devices could be applied to design of rudder at design stage. Now, among the them, we carried out the flow visualization and investigation of flow field around a flapped rudder(trailing-edge flap). A trailing-edge flap is simply a portion of the trailing-edge section of airfoil that is hinged and which can be deflected upward or downward. Flow visualization results of flap defection shown as follow Photos including main body and flap defection.
Ground effect of three-dimensional wing is studied. LU-factored Implicit upwind TVD scheme and Baldwin-Lomax turbulence model are used for this calculation. To investigate ground effect, NACA 4415 wing at M=0.5 calculated. Two different angles of attack and three cases of flight height are calculated. As increasing angle of attack, the ground effect becomes strong. In case of NACA 4415 wing in ground effect, strength of wing tip vortex becomes stronger than that of free flight.
In this study, the hydrodynamic coefficients were measured using various nettings to analyze the change of drag coefficients and lift coefficients as a basic study for deriving hydrodynamic coefficients. The data on hydrodynamic force obtained from the flume tank tests were used to compare and analyze the hydrodynamic coefficients based on Reynolds number. Standardized hydrodynamic coefficients were then assumed during the analysis procedures. The hydrodynamic coefficients were measured using the 9 kinds of nettings in which had the same total projected area with different diameters and mesh-grouping ratio. These different netting systems : mesh-grouping ratio. The results of the test of nettings were as follows; First, the drag coefficients of nettings increased when the higher attack angles applied, and decreased with the increased flow speed and netting twine diameter. Second, the lift coefficients of nettings showed the increased values until the attack angle 30 degree, but decreased for the attack angle over 40 degree. Third, the hydrodynamic coefficients of netting decreased as the Reynolds number increased, and reach at slightly states in the highest numbers. Fourth, the hydrodynamic coefficients were derived from a functional formula considering attack angles and Reynolds number, and presented in the three dimensional space.
An experimental study was carried out to investigate the reduced frequency effect on the near-wake of an elliptic airfoil oscillating in pitch. The airfoil was sinusoidally pitched around the center of the chord between -5$^{\circ}$and +25$^{\circ}$angles of attack at an airspeed of 3.4 m/s. The chord Reynolds number and reduced frequencies were 3.3 ${\times}$10$^4$, and 0.1, 0.7, respectively Phase-averaged axial velocity and turbulent intensity profiles are presented to show the reduced frequency effects on the near-wake behind the airfoil oscillating In pitch. Axial velocity defects in the near-wake region have a tendency to increase in response to a reduced frequency during pitch up motion, whereas it tends to decrease during pitch down motion at a positive angle of attack. Turbulent intensity at positive angles of attack during the pitch up motion decreased in response to a reduced frequency, whereas turbulent intensity during the pitch down motion varies considerably with downstream stations. Although the true instantaneous angle of attack compensated for a phase-lag is large, the wake thickness of an oscillating airfoil is not always large because of laminar or turbulent separation.
Numerical solutions of Stokes flow through periodic arrays of cylinders were sought using Darcy's law and homogenization theory. Drag and lift forces of each cylinder were computed for various attack angles and pitch-to-diameter ratios. It was found that drag force decreased as principal pressure gradient direction deviated from array direction and that drag force increased exponentially as pitch-to-diameter ratio approached unity. Similar tendency was found in lift force except that lift force increased and then decreased in quadratic manner as attack angle varied.
An experimental study was carried out to investigate the flow characteristics of a stationary blade for six kinds of measuring angles of attack, $0^{\circ},\;10^{\circ},\;20^{\circ}\;and\;30^{\circ}$ at Reynolds number of $5.8{\times}10^4$. Instant simultaneous velocity vectors around blade were measured by 2-D PIV system where laser-based illumination and two-frame grey-level cross correlation algorithm were adopted. Velocity profiles show uniform approaching flow from the straightening equipment, and experimental results reveal that separation phenomena occur and the separation point moves upstream with increasing angle of attack.
Exter ballistics of a typical high-speed projectile is studied through a flow-visualization experiment and an unstructured grid Navier-Srokes computation. Experiment produced a schlieren photograph that adequately shows the characteristic features of this complex flow, namely two kinds of oblique cone shocks and turbulent wake developing into the downstream. A hybrid scheme of finite volume-element method is used to simulate the compressible Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stok- es solution on unstructured grids. Osher's approximate Riemann solver is used to discretize the cinvection term. Higher-order spatial accuracy is obtained by MUSCL extension and van Albada ty- pe flux limiter is used to stabilize the numerical oscillation near the solution discontinuity. Accurate Gakerkin method is used to discretize the viscous term. Explict fourth-order Runge-Kutta method is used for the time-stepping, which simplifies the application of MUSCL extension. A two-layer k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model is used to simulate the turbulent wakes accurately. Axisymmetric folw and two-dimensional flow with an angle of attack have been computed. Grid-dependency is also checked by carrying out the computation with doubled meshes. 2-D calculation shows that effect of angle of attack on the flow field is negligible. Axi-symmetric results of the computation agrees well with the flow visualization. Primary oblique shock is represented within 2-3 meshes in numerical results, and the varicose mode of the vortex shedding is clearly captured in the turbulent wake region.
International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulates an emission of greenhouse gases by creating an Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) to reduce environmental pollution. In propulsion system field, studies are under way on Energy Saving Device (ESD), which can improve propulsion efficiency with the propeller, to reduce the EEDI. Among the studies, the study of Pre-Swirl Stator (PSS) has been actively conducted from long time ago. Recently the variable pith angle type pre-swirl stator has been studied to improve the propulsion efficiency in non-uniform flow fields of the Stern. However, for traditional design methods, no specific design method has been established on the blade or location of radius. In this study, proper design method is proposed for each blade or location for radius according to hydrodynamic pitch angle.
