In the design of scramjet intake for hypersonic flight, a variety of aerothermodynamics phenomena are encountered. These phenomena include blunt leading - edge effects, boundary layer development issues, transition, inviscid / viscous coupling, shock - shock interactions, shock / boundary - layer interactions, and flow profile effects. For intakes that are designed to operate within a narrow Mach number / altitude envelope, an understanding of a few of these phenomena might be required. In this work several predominant flowfield phenomena (viscous phenomena, boundary - layer separation, and combustor entrance profile) are discussed to investigate the performance of the intake at the altitude and angle of attack extremes of the HyShot flight experiment.

The present study investigates heat/mass transfer and flow characteristics in a ribbed rotating passage with turning region. The duct has an aspect ratio (W/H) of 0.5 and a hydraulic diameter ($D_h$) of 26.67 mm. Rib turbulators are attached in the parallel arrangement on the leading and trailing surfaces of the passage. The ribs have a rectangular cross section of 2 m (e) $\times$ 3 m (w) and an attack angle of $70^{\circ}$. The pitch-to-rib height ratio (p/e) is 7.5, and the rib height-to-hydraulic diameter ratio (e/$D_h$) is 0.075. The rotation number ranges from 0.0 to 0.20 while the Reynolds number is constant at 10,000. To verify the heat/mass transfer augmentation, internal flow structures are calculated for the same conditions using a commercial code FLUENT 6.1. The results show that a pair of vortex cells are generated due to the symmetric geometry of the rib arrangement, and heat/mass transfer is augmented up to $Sh/Sh_0=2.9$ averagely, which is higher than that of the cross-ribbed case presented in the previous study for the stationary case. With the passage rotation, the main flow in the first-pass deflects toward the trailing surface and the heat transfer is enhanced on the trailing surface. In the second-pass, the flow enlarges the vortex cell close to the leading surface, and the small vortex cell on the trailing surface side contracts to disappear as the passage rotates faster. At the highest rotation number ($R_O=0.20$), the turn-induced single vortex cell becomes identical regardless of the rib configuration so that similar local heat/mass transfer distributions are observed in the fuming region for the cross- and parallel-ribbed case.

In the present study, unsteady flow analysis has been conducted to investigate the blade forces and wake flow around a hybrid street-lamp having a vertical-axis small wind turbine and a photovoltaic panel. Uniform velocities of 3, 5 and 7 m/s are applied as inlet boundary condition. Relatively large vortex shedding is formed at the wake region of the photovoltaic panel, which affects the increase of blade torque and wake flow downstream of the wind turbine. It is found that blade force has a good relation to the variation of the angle of attack with the rotation of turbine blades. Variations in the torque on the turbine blade over time create a cyclic fluctuation, which can be a source of turbine vibration and noise. Unsteady fluctuation of blade forces is also analyzed to understand the nature of the vibration of a small wind turbine over time. The detailed flow field inside the turbine blades is analyzed and discussed.

The Characteristics of the flowfield around three circular cylinders in tandem arrangement was investigated by PIV. Strouhal numbers, vorticity, velocity vectors and velocity profiles were observed at centre-to-centre space ratios of P/D=1.25~3.75, and Reynolds number of Re=$3.0{\times}10^3{\sim}5.0{\times}10^3$. As the results the Strouhal numbers measured in the rear region of 3rd the cylinder were distinguished three kind of regions with the space ratios and The flow pattern in the wake of each cylinder was different according to these regions. The time averaged flow at region of each cylinder was almost stagnated and the size of the stagnated region was small in order of 1st, 2nd and 3rd cylinder. The direction of vortex at the front and rear region of 2nd cylinder was opposed each other with the small difference(${\alpha}= {\pm}5^{\circ}$) of the attack angle ${\alpha}$.

RANS computational analysis was performed on the head of the launch vehicle including the hammerhead nose pairing in the supersonic regime. The two-dimensional axisymmetric analysis was performed by using laminar, fully turbulent and transition models and compared with the experimental data. It was observed that different flow phenomena occurred depending on the Reynolds number. Under the high Reynolds number condition, the boundary layer becomes turbulent, which is not separated from the surface of the launch vehicle. With the low Reynolds number condition, laminar separation bubble was produced due to the separation and reattachment of the boundary layer on the expansion-compression edge of the hammerhead type nose fairing. The three-dimensional computations with the angle of attack showed a fully detached vortical structure due to the laminar separation bubble. It is proved that the turbulent transition should be considered to predict the separation bubble with the Reynolds number.

The present study introduces an artificial neural network (ANN) that can predict the missile aerodynamic coefficients for various missile nose shapes and flow conditions such as Mach number and angle of attack. A semi-empirical missile aerodynamics code is utilized to generate a dataset comprised of the geometric description of the nose section of the missiles, flow conditions, and aerodynamic coefficients. Data normalization is performed during the data preprocessing step to improve the performance of the ANN. Dropout is used during the training phase to prevent overfitting. For the missile nose shape and flow conditions not included in the training dataset, the aerodynamic coefficients are predicted through ANN to verify the performance of the ANN. The result shows that not only the ANN predictions are very similar to the aerodynamic coefficients produced by the semi-empirical missile aerodynamics code, but also ANN can predict missile aerodynamic coefficients for the untrained nose section of the missile and flow conditions.
The purpose of this study was to develop of the smoke flow visualization device of learning wind tunnel, teaching-learning materials in order to demonstrate air-flow around the fluid-flow field qualitatively and understand the resistance concepts of fluid-flow in secondary school. The contents of this study were consisted of the development and experiment of smoke flow visualization for learning wind tunnel. The main results of this study were as follows: First, this developed teaching-learning material here will help students understand the fundamental physical phenomena related with the resistance of fluid and the various patterns of air-flow in the field of transportation technology. Second, flow visualization has shown the same tendency in both of theoretical and experimental patterns. Third, the airfoil model has the smallest wake region meaning resistance against air-flow of circular cylinder and square rod model. Forth, flow separation point at leading edge and wide wake region began to show under the angle of attack of airfoil model ${\alpha}$ is $20^{\circ}$. Fifth, the wake width of the flow field behind a golf ball with dimple became slightly narrower than that without dimple. Sixth, the developed device was made to apply the teaching and learning materials for the experiment and practice in order to increase students' interest and attitude.

A novel 3D mathematical model for water film runback and icing on a rotating surface is established in this work, where both inertial forces caused by the rotation and shear forces due to the air flow are taken into account. The mathematical model of the water film runback and energy conservation of phase transition process is established, with a cyclical average method applied to simulate the unsteady parameters variation at angles of attack. Ice accretion on a conical spinner surface is simulated and the results are compared with the experimental data to validate the presented model. Then Ice accretion on a cowling surface is numerically investigated. Results show that a higher temperature would correspond to a larger runback ice area and thinner ice layer for glaze ice. Rotation would enhance the icing process, while it would not significantly affect the droplet collection efficiency for an axi-symmetric surface. In the case at angle of attack, the effect of rotation on ice shape is appreciable, ice would present a symmetric shape, while in a stationary case the shape is asymmetric.

In this paper, film cooling characteristics at supersonic free stream conditions were examined experimentally by applying an IR-thermography. Film cooling experiments were carried out in a free-jet facility at Mach number of 3.0 and with unit Reynolds number of $42.53{\times}10^6$ and $69.35{\times}10^6$ using wedge shaped film cooling model which has a converging film cooling nozzle. Film cooling efficiency was calculated by measuring the surface temperature of PEEK(Polyether Ether Ketone) and the effects of angle of attack and blowing ratios on the film cooling efficiency were examined. The measured wall temperature was significantly reduced by the film cooling flow compared with the results without the film cooling flow. The usefulness of film cooling was also confirmed by the surface heat flux calculated using the surface temperature history of PEEK. As the blowing ratio increases the protected area of PEEK was also expanded along the direction of free stream and film cooling flow.

The effects of the interaction between flow field and heat transfer caused by the longitudinal vortices are experimentally investigated using a five hole probe and a transient liquid crystal technique. The test facility consists of a wind tunnel with vortex generators protruding from a bottom surface and a mesh heater. In order to control the strength of the longitudinal vortices, the angle of attack of vortex generators used in the present experiment is 20$^{\circ}$, and the spacing between the vortex generators is 25mm. The height and cord length of the vortex generator is 20mm and 50mm, respectively. Three-component mean velocity measurements are made using a f-hole probe system, and the surface temperature distribution is measured by the hue capturing method using a transient liquid crystal technique. The transient liquid crystal technique in measuring heat transfer has become one of the most effective ways in determining the full surface distributions of heat transfer coefficients. The key point of this technique is to convert the inlet flow temperature into an exponential temperature profile using the mesh heater set up in the wind tunnel. The conclusions obtained in the present experiment are as follows: The two maximum heat transfer values exist over the whole domain, and as the longitudinal vortices move to the farther downstream region, these peak values show the decreasing trends. These trends are also observed in the experimental results of other researchers to have used the uniform heat flux method.
