Both a Finite Volume and a Discrete Vortex technique to solve the unsteady Navier-Stokes equations have been employed to study the air flow around long-span bridge decks. The implementation and calibration of both methods is described alongside a quasi-3D extension added to the DVM solver. Applications to the wind engineering of bridge decks include flow simulations at different angles of attack, calculation of aerodynamic derivatives and fluid-structure interaction analyses. These are being presented and their specific features described. If a numerical method shall be employed in a practical design environment, it is judged not only by its accuracy but also by factors like versatility, computational cost and ease of use. Conclusions are drawn from the analyses to address the question of whether computer simulations can be practical design tools for the wind engineering of bridge decks.

Semi-solid forging can be applied in industry only with enough knowledge of the effects of the forming parameters related with the process and their exact control which can be obtained by empirical or numerical methods. In the current study, the effects of process variables on semi-solid forging are discussed based on mainly numerical results. Die preheating temperature, initial solid fraction of the workpiece, and die velocity were selected as process variables, and numerical analyses using a rigid-thermoviscoplastic finite element approach that considered the release of latent heat due to phase change were carried out. In the analyses, a proposed flow stress material characterization and a solid fraction updating algorithm were employed. The obtained results from numerical analysis are discussed and are compared with some experimental observations.
This paper investigates the mechanical behavior of full-scale offshore fish cages under hydrodynamic loads. To simulate different cases, different materials were used in the fish cage and analyzed under different flow velocities. The cage system is studied in two parts: net cage and floating collar. Analyses were performed with the ANSYS Workbench program, which allows the Finite Element Method (FEM) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method to be used together. Firstly, the fish cage was designed, and adjusted for FSI: Fluid (Fluent) analysis. Secondly, mesh structures were created, and hydrodynamic loads acting on the cage elements were calculated. Finally, the hydrodynamic loads were transferred to the mechanical model and applied as a pressure on the geometry. In this study, the equivalent (von Mises) stress, equivalent strain, and total deformation values of cage elements under hydrodynamic loads were investigated. The data obtained from the analyses were presented as figures and tables. As a result, it has been shown that it is appropriate to use all the materials examined for the net cage and the floating collar.

A simultaneous measurement system that can analyze the flow-structure interactions(FSI) has been constructed and analyses on the flow field and the motion field of a floating cylinder was made. The three-dimensional vector fields around the cylinder are measured by 3D-PTV technique while the motion of the cylinder forced by the flow field is measured simultaneously with a newly developed motion tracking algorithm(bidirectional tracking algorithm). The cylinder is pendant in the working fluid of a water channel and the surface of the working fluid is forced sinusoidal to make the cylinder bounced. The interaction between the flow fields and the cylinder motion is examined quantitatively.

For the more comfortable thermal environment in residential buildings, it was necessary for variable components like as automatic flow limiting valves and/or balancing valves in hydronic system. And, these components had an effect on flow-rate and pressure inside pipe. In this case, the incompatibility between the design for the heating system and the selection of equipment was the causes of several problems in heating pipe network. In this study, we peformed measurements and analyses of flow rate and pressure inside pipe for radiant floor heating in residential buildings through field surveys and experiments in order to find out the actual conditions and problems. On the basis of this, we suggested the approach for the optimal flow-rate and pressure maintaining inside pipe in individual heating system.
A CFD-based design method for transonic axial compressor blades was developed based on three-dimensional Navier-Stokes flow physics. The method employs a sectional three-dimensional (S3D) analysis concept where the three-dimensional flow analysis is performed on the grid plane of a span station with spanwise flux components held fixed. The S3D analysis produced flow solutions nearly identical to those of three-dimensional analysis, regardless of the initialization of the flow field. The sectional design based on the S3D analysis can include three-dimensional effects of compressor flows and thus overcome the deficiencies associated with the use of quasi-three-dimensional flow physics in conventional sectional design. The S3D design was first used in the inverse triode to find the geometry that produces a specified target pressure distribution. The method was also applied to optimize the adiabatic efficiency of the blade sections of Rotor 37. A new blade was constructed with the optimized sectional geometries at several span stations and its aerodynamic performance was evaluated with three-dimensional analyses.

Recently, the turbo charger has become an important part because it yields little displacement and high power while downsizing the engine's fuel ratio for environmental purposes. In this study, flow analysis was conducted to form the basis of data regarding the best efficiency. The axial displacement was changed from none to 25 mm by controlling the configuration of the turbo charger and the flow analyses were compared with each other. The maximum rate of the outlet of model 1 was 46.36 m/s and the maximum pressure of model 4 was 0.761946 Pa. The maximum flow rate of model 4 was 0.000187650 kg/s. This study's result should aid in the effective design of a turbo charger with high performance.

This study analyzed the reductive effect of lateral flow by the section and height of reinforcement of EPS. The conclusions of the study are as follows. (1) The lateral flow increased as the section of reinforcement decreased. The reinforcement section that satisfied the allowable range of the lateral flow turned out to beapproximately 80% of the standard reinforcement section. (2) As reinforcement height was decreasing, the lateral flow increased. The reinforcement heigh that satisfied the allowable range of the lateral flow turned out to be approximately 50% of the total lateral height of abutment.
In many semi-empirical analyses of flow boiling heat transfer, an annular flow is often assumed as a model flow and the local liquid film thickness is a key parameter in the analysis. This work considers a simple electrical conductance technique to estimate the local liquid film thickness in two-phase annular flows. In this approach, many electrodes are mounted flush with the inner wall of the pipe. Voltage differences between two neighboring electrodes for concentric annular flows with various liquid film thicknesses are obtained before the main experiments and logged in a look-up table. For an actual application in the annual flow, voltage differences of neighboring electrodes are measured and then corresponding local film thicknesses are determined by the interpolation of the look-up table. Even though the proposed technique is quite simple and straightforward, the numerical and static phantom experiments support its usefulness.
Air Conditioner has become a popular comfort providing device since two decades, whether in an office or home especially for warm and wet climate countries. The RAC (Room Air Conditioner) is widely used in various working spaces and residences. It composed of heat exchager, cross-flow fan, stabilizer, rearguider and blade of diffuser region, etc. In this study, numerical analyses based on the prediction of transient phenomena were carried out to investigate the flow characteristics in the RAC, including the impeller, the rearguider, the stabilizer and the blade of the diffuser region. Using a commercial code, FLUENT, the velocity, pressure and streamlines were obtained with unsteady, turbulent flow and no-slip condition. The angular velocities of impeller are located in the 900 rpm. Turbulent closure was achieved using a standard k-${\varepsilon}$ model. A moving reference frame (MRF) approach was adopted to simulate the flow field generated by impeller in the RAC. Results were graphically depicted with various geometrical configurations and operating conditions.
